Are the Guardians total a-holes? As in: are we the bad guys?

Titans, were the greek pantheon's total d*cks, fighting and losing the war against the awesome and just gods, the Olympians. Warlocks, in the legends of old and in modern fantasy, are those who corruptively use magic destructively instead of creatively. Hunters, away from the usually heroic Rangers, are predatorial. As in Hunter is the literal equivalent of predator, someone who kills or traps prey. All of the guardian classes have names that in history and fiction is usually reserved for the antagonists, not the protagonists. The name and description of "bad guys". Additionally, our ONLY meaningful interaction with other intelligent species in our solar system is to kill them. An undead army of killers. Sure, the alien races have attacked us, but did they really? The Hive seems wretched and zombie-like to us, but their most capable fighters are classified as their Acolytes and Knights that fight their battles. Their leaders are Exalted, with titles like Wizards and Princes. Does the Hive see themselves as noble? Are they seeing themselves how we view the legends of Arthur and Merlin, chasing down The Traveller, an ancient foe, to bring peace to the galaxy once again? How about The Fallen? Did they lose their Empire to the ravages of The Traveller, their own personal Hitler? Does The House of Kings and The House of Winter lead the final hunt, with their Captains, their Servitors, their Lords and their Primes in a valiant chase that they hope will echo in their legends for eons when the traveller and it's undead army is finally defeated? How about the Vex? They can't be good, can they? An organic race of religious robots, going to Venus to protect something they consider at least a Guru, and at most a God. Wouldn't humanity be as forceful to claim a holy relic? Wouldn't humanity be angered when the relic was destroyed, during prayer? I bet parts of humanity, the humanity we know, would to exactly the same. At this point it should be unecessary to point out the valiant vanguard, the Space Marines of the known alien universe, The Cabal. Bravely fighting hostile aliens, chasing down the evil that is The Traveller, with their mighty, well trained, brave army. Their legionarys, centurions, phalanxes, psions and colossi. Under the banner of any Primus, they seem hell-bent on putting and end to the evil magic of the Traveller, it's evil undead army (us) and anyone else who comes in the way. Each faction in Destiny could have a game or a series of books of their own, their own noble purposes, and we do not have a clue. Warlocks, Hunters and Titans, the unholy, undead army, infused with the mysterious powers of the lifeless Traveller. Are we the badguys? Are we the D*cks of the universe? What do you think? Please come with suggestions either way. Personally, I think this way of looking at it is pretty cool.

  • I don't know. I want the traveller to be good, but the more theories come up the more he seems evil. On the otherhand, that Speaker gon get himself shot. He's an evil bastard, I feel it.

    • There's a reason I wear the Cloak of the Trinary Cult, and it sure as hell isn't because I trust some ball in the sky. We could very well have been deceived. Brought back to kill in the name of just cause without knowing that is wasn't the right thing to do. Doesn't it seem a bit strange that we were instantaneously okay with having been raised from the dead without our knowledge? And did we argue when the ghost told us who to kill? Who knows.

      • To our enemies, we're an army of the dead raised by a dying god. We are the Zombie Apocalypse. Good and evil is based solely on perspective, so we're still the protagonists for our own purposes. Defending and attempting to reclaim what we once had, much like the enemy factions are.

        • It depends from what standpoint. Sure, not Earth is under attack we just defend it. But what about the Vex? They're defending the Garden, we just invade there. The Cabal have a good reason to be mad at us as well. The Traveller was their companion first. It might look like we stole it. Plus they're a military race, so talking wont be good with them... The Fallen however are scavengers. They're neutral above everything. They just do as they think is best for their own. And seeing how Humanity is on the verge of extinction it makes sense to finish them off and take the loot. Humanity however is simply just trying to protect the Traveller for some odd reason and trying to rebuild the Golden Age. But since it's unclear how it collapsed, we can't point fingers at some race. That's racist.

I picture the Cabal just being a military force that believes in the glory of conquest. Or something of that sort. They might have conventional interests like the technology of the Fallen, Vex, or ourselves. The Vex clearly had some purpose they were designed for, then might've gained some form of sentience in the form of colonial mind. They may even have been designed to go back in time to prevent something, and just ended up all over time as a result. Forever trying to fulfill their original purpose. I figure the Fallen either hate the traveler. Or want it's technological secrets. Maybe that's why they have floating energy orb baddies. Perhaps they have a vague grasp on how the travelers power works, and try to emulate it. I think the Hive just worship the "Darkness" sort of like a cult. I'm sure there's a lot more to it.

            • Titan could just refer to someone who is indomitable on the battlefield, and warlock is just a male witch (but it actually comes from the word warloga, meaning "oath breaker"). The Hive..well..just listen to the sounds they make ok it's the flood 2.0, which means KILL IT WITH FIRE. The Fallen tear the second set of arms off of the Dregs which is unusually cruel, and pretty douchey. And The Vex travel from world to world to try and take it over and turn said planet into one of their machines, which probably wouldn't be good for our atmosphere, so they need to die before they come for us. TL;DR Kill em all

                • If they didn't describe the Guardians as being "born of light" you might have a point... The difference between us Guardians and Joe schmoe (other than the fact we are zombies) is that we wield the light (our supers) to battle the darkness and it's minions (hive, vex). Just using that information alone I think it's pretty safe to say we are the good guys. Light vs dark equates to good vs evil 99.9 percent of the time.

                  • I voted "What"? Not because I didn't understand your question, but because that was my main question throughout the entire darn story. ...Wait.... what? That word... what.... probably summarizes the entire story behind this game in a single utterance. Are we, the guardians, the bad guys? We have no idea because we have no darn clue just what the hell the pathetic story is about lol. Oh but wait for the Queen's Wrath Event which will explain more about the Queen by...... forcing you to play missions you've already played half a dozen times!?!? Right...

                  • I never play as the bad guy/renegade/dark side type so it seems to me that it would be quite ironic if Destiny forces me into the role of the evil character, despite being completely unbeknownst to me. That was a horrible sentence.

Imparting words of wisdom: In war is no "good" or "evil", just this side, and that one. Who is "good" and "evil" is determined by who wins. Wouldn't you want to defeat the forces who oppose the "benevolent" traveller who gave you knowledge? On the same note, we can judge the Guardians as good, as Hunters provided food to grow civilization, Titans were the creators of all (even if they had evil intents), and Warlocks, even if a little twisted, provided knowledge for future peoples in Sciences like Chemistry. Similarly, Nobles (Hive) of the Medieval times abused and suppressed the lower classes citizens, armies (Cabal) are made for the sole purpose of killing, and the names of the Vex bring thought to supremacists and anarchists. I loved your outlook on the matter, though. You may like the lore in games such as Dark Souls. (EDIT: It's also possible, thanks to the beginning scene of the Meteorologists landing on Mars, that Humans created the entirety of their Golden Age by themselves without the Traveler. Which would lead us to the conclusion that the Traveler itself came to play with us: bringing our Golden Age crashing down, waiting for centuries, then feeding our ancestors with lies of it's gifts. The whole city may be a game the Traveler orchestrated by bringing armies of those he conquered or deceived to play with another race before ultimately enslaving or annihilating them. Or replacing one of his current slave races (which would explain why they so wholeheartedly attempt to kill us). The Hive, who are so startlingly humanoid in both shape, power, and intelligence, that they may just be the Moon's colonists that over the years evolved like the Awokened, which would explain their hatred towards the Traveler, due to records kept. Food for thought, although I like all possibilities, I'm partial to the Traveler being good, chased by the Darkness, and that the Speaker is manipulating us through the "Traveler's" voice.
"Breaking into the Exclusion Zone brings us one step closer to the Garden - and it gives us access to Freehold, a triumph of Golden Age civilization. But I must warn you of the Awoken's tactics. They see us all as playthings in some cosmic joke." - The Speaker
• we are definitely on the bad side in this game! the humans spread out into the galaxy and exploited all the planets and now they have to pay the price for their greed. And its obvious that the Vex are sent from the future to stop the Humans once and for all just like the terminator that was sent from the future to protect john conner :D I just dont get why all these "enemys" are fighting each other maby they were fooled by the humans to believe that because that way its easier for them to gain power??

The fact that you just brought up all these questions and we have no real answers just shows how little bungie gave us in information when they could've given us so much more.. You should've been working for bungie and help bring up these questions maybe some would've been answered in the game ha

                      • It is confusing, isn't it. I never understood the resurrection thing, we are corpses, a zombie human or awoken, are we decomposing? Surely that's a tad dark. but they talk about Light a lot, that must be the opposite of evil. Yet here we are, mercenaries for the queen's amusement, who is OBVIOUSLY not all that good, nor is her brother. Not an ounce of acknowledgment toward me being also the awoken race. She wants someone dead and we do it for material gain, a nice new helmet. We get our bounties from a droid who obviously doesn't care one way or the other about anything. We eagerly punch 30 living things in the face, a knifeblade to the eyesocket, savage headshots, all for material gain and power. We line up for the crucible, to kill each other, a grenade to the nuts, a shotgun blast to the spine at point blank.

Your analogies are certainly credible based on what we know. But there are contradictions in the stories told by the ghosts and the speaker ( yeah mouthpiece for the Traveler, I know, I know). If it were an essay I could give it an A for using what we were given creatively.

                          • Interesting... I don't know how the naming comes into play. Bungie does seem to be heavy on this concept of Wolves though, so basically it may not be a good or evil thing, but moreso every pack out for their own agenda. That includes the forces of Earth, because what little story IS in the game, shows that The Awoken and whoever The Stranger is talking to, are not guardians. The Queen even sits on the throne of one of the Fallen Houses. Also, in one of the missions you fight, "Exiled Fallen Barren." So, the Fallen are not all one force, they are many factions with their own agendas. They keep slaves. They break their own peoples arms off to humiliate and subjugate them (this is how Dregs are made, according to the grimoires). The Hive seem like they're being controlled by something. Whatever that relic is that you weaken, where we fight the giant knight. The Darkness seems like it controls The Hive and The Vex to conquer and absorb planets. Probably why The Hive have so many relics: a shard that drains the traveler and a relic for long distance communication. I can't recall seeing The Hive and The Vex fighting one another. But The Cabal are fighting The Vex on Mars and The Fallen are fighting the Vex on Venus, as well as invading The Moon directly, which was stated to be out of character. They are trying to get their hands on The Shard, which subdues The Traveler, would be my guess. Actually it says The Vex are so evil, they despise other evil. They only seem to be fighting Guardians because Humans are there though. The Vex are most actively fighting The Cabal and The Fallen. Though, it was mentioned that The Vex tried to establish a universal warp, which would allow them to invade every planet simultaneously. Why? If they are just minding their business, doing their religious rituals? The Titans are the first of the Guardians, and they were the first to rise up to protect the people of Earth. None of the guardians or vanguard sects really go back that far. They are more a reaction, whereas the other forces at play seem much older and much more involved. Guardians could be manipulated in it all, but I don't think they are the evil in the equation. Other than maybe being a little naive. If anyone were evil, it would probably be The Speaker. Or The Traveler could be a parasite, as much as The Darkness is. Who knows... until we actually get some explanations. And missions with cut scenes, beyond just replaying the same missions over and over with different modifiers.

                          • If you did not read the grimoies because Bungie is too cheap @$$ to put it in the game proper Humanity during it's golden age created the Darkness and the time loop we are currently in. Right now Rasputin (reported the past self of the traveler) is the only warmind we created (think skuline from terminator) that thinks humanity is worth saving. (thus why he became the traveler) and current line of thinking is the Ghosts are our only hopes of breaking the time loop and saving humanity. (course resurrecting humans kinda does the same thing so...)

                            • Doesn't explain why the other races are warring with one another and us. That's the biggest problem with your hypothesis. If we and the traveler are the bad guys why are they at each others throats and not unified against us? There's also the Queen, she's a wild card considering she has two fallen as body guards but is wanted us to kill the Archon. At your game over screen it says "The Darkness Has Consumed You." The traveler made Venus and Mars hospitable, the Darkness is death and the Traveler is life, you're saying life is a bad thing?
