Are the Guardians total a-holes? As in: are we the bad guys?

Yes

No

What?

Titans, were the greek pantheon's total d*cks, fighting and losing the war against the awesome and just gods, the Olympians. Warlocks, in the legends of old and in modern fantasy, are those who corruptively use magic destructively instead of creatively. Hunters, away from the usually heroic Rangers, are predatorial. As in Hunter is the literal equivalent of predator, someone who kills or traps prey. All of the guardian classes have names that in history and fiction is usually reserved for the antagonists, not the protagonists. The name and description of "bad guys". Additionally, our ONLY meaningful interaction with other intelligent species in our solar system is to kill them. An undead army of killers. Sure, the alien races have attacked us, but did they really? The Hive seems wretched and zombie-like to us, but their most capable fighters are classified as their Acolytes and Knights that fight their battles. Their leaders are Exalted, with titles like Wizards and Princes. Does the Hive see themselves as noble? Are they seeing themselves how we view the legends of Arthur and Merlin, chasing down The Traveller, an ancient foe, to bring peace to the galaxy once again? How about The Fallen? Did they lose their Empire to the ravages of The Traveller, their own personal Hitler? Does The House of Kings and The House of Winter lead the final hunt, with their Captains, their Servitors, their Lords and their Primes in a valiant chase that they hope will echo in their legends for eons when the traveller and it's undead army is finally defeated? How about the Vex? They can't be good, can they? An organic race of religious robots, going to Venus to protect something they consider at least a Guru, and at most a God. Wouldn't humanity be as forceful to claim a holy relic? Wouldn't humanity be angered when the relic was destroyed, during prayer? I bet parts of humanity, the humanity we know, would to exactly the same. At this point it should be unecessary to point out the valiant vanguard, the Space Marines of the known alien universe, The Cabal. Bravely fighting hostile aliens, chasing down the evil that is The Traveller, with their mighty, well trained, brave army. Their legionarys, centurions, phalanxes, psions and colossi. Under the banner of any Primus, they seem hell-bent on putting and end to the evil magic of the Traveller, it's evil undead army (us) and anyone else who comes in the way. Each faction in Destiny could have a game or a series of books of their own, their own noble purposes, and we do not have a clue. Warlocks, Hunters and Titans, the unholy, undead army, infused with the mysterious powers of the lifeless Traveller. Are we the badguys? Are we the D*cks of the universe? What do you think? Please come with suggestions either way. Personally, I think this way of looking at it is pretty cool.

  • It's a bad sign when a game has such a scarce story that fans have to make up conspiracies to help make sense of it. That said, I doubt Bungie put as much thought into the story as you did with this one post.

    • The problem I see with the fallen being a "proud race" or whatever is that the queen has "her fallen". so unless the fallen following her deem her their queen, they are reallt her slaves. No "proud race" would choose slavery over death.

        • Not bad. I loved reading this write-up, it's going to my Faves. It's interesting playing as a more anti-heroic for of character, and this adds a new perspective to it.

          • Four different alien races hate us. One of those are robots. And they are clearly not united under the banner of the darkness, as they kill each other. So its pretty clear to me whose the real bad guy.

            • Crazy theories like this are interesting but otherwise ridiculous. If this game was limited to just the names, this idea would still have hardly any merit. The default warlock subclass uses void energy, so the name warlock is an obvious choice. Also there can be no argument that sunsinger is evil. Personally, I think the name Titan has some negatives attached to it, but there aren't many names that have the same feeling of towering over the battlegield. I don't know how you can see Hunter as being negative, since the WoW class has been named that for years, and the main meaning attached to it at this point is "ranged damage dealer". Why these enemies are evil or at the least deserving of destruction should be obvious, but ill describe it anyway. The Fallen and Hive cannot be conceived of as the wronged party in any way. The Hive are desiccated monsters who have turned the moon into their breeding and experimenting ground. The Fallen don't seem obviously evil, until you take into account the attempted genocide, which cannot be justified. The Vex go terminator on anything not a machine, so it's hard to foresee any kind of coexistence. The Cabal have some names related to Rome and Greece, both conquerors back in the day. This is fitting, because their main motivation is the conquest of what's left once they destroy us. You might as well try to convince us that Hitler was just "toughening up" the minorities he was exterminating.

I would love the future story (destiny 2/3) to be finding out that the Traveller is actually the Darkness itself, just in a "corrupted" form. The shard we find in possession of the hive (or fallen? Can't remember) was actually them attempting to "purify" the shard to return the Darkness closer to it's former strength eons ago before it lost its Traveller to some unknown corruption. These races are actually trying to strike down the corruption (us) that spreads from a dying traveller, who is probably succumbing to the "Light". The Collapse was due to the Darkness unifying the races under its banner to reclaim a part of itself, by all means, even if it means sacrificing itself since it can take the pieces of the Traveller, "purify" each piece, and return the pieces to itself (hence the shard found in the story). Oh my the possibilities for an actual awesome story branching out from this incomplete mess in Destiny make me anxious to see what biggie puts out!!!

If you think about it, there really is no "good' or "bad" side since everyone is doing what they believe is the right thing to do. So technically, what we (the guardians) are doing may seem like the right thing to us but may be the worst possible thing ever to the others.

              • I love your analysis. But TBH, if we were the bad guys then The Stranger probably wouldn't be encouraging us to kill everyone. And the queen and her brother wouldn't be so rotten seeming. I mean, they have a whole house of the fallen as allies. Although, I am hoping in Bungie fashion that we somehow end up aligning ourselves with one of the fallen houses at some point.

              • There is a lot of variables here. I wonder what our relationship with our previous guardian/s in destiny 2? Like if we would be same guardian or a son/daughter of the guardian or if we have some other relation or no relation at all. At the rate of the story so far i dont think we would figure it out by destiny 2. Are ghosts tell us they are the bad guys but they are the travelers creation. I wonder who would tell us that the traveler is evil or how we would find out, I think it would have to be someone like the cryptarch (not likely) or Xur or even the Queen/her brother/her emissary. If not that it might be a special intelligent alien that figures out how to communicate with us.

              • If this ended up as Dark Souls, where we're pretty much the bad guy the entire time without realizing it unless we really looked further into it. I'd definitely like that.

              • Dude... we are freakin ZOMBIES. Remember the Speaker telling you that the kids used to be told stories to scare them... but now the children are scared anyway. THEY ARE SCARED OF THE ZOMBIES.... Actually I thing the Hive are bad, the Cabal are just mercs looking for loot, the Fallen are actually the remains of a GOOD empire that got ruined by either the Traveller or another terraformer. Perhaps there are two Terraformers called Light and Dark. Imagine a terraforming probe that tries to terraform an already inhabited planet... could that be the reason for the Fallen to lose their home... Do they see us working with the Traveller and see us (incorrectly) as the architect of their plight? Makes sense to me.

              • That would be an interesting twist. The Traveler did come to our system in an attempt to hide, then came across a race of insane primates that have a history of violence against itself. Maybe The Traveler thought it could raise an army to combat it's enemies. But like you said, maybe The Traveler is the villain, and by extension, we are too. As explained by the Ghost in one of the Venus missions, the ruins are millions (billions?) of years old, and The Vex are interacting with them easily. Could Venus be an old outpost that they're dusting off, old property of theirs that they set up to watch us and notify them of contact with The Traveler (Timey-wimey as the are and all that jazz)...... Ohhhhh do you have the brain juices going

The Hive worship the Darkness and have apparently served as its vanguard for ages. They've seen thousands of worlds and civilizations consumed and intend for the same to happen to Earth. Sweeping conquest that wipes out all life in its way is obviously evil. The Vex convert entire planets into machines, destroying their environment and eventually the planet itself. Plus they dick around with the time-stream, which is a giant no-no. The Cabal are aggressive expansionists that blow up planets and moons for shits and giggles. They've already screwed up Phobos' orbit. The Fallen are the least "bad" due to their fractured status. Some Houses are better than others. The Devils are clearly evil and actively seeking to wipe out humanity just so they can pillage our civilization. Hell, just look at the giant bone piles in their lair; no force of good would decorate like that. More than likely, the Fallen are past victims of the Darkness, and follow it across space to pick apart the ruins it leaves behind, like parasites.

                    • I think this is a bit of simplistic view personally. What if there are just multiple extremely powerful entities in the universe (Traveler, the thing that is leading the vex, Oryx, maybe one for the cabal, and one for the fallen). I don't believe it is possible to say if any of them are inherently evil, but for some reason (maybe only one was aggressive, or just a feud or power struggle) they feel the need to fight with one another. Only they can't actually fight directly they need to get "lesser" beings to fight for them. When we were attacked the traveler protected us to insure that it would still have soldiers to fight for it (it bet on us rather than trying to find new followers). Therefore, we are neither good nor evil; we are just soldiers fighting for a cause that our collective peoples, chose to stand beside, fighting in order not to be destroyed.
I think that the "stranger" knows some of the truth; however she must believe that for some reason we aren't as threatening as some of the others. Perhaps the traveler isn't as dangerous as whatever leads the vex (pretty sure we only killed a part of it), or perhaps it is because we seem to be more capable of thinking freely.
Just my 2 cents.
