I'd like to start by saying that I'm a PS4 gamer. Over the many months of Destiny I've been joyous/proud of the fantastic advertising done on behalf of PlayStation for Destiny, highlighting not only the console's fantastic capabilities for Bungie's newest franchise, but also some pretty kick-ass exclusive content.
Console wars have been, and will be. As long as there is competition, there will be businesses and individuals taking proverbial arms against one another doing all they can to ensure the success of their chosen side. But are there limits that should be respected or certain boundaries enacted to keep things from going 'too far'? As much as I hate to say it, "yes, there should be". Now before I stray too far...
I recently learned that the reason there hasn't been any advertising from the Microsoft side of this battle is because they weren't allowed to. What about free speech, capitalism, free-market economies and the like? Nope. Activision isn't having any of that. Why? Because Sony bought exclusive rights.
And that's the part that bothers me. I like Sony, LOVE Bungie, respect Microsoft, and have been supporting Activision in some form or fashion for over 30 years. But since when should a publisher be able to restrict advertising of a product? Inappropriate or offensive advertising, sure. But a complete blackout 'or else'? Sorry Activision, you've gone too far this time.
I'm all for pre-order bonuses (Vanguard Armory), dealer exclusives (Red Sparrow), DLC (Frontier Ghost Skin), and collectible goodies (Ghost Edition), so long as everyone gets a chance to take part, speak their part, and -most importantly- choose.
I'm too far invested into Destiny to back out now. Plus, I'm fairly certain that Bungie had nothing to do with this limitation. But if this is how future multiplatform releases will be handled, then I'll be taking my business elsewhere. I still think PS4 is King, Bungie is Legend, and Destiny will be Epic. But let the products speak for themselves. Three of the four companies involved here come from a country that stands (and fights) for freedom of speech. Let's keep it that way.

5 通の返信NightHawk_12により編集済み: 9/6/2014 10:54:11 PMIt's 2014. This practice has been going on for decades through multiple manufacturers and multiple publishers. This isn't new. Are you seriously getting on this train now?

2 通の返信Microsoft does the same thing with their exclusive deals. Have you ever seen a COD playstation ad?

Having exclusives is all part of the gaming business now.I play on an Xbox console. I do not have the money to buy two consoles, I have to work for all the money I get. I do not mind that Playstation players get more exclusives, that's cool; I am not greedy, I'll take what I can get. What you seem to be complaining about is not a personal injustice though, it is a matter of principle. Capitalism works off a system of a free marketplace, where anyone, no matter their race, social position, or country of origin has an equal opportunity to succeed. Opportunity is the key word here. Those who work, can start from the bottom and make improvements in their lives. The ability to advertise products and services is essential for this system so that all businesses, whether big or small, and the individual employees of said businesses have an opportunity to be successful. Restricting those rights for an already successful company like Microsoft probably isn't a big deal, they will recover from any loss that they suffer as a result, but the complaint made here is one against the principle of the practice. I am not sure if I totally agree that this practice violates capitalism as long as both companies had an equal opportunity to bid for the advertising rights. Like godModeAlpha pointed out, someone had to pay for the production costs. I don't personally like the practice, seems a bit cheap and unsportsmanlike, but I do not think it will destroy the industry.

1 返信The big publishers are like a parasite sucking life from the gaming industry, trying to weave in as much bullshit as possible so they can take more of our money. EA, Ubisoft, and Activision being the chief offenders. And it's not like we have an alternative; they can do what they want without consequence because as long as they keep publishing games, people will keep buying them. We can't win.

Tony_Tekillaにより編集済み: 9/7/2014 5:23:03 PMGreat rant but the company you should blame here is solely is Activision, NOT Sony, and definitely NOT Bungie. So your Post title is misleading. Like Tomb Raider it's the publishers that determine who will be the lead console (for a fee of course), in this case it was Sony. Gone are the days of £500K - £5M game budgets. AAA games cost money nowadays. You and I pay for a game after it has been released ... Who is going to pay for the lights, servers, devs, artists, and the most expensive of all advertising before the game is released? Deals such as this happens more often than you know and I'd rather have them with a great product delivered.

19 通の返信Microsoft has done this for many games and many years! It's about time PlayStation gets something awesome!

1 返信I'm an Xbox gamer, and I've wanted to be neutral in this war. Games are games, it's only a shame that some consoles get one over another. But even that said, I honestly find Sony's marketing practices rather rude. When Xbone stumbled out of the gate, Sony kicked them down. Sony has indirectly bitch slapped Xbox several times, and now this. I can respect my fellow gamers, but somehow I can't respect a company who digs this hard into it's competitor. Hate if you wish, but an opinion is an opinion.

Give it up bro. It's sad that you take a stand in something this trivial. There are far more important things to take a stand against, but a video game for a multi billion dollar company? This post says more about you than it does Activision, Bungie, or Sony.
-
OP - I can't fault you for taking a principled stand against inequity - sounds like your heart is in the right place. Surely, however, there are more deserving recipients of you sympathy than Microsoft....and more worthy targets of your ire than sony. The law doesn't quite work the way you are assuming...these actions are all fair play.

Pretty standard practice these days tbh. I would be pissed if they released it as a console exclusive even though i have both ps4 and x1 i don't really touch my x1 but i have friends who don't have a ps4 but mostly i feel sorry for my gaming pc :-( this would be perfecto on it!!

Deified13により編集済み: 9/7/2014 5:06:48 PMYou should pay closer attention to the business. This happens on a regular basis. It will more that likely happen with Microsoft with Raise of the Tomb Raider as it is a timed XBOX exclusive. It is part of the gaming industry, just like games getting pushed back, being released broken and having to have first day patching to fix them.
-
On the basis you are coming from- I totally agree. It really has bothered me that, with the way the game has been 'restricted'/allowed to be advertised I wouldn't be surprised how many people were SURPRISED to learn it was also on Xbox at all.
-
I can see where you're coming from. The way I'm looking at this is that this title is going to be one of the biggest ones for Sony. Microsoft has Halo and they've had their on exclusive deal with squar-enix, Rise of the Tomb Raider. I want to believe that this wont be an ongoing trend with the advertising side of gaming but I'm willing to deal with it. As long as great games are being made and are available to everyone its all good.
-
Microsoft played it smart like when they made that destiny fragrence. It was more free speech because they werent marketing and they wanted to let it be more known that it was out on Xbox and they knew it will hit a bigger audience because how viral it will go. Im not an xbox fanboy im a sony user. Can't wait until release day!
-
1 返信I was going to explain where you were wrong but it looks like everyone else has already done that. :)

4 通の返信Umm. Freedom of speech can't be utilized by corporations. Freedom of speech is for the america people. Also there have been plenty time Sony has not been able to show commercials of cod and I guess other games like madden. This is the way the industry works unfortunately. But once they lose the exclusivities, the consoles come to a end

1 返信The REAL shame of the matter is Xbox got COD rights over Destiny...I have no idea why. Thats like going to the Race track, looking at a fine speicemen of a horse yet betting on the 3 legged mule. Dang Shame.
