My original post is here: http://pastebin.com/BL75R0Fs - but in case you haven't heard, it was confirmed yesterday that there is no matchmaking for raids; 'friends-only'.
Update: So, we have the update from Luke Smith, Raid Design Lead. The quote of which you can see at the bottom of this post. I'd also like to outline a few simple points here.
Firstly, if Bungie do not support raid matchmaking, players will find a way to do it themselves. People everywhere are already resorting to swapping gamertags/psn over forums. This isn't 'hardcore clanship', this is matchmaking in its simplest form. People everywhere are resorting to joining clans specifically for the purpose of raiding. Again, this isn't 'hardcore clanship', this is random people joining other random people specifically for the purpose of raiding. This is matchmaking in its simplest form. This isn't people forming guild like bonds in order to conquer with coordination and investment. This is people desperately joining up with whoever they can just so they can raid. You don't have to take my word for it, this is observable on any social gaming medium where there is an interest in Destiny right now; b.net, reddit, neogaf, and anywhere else you can think of.
Secondly, difficulty. It's all relative. What I deem 'very difficult' is not the same as what you deem 'very difficult'. Your idea of 'very difficult' may be equivalent to my idea of 'not so difficult' - the same holds true for one's sense of 'enjoyment' - if the raid requires 'dedication' in 'cooperation' and 'investment', these are not specifications that are inherent to 'friends'. These are the characteristics of those who choose to adopt said characteristics. It doesn't matter whether i'm in a clan, a random group, or with one of my 'friends'. If I want to communicate and invest my time, I will do so. The same can be said for any player, clan or none, group or none, lots of friends or no friends. So then how is the 'barrier' that defines the raid as 'friends-only', determined by two characteristics that don't apply only to 'friends? It's not logical.
It seems to me that Bungie's actual goal here is for the raid to be as inaccessible, and uncompleted, for as long as possible; to artificially extend the playtime of the game. It's true that this is simple conjecture. It's true that at this point in time it is merely my 'opinion', but it is the only logical explanation.
Thirdly, excuses. There are those who say that making the raid more accessible will encourage 'crying' from 'casuals' who can't handle the 'difficulty'. That raids are 'this' or 'that' and 'not for you'. If I want to attempt a raid I damn well bloody will. Raids are for everybody who has the balls to attempt them. And that's the point here, everybody and their mums are desperately joining up with anybody else, just to raid.
It's not going to be 'hardcore groups', whatever that means, being the only ones who attempt it. It's going to be by hundreds, thousands, of those who simply chose to 'matchmake' regardless. As they are already doing. I wouldn't be surpised if the raid gets completed by a group who simply swapped their gamertags/psn on a forum right before the raid, and only met in-game upon entering the raid. At some point, Bungie will have to acknowledge it.
At what difficulty somebody perceives the raid, is what will decide if somebody chooses to 'cry' to the forum. It doesn't have to be a 'casual', whatever that means, when most people are showing the commitment necessary to at least attempt the raid. Somebody who has joined a clan, or swapped their gamertag, or is playing with friends, will complain that the raid is too difficult, if they want to. No amount of 'clan', 'friend', or 'hardcore' status will determine this for them. Somebody who wants to complain over difficulty, will indeed complain over difficulty, whether they're in a clan or not.
This means that the more accessible the raid, or any aspect of the game, the more people will complain, because more people will be accessing it. It's that simple. It has nothing to do with 'clans' or 'friends' or 'casuals' or 'hardcore'. Complainers will complain, and more people means more complaints.
Fourth, longevity. Destiny is a franchise, the first of up to four sequels and four expansions. In a year's time, Destiny will be outdated by its expansion; after that, the sequel. This 'gear' you think you're entitled to for proclaiming yourself as 'hardcore', won't mean anything for any significant amount of time. You won't 'become legend' no matter how many times Bungie bangs it into your ears.
On top of that, a dedicated player is a dedicated player; somebody who invests their time matchmaking and somebody who invests their time with 'friends' are equally invested. Whatever sense of entitlement you have for calling yourself 'hardcore' or playing with 'friends', is completely redundant.
Dedication is determined by the player. Investment is determined by the player. Communication is determined by the player. Coordination is determined by the player. Difficulty is perceived by the player. Not 'friends'. Not matchmaking. Not 'clans'.
"This is not real life. You don't go into a raid, fail and die in real life like you would going for the peak of K2. This is a video game where if you lose you can try again and that's what every raider will do. Fail and fail and fail until they succeed. MM does not change that for anyone whether you choose to use it or not." - kingofthejuice
Update from Luke Smith, Raid Design Lead:
Source: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=123373556&postcount=1085
I understand everyone's frustration about the decision to not have matchmaking in a post-matchmaking world. I also understand the limitations that this places on the activity's adoption at scale.
That barrier to entry - the requirement that you get a group of people together and venture into something that is going to challenge your ability to work together (first) and your thumbs (second) - is a barrier I was willing to erect to preserve the activity goals.
Bleeding edge hardcore groups will invest some significant amount of time in figuring out the encounters and making their way through the Vault.
I fully expect groups to beat Normal mode in the first week its available. This is intentional, I'd like any group that is motivated and willing to cooperate to make their way through the Raid on Normal. I've talked some about thumbskill challenge vs. investment challenge vs. cooperation challenge in some interviews, and the Normal Raid difficulty prioritizes cooperation challenge and investment challenge.
I expect Hard mode to take longer. Once your group learns the encounters, you will be able to get through the Raid significantly faster than 3 hours.
However, the first time through, learning everything and arranging your group will take some hard-to-predict amount of time until some clan releases their strategies on YouTube.
The Vault of Glass is in many ways an activity that will build groups from the disparate people who come together to try and make their way through it. It's very much a team-building exercise.
If you're going to stream it this Fall, please feel free to let me know here. I'd love to tune in.
I'd hate to be halfway through a raid that takes 6 people and have 2 guys rage quit. People quit on me every time I went to the devils lair. Imagine the quitters at the vault of glass! Would you wanna pop into a raid that's already been halfway completed by people just because you were placed into an existing game?

Communication is key. During the beta you could only use in-game chat with the friends who joined your fireteam. In the strike the Guardians that join your fireteam via automatic matchmaking weren't able to talk to you and vice versa. This is the reason automatic matchmaking is not supported for Raids.

This has been covered so many times, their not backing down on this. You haven't played the game yet. You have no idea what it'll be like or how hard it'll be. No one does. They say this system is the way they want it. It's their game to make, you get to play it, if you don't like it don't play it, there's plenty of people who will play it. Suck it up, not everything in life goes your way, deal with it.

7 通の返信Datto explains it well.
People everywhere are already resorting to swapping gamertags/psn over forums. This isn't 'hardcore clanship', this is matchmaking in its simplest form.
And the first hurdle, communication, has been overcome. Something they preach repeatedly when it comes to raids is communication. Communication. Communication. Communication. So all parties involved are forced to communicate before hand, the most important part (from the sounds of it) of the raid. You have instantly weeded out people unwilling to communicate. Good job.

3 通の返信IM TOO LAZY TO GO OUT AND GET SOME FRIENDS TO PLAY A VIDEOGAME WITH. OH AND MY FRIENDS DONT PLAY VIDEOGAMES BUT THE PEOPLE AT GAMESTOP OR THE FORUMS DO!!!! THIS IS UNNACEPTABLE BUNGIE, MAKE THE GAME SO THAT I CAN WIN. This is about how ridiculous all of these posts are

I beat the raid with random people I met on this forum. We never had met prior. It took 3 hours to get the team together. 3 hours! That's just as long as the raid could take, and eventually, like all games, the community will diminish. It will be extremely hard in the future to get a group. Matchmaking needs to be a part of this game. Even if it doesn't work out for the group you get matched with, you can at least a attempt the raid in a quicker fashion. Everybody should be able to try. It is a game after all, meant to be played for fun. I shouldn't have to put up a Guardian Seeking Guardian ad like this is a fugging Craigslist.

This is the reason bungie have said they are considering implementing matchmaking! Ever since the vog became unlocked all thats happened is people post topics saying ps4 lv 27 titan raid send me an invite! Theres no difference from people teaming up this way than people being matched to each other, other than lazy design by bungie! Sort it out as so many decent players who would tear the vog a new one arent able to play it!

Naditzuにより編集済み: 10/4/2014 11:36:07 PMMy problem with Bungie not allowing a Raid Matchmaking system is that I paid for this game like everyone else did. Now I'm being told "Sorry, since you don't know enough people with an XB1 or the spare time, you can just look at the end game content you can't beat". I can't figure out why but Bungie seems to be getting some sort of pleasure out of forcing unwanted interactions between people. Public Events, lack of local co-op, no offline capability, no match making for the hardest of content, etc. It would be different if this was a F2P MMO or something along those lines where I didn't pay $60 USD + tax to get content I may never have a chance to complete. The game as it stands right now (unless you're a PvP player also) is pretty stale and repetitive without me not being able to do everything due to a lack of players. It's insanely hard to find 5 other people for a Raid. I have 2 friends with XB1 who are never available at the same times and both usually for less than the time it would take to complete even if they were. I could go to the Tower of Forums like the OP said but that is no different than a random matchmaking (well it is, it's harder and much more time consuming). So if people are just doing this anyway I fail to see how anyone can argue against Matchmaking as if you don't need it now, you won't need it then either... but if a time comes when you do, it'll be there.
-
Matchmaking should be a thing for every raid/strike/mission whatever. Destiny is supposed to be a MMO, but right now most the high-level content is only accessible by people with enough friends (that are online at the same time, if you even have them) or the willingness to find people to match up with them through 3rd party means. Without matchmaking, the MMO aspect is completely useless. They might have well made it a singleplayer game with 3 or 4 player co-op, Borderlands style. I personally only have 2 friends who play Destiny with me, one who hasn't put in enough play time to do any of the higher level stuff with me. So basically the only thing I get out of it being a 'MMO' is seeing people wander past me while I do patrols, or having people slaughter me in the Crucible... So yeah, matchmaking plzthx. I'll gladly wade through strangers who might not be able to do the content for a chance to actually TRY it.

1 返信Let me tell you after getting all the way to Awakening the throne before we had to stop.... Matchmaking. On. VoG. Is. A. HORRIBLE. Idea. One) VoG unlocks for players around, what, lvl 24-25? With matchmaking, the teams you'd get would always be infiltrated with low level scrubs that don't want to take the time to improve themselves before taking on this challenge. Two) Communication. I have NEVER used this much communication between players that was not banter in my whole gaming life. A headset is not required to play the Vault, and many people don't even have one. MM would see 2-3 players on your team that don't use headsets, throwing off the whole team, goin off on solo adventures in the vault, ignoring orders to assist the team, etc. Three) The infamous AFK. 6 people on VoG is hard enough. Try 5 or 4 and see how far people get. Even if they get kicked or time out, there's no guarantee of another player coming in. And this also helps with my last point... Four) Fireteam leader saves progress. 2 things happen here. ONE, you get a bad match with some AFKers and no-mic soloists. You manage to get past a few parts, but have 3-4 players leave and no one joins. Instead of tackling the impossible, you leave too, only to find that you weren't the fireteam leader....progress lost. TWO, the group is good and you get to Atheon...but the fireteam leader is a troll/douche/inconsiderate person who thought they could complete this on a limited timeframe. Leader quits, pulling everyone out. You just lost all that work. Cooperative Matchmaking for extremely difficult games is good ONLY if the players are perfect.

4 通の返信People keep saying 'just find some friends' the point is I shouldn't have to, by now everyone has seen someone doing the raid and it's not as if your playing tomb raider... it's not hard to figure it out... there is absolutely no reason why there shouldn't be matchmaking, and I doubt anyone could prove me otherwise, not everyone has 6 friends all with an Xbox One, all level 28 all on at the same time for 3 hours, I would much rather have a go and have some guy leave in the middle of it than not being able to attempt it at all, that's what checkpoints are for, same for nightfall strikes to, Why? why should I need a fire team for that? Honestly Bungie, whatever reason your doing this for it is stupid a waste of peoples time, just sort it!

TBH, I'm not the super social media guy, not even on Facebook lol. For good reasons. Still since I bought this games, the number of friends on my PSN rose dramatically due to the lack of matchmaking ingame. I have to send or receive FR and then join or invite players. It's really no big deal actually. Furthermore you'll find lots of ppl to do raids/Nighfall etc. on the forums all the time.As a matter of fact there is a great number of players I can invite or join through my friends list, so actually I won't need any matchmaking mechanics by now. I would have wished for matchmaking for raids etc. when I started playing this game, but by now everybody should have realised there's the forums and PSN where it's easy to find/recruit players. Only thing that bugs me is the crappy and slow PSN social features. Sometimes it won't load notifications like FRs or messages instantly. At other times it takes ages to load my friends list or send/accept invites. Apart from this it's all good imho.
-
It's meant to make groups of people working together and organized. However, the fact that it's completely barred from matchmaking is silly. I'm a big boy Bungie, I can deal with randoms or play with friends if I feel like it.

Vindicare_templeにより編集済み: 9/25/2014 6:31:00 PMHAH I'm ready to crush the raid but guess what? my friends are still stuck at lvl 23/24 and are ready to abandon the game! I solo the weekly strikes but am not able to do the the shitheel raid.....GTFO the fool that thought this was a good idea! add a level and gear cap and 9/10 they will be better than your "friends".. this is a joke.. as for quitters it's called "drop in drop out" one replaced another, never had any problems in concern with people leavening in strikes. BTW "luke" is it? you're a -blam!-wit!
-
1 返信We need MM. I am not a fan of Luke at all. He clearly only wants a very very small number of the ppl who payed full price for Destiny to game all of Destiny. I am not cool with Elitists.

4 通の返信I figured it all out. I don't like being blocked from part of the game I paid for because of my situation (it doesn't matter what it is. it is.) so I canceled my pre-order. If Bungie ever changes it, I'll repurchase. Otherwise, I'll play something that's more in line with what I like. If you don't like it, don't put up with it. If you do, play it. Bungie has a right to lose sales any way they want.

1 返信The subject of raid matchmaking seems to be dividing the community more than the 'console war'. I am for a Raid matchmaker, but under the understanding that the stats taken from it for balance purposes are weighed efficently. This means that while more people accessing it and failing at certain points doesn't mean things get easier, but if tons of random people are clearing certain content then it may need making more difficult. What i would prefer is vastly inproved social tools. You should never have to leave a game to find people to play with, or to talk either via voice or text. While proximity chat can and will be used to abuse or annoy people, that is what mute and blacklist and report options are for. All of the current systems destiny is being released on have keyboard support, from micro keyboards to wireless and blu tooth keyboards as will as controller input to keyboard, so text based system can be implemented allowing for regional chat that expands beyond the players you can see.
-
No because each team of 6 has a lockout number and if one person cant make it the next day, ur either going to have to wait for the next week or find another person without a lockout number. Also communication is required so much....
-
Hey since it seems people have been following the updates and interviews from Bungie did they noticed that Bungie said that Raid progress can be saved so you can continue later? Something that clearly would not work if you are in a match made game with random people.
