I find this a little frustrating because theres a game called war thunder [http://warthunder.com] that doesn't even have exploring features and is purely a action multiplayer with world war 2 planes and tanks and the the developers call it an mmo. And mmo stands for massively multiplayer online. Which is clearly what destiny is doing having multiplayer for the massive amount of people playing on online so in my eyes it's an mmo.
But what do you guys think?

9 通の返信I don't get why people can't wrap their heads around this. (Maybe your heads aren't stretchy) Destiny, while having various features typical of a Massively Multiplayer Online Game, is NOT an MMO, for it lacks one key element: it is not massively multiplayer. On the contrary, it is moreso simply a cooperative FPS, with some fancy elements of matchmaking a couple encounters with about two other Co-op teams. "But that's an MMO! You run in open worlds and meet people!" No, it is not. There is nothing "massively multiplayer" about encountering 8 other players. In fact, I'd wager that you do it every day in CoD, BF, Halo, or whatever game floats your boat. "But those are in matchmaking lobbies, not a world!" Just because the matchmaking is fancier doesn't change the core facts. MMOs load up everyone in a world at once- You can leave an area and cone back to find that same noob. Not so with Destiny. Once they're gone, they're gone, and you have the entire wilderness to yourself. Just you three. To explore. I could continue, but I believe you'll understand once you've read this.

It's not a true MMO though. Having Destiny be an MMO would mean that everywhere you walked, other players would be visible and in your game at all times. Destiny had MMO areas where a "matchmaking" kind if system behind the scenes will draw out other players into a single area, like the tower for instance. But once you leave the tower and head off to a certain area, let's say the moon, you'll be on your own or with your group, only finding other players in zones that have that seamless player integration thingamadoodle.

MMO is too generic of a term allot means is that it's massive, multiplayer and online. Therefore yes Destiny falls into this generic category but just as any game Bungie wants this to stand out from the rest. In order to make their 10yr ambition a reality they can't just rely on their past achievements they need to be unique, stand out from the others and develop something unique and emersive.

Shared world shooter, we will be matched with players across public spaces and even then we will not be matched with 1,000 other players across the same space. I'm not so sure how the Tower will be handled but the idea is to have a limited amount of players sharing a space. Not 100's of players on screen at once. So shared world sounds about right.

3 通の返信It's not a MMO. It's a co-op game with small MMO elements along with match making It only has raids public events and social hubs. It doesn't have an those big rpg elements most mmos have. Etc

Mostly because it is not a stereotypical MMO It may be doing a lot of MMO-like things, but all of those things are by choice. If you want to, you will be able to play through this game without ever pairing up with anyone else, or even seeing anyone else. This is what makes it fundamentally different from most MMO's. This game does not require you to sit in the world with everybody else ALL OF THE TIME. Only when you so choose. This is a new style of game that is combining aspects from many different genres.

Destiny is not MMO, public events are what you're thinking of, but there can only be a limited amount of people in a public event and massive multiplayer online means hundreds if not thousands of players and the only people that can be with you in story mission is your fire team. Fire teams are made up of three people. So the term MMO is miss used here.

An MMO needs more than just a massive amount of people playing online. If it was just based on players being online, then CoD and Halo would fit into that category. It has to be a massive amount of people playing together in the same space. This is what Destiny lacks.

MMO primarily implies a massive amount of players you can interact with at any given time. Think WoW. In any given server, you can come in contact with everyone playing in one location. With WoW specifically, that could be thousands of players at once. Destiny has elements of an MMO, in that there will be many players online at any given time, though you'll only be able to interact with a set number at any one time. What that number is depends on the location and game mode you're in. Right now, the max we know of PvP is 12 players (i believe, correct me if i'm wrong), and in the world, during public events the number could be 12, 16, maybe a few more from what we've seen. We still don't know how many we'll be in contact with in social areas, but I don't expect it to be really all that many more. That's far from massive on the general MMO scale. Hence, they shy away from classifying the game as an MMO in the traditional sense.
-
You misunderstand the term MMO, an mmo is when you have tons of players at the same time. There will simply be hundreds of servers full of players cause of next-gen tech, only on the tower will you see different players, and it may not be every player, just the ones on that server. A fireteam consists of three peeps, with a few public areas. Mmos have "bad reputations" for being those "nerdy games" on computers, or expensive games due to subscription. Bungie doesn't want their game to be in that area of gaming, it's really an RPG, with fps for the combat, does that make sense?
"Not at all. Do you guys ever get tired of us insisting it's not an MMO? Debate about this game is always fun, and we welcome it," Bungie said. "The ideas that are shaping Destiny come from a lot of different places. We're drawing the best elements from experiences we love. Like an MMO, our game will compel you to explore."
I hope this helps...............

4 通の返信MMO tends to imply alot of players in the world at one. It seems Destiny wont have much more than 16. It just uses background matchmaking to give the illusion a huge amount of people are in your game all at once, as you will come across many players in one sitting.
-
1 返信do not forget in most mmo's you do not play in fps mode and you have quick slot UI. So not an mmo in my opinion

2 通の返信Probably because three people in a team isn't massive. You'll never see more than 12 players in the game at the same time.
