The cop should face no penalties, plain and simple. Just as the officer said, he was just doing his job. With that said, I still feel bad for the old man. He probably wasn't thinking about how suspicious it would look, since he was probably so used to just going out and grabbing his cane. This is one of those instances where no one was at fault.

6 通の返信Arashi Calunataにより編集済み: 3/16/2014 6:06:33 AMI think they are both at fault. Mainly the cop, to be honest, because he didn't seem to attempt to warn the old man against moving before he opened fire. Then again, I'm only assuming this from what I've read of the replies on The Flood. However, despite what Camnator seems to think, you really should never get out of your car. It's more... Well, I would say legal. But you might end up like the old man if you leave your vehicle.

Nobody was killed, thank God. Next time, don't hobble out of your car at night, ignore the Officer, and reach for something in the truck bed. That's a really stupid move.

4 通の返信#1: I can tell the Officer is genuinely sorry about what he did. I forgive him #2: The Vet said he'd be alright, what a bad ass for a 70 year old man #3: The vet survived thankfully #4: A horrible mistake.. thankfully with a not so bad ending. #5: Hopefully the Officer learns from his obvious mistake.

16 通の返信Sandtrapにより編集済み: 3/16/2014 2:40:58 AMIt's a valuable lesson on both party's accounts. It's a good thing that events played out the way they did, as they could have been a hell of a lot worse. It's an honest mistake that both made. But I can see where both were coming from. It's an actual trick you can use on cops if they pull you over and you have no seatbelt on. You step out of the car and they can't see if you didn't have it on. But that makes cops jumpy, and for good reason. The cop didn't neccessarily have to shoot him, he could have fired a warning shot, but even still. If the tables were suddenly turned, and the guy was pulling a gun out, and the cop hadn't acted, he would have been in trouble. But thankfully, it's a valuable life lesson for both. Next time either stay in the car or at least tell the officer what you're reaching for. And judging by the officer's reaction, he won't be so trigger jumpy next time.

2 通の返信>70 Year Old man shot with a gun >leans against car >"I'll be alright" Holy crap. What a BAMF. He doesn't even sound like he's in pain. Saw this on the news. It was an honest mistake. Neither the cop or the man are at fault. In the end the vet lived and the cop was heavily beating himself up over it. Both are absolved in my eyes.

6 通の返信Somebody, please tell me that a walking cane and a shotgun like this do not look at the least bit similar. Go ahead, because you can't. And it would even be more difficult to tell at night. The officer really thought the guy had a shotgun and had to do something. He didn't know that it was just a cane The old man should have stayed in his car and not reached for something. Officers have no knowledge with whom they are dealing with and will take anything of suspicious behavior, like reaching for something, as a possible threat

I'm not shocked by this. I wish I could lie and say I was. Everyone is strung too tight, cops included. 5 years ago he would have looked before pulling his gun. Its not the cop's fault. We live in a society were EVERYONE pulls and shoots before they know what's going on. He's just acting like someone in our society does.

8 通の返信No. Just no. That asshole of a cop should learn to use his -blam!-ing brain before going straight to his gun. an OLD man gets out of a vehicle that's expired? Any first assumption is that he's having mental disability problems or something. Clearly the man was in poor walking condition, using the truck as a means of balance. The -blam!-ing shit stain of a cop deserves whatever negative things happen to him.
