I think both sides had their ups and downs in various regions, strengths and weaknesses. In terms of strategy, I'd think Human kind would be better, but only to a certain and specific degree. They didn't have the technology or the numbers to fight the Covenant, and as their backs went against the walls, they had to get more and more cunning as time wore on. Much like how people in prisons come up with ingenious ways of smuggling things in or creating weapons. But they could never go on the offensive because I imagine intelligence was limited. By Reach Human intelligence was only vaguely aware of the head honchos at the top of the Covenant heirachy system, and had little in the way of knowing when and where Prophets would be. From the start Humanity was in a stacked game and all they could do was fight tooth and claw for every inch of space. I'd think if the two sat at the same technological level, they'd be locked in a stalemate. But the Covenant had all this time on their hands to gain a leg up in tactics and space faring, and the fact that it wasn't composed of one species but many, added more weight on things that the UNSC couldn't ever hope to hold up on it's own. They were innovative because they had their backs up against the wall, trapped in a corner without real direction of where and when the Covenant was coming from or who even led them. Meanwhile the Covenant had already taken apart the most basic common language for intercepting and translation, had an understanding of Human military ranking systems, the ins and outs of their spacecraft and other weapons, and so on. It was almost like fighting a conventional war against guerilla warfare. The Covenant could show up any time, with any number of ships, and had the advantage in surprise and intelligence, while Humanity basically had all their cards up front from day one. With that being said, another question that arises is, if there are likely other alien empires out there, and the Covenant was dealing with them as well, then what happens with the collapse of the Covenant? What's to stand in the way of the other empires coming in and plowing over a fractured Covenant and decimated Humanity?

  • With the Technological supremacy being removed The UNSC would have one. The Main Reason they were losing was due to the shields on the ships. It took 2 if not 3 waves to knock one out. Remove that and the UNSC would have done a lot better even if the numbers stated the same. As we both agree on,They had to make up for their deficits in tactics which the covenant rarely employed. The Zerg rushing wouldn't be effective without shields to hide behind. In All honesty it is completely pathetic that the covenant didn't wipe out humanity sooner. Bungie's subtext was "The dangers of dogma" and there is so much irony with this. If the covenant had simply innovated or broken their ideal of "not giving the enemy any attention" Humanity could have been wiped out within 10 years instead of the near 30. We had no idea where they come from. The covenant could have just moved high Charities fleet world to world and the war would have been over. But they didn't due to doctrine. Whereas humanity is breaking it's own laws to survive-which they did.

  • Well, there was also the fact that the Covenant had longer range and better manufacturing than the UNSC as well. It's been noted before that Covenant structures are durable as well, as their hulls are tough, using stronger material than those of UNSC starships. But I would hold back on the UNSC winning so easily if they were matched in technology. At the time the Covenant regarded Humanity as an issue, but not a threat, which was why they treated them as such. And for the most part, they were right. In the grand scheme of things, Humanity wasn't a threat. But what if they were? What if the Covenant regarded them as a true threat and had their military engine going full blast, with the full weight of what they had bearing down on them? Surely if you leaned on the Covenant and started to press them into a corner, they would not fight back harder as well? After all, the entire reason for the forming of the Covenant was because both sides had their backs to a wall, with a gun pressed to each other's heads, and they both realized that rather than end up destroying themselves, there was something to gain by being all buddy buddy.

  • Their Hull plating is an odd area. The Hunter Shield is highly durable and stated to be made of the same material as the capital ships. Yet, Either FS or TFoR stated/implied the only trouble they had was the shields and that the hull plating was much stronger than the UNSC's. Even prior to Contact Harvest you might get the idea of this being a religious crusade as the humans were highly confused as to the nature of the attack. Later on we see that humanity as reclaimers is a threat to the political stability of the covenant and so on. But you brought up how we aren't too sure if they ever started going into full gear or just sent minor forces. At least around the time of Reach we knew the covenant were going all out due to instability. (Crap i miss talking about halo here.)

  • I imagine their hull plating counts for the smaller arsenal the UNSC has on it's ships, lighter cannons and missiles and such. But once you get up into the category of UNSC super weapons, then the field is evened out. Even the Didact's ship took damage from a MAC burst from the Infinity, which shows that even though the Forerunners were that advanced, they were still susceptible too. It's just that the higher up in the ladder you climb, the less effective they got. And this holds true for Lekegolo as well. Their shields were impervious to conventional ammunition and even explosives. It was only once you brought out the big guns like a spartan laser or a tank that their shields didn't stand up as well. Which would make comparative sense on a starship, which would have an even thicker hull than the shield Hunters use.

  • That looks like some sort of laser not a MAC round though even then the technology was enhanced from what they found inside onyx. The unaltered SMACS weren't even slowing him down. But Longswords themselves can take out CAS if there are enough of them. So it can't be That strong.

Which presents to me a new question. I by all means do not remember the calculations of the the amount of energy released when a MAC crashes into it's target, but the energy is immense no? Strong enough to rival or outpace the nuke on Hiroshima correct? If so, I pose this question. If the orbital defense platforms were tickling Didact's ship, then why exactly did the nuke chief set off completely destroy the ship past the point of it repairing itself? I'd imagine if Chief set that nuke off on a planet, and as a comparison shot, the orbital platform fired into a planet's atmosphere as well, I'd be willing to bet that the orbital platform would do scores more damage. And my counter argument to the Infinity's nose lasers is the fact that the guass cannon looks like a brief laser firing as well, along with the smaller MAC platform featured in Reach. As for Longswords taking out Covenant ships, as you said, there needs to be lots of them, and 10 bucks says they all have to concentrate their fire on one area. To do any real damage. Covenant ships while having better armour, have "elegant" shapes and inner workings. Once one area starts taking too much damage, the pretty looking structure will get strained and fall apart without too much of an issue.

  • Yeah, People on several forums have worked out the Energy for a SMAC round and one hitting a planet would not be nice. The Didact's ship being destroyed by a single nuke has upset many people. I don't do any math whatsoever but i can have it brought up on Spacebattles. The general idea is that it wouldn't have been enough to Comp wreck the ship because of how large it is. Even with the shields online the blast wouldn't have been amplified enough to obliterate the ship. Again, i didn't do any of the math behind it. Very good point on the Guass cannons. Taking out captial ships doesn't seem to hard seeing as two long swords alone opened the area above the core in Halo 2. From there you just send a missile.

  • Regarding the nuke, you have to remember that it went off in the ship, and while that ship may not have a crew on it, it still has very important systems. Unfortunately for the Didact, physics still exists in the Halo world. So things heat up, friction becomes greater, and such. Basically the nuke set off a chain reaction inside the ship, fuel blew, electronics blew and sparked, docking areas for all of the drones blew up, and so on. Even though it's a massive ship, the tremendous and countless explosions in it would still tear it apart.

  • Why would the interior of the ship be weaker than the outside if it is made of the same material? I understand that the Didact ship uses older technology But i can't see majority of the materials not being made out of adamantium as the outer hull.

Here's what the wiki says about it
The vessel was highly advanced, even by Forerunner standards. In its fully constructed state, the ship was an ovoid approximately 1,000 meters long. Approximately one third of the ships mass was composed of fuel and engine reactants.
This is what's important.
Approximately one third of the ships mass was composed of fuel and engine reactants.
That explains why it blew apart, 33% of the ship was completely fuel and engine reactants. When that nuke blew, all of that fuel and reactant blew up as well.

  • Vociferous was kind enough to come onto Waypoint a few months ago. He confirmed that despite the visual representation making it look like a DEW, it is indeed two of Infinity's MACs.

This is another instance where i think 343I is trying to cover their mistakes. Recently it was stated "Del rio wasn't talking to palmer but someone else on the deck". Despite A)Him looking directly at her in which she backs up. B)The only other people you see are the Nav Crew in the distant background C)Why the Hell would he order a normal human to arrest a spartan when another spartan is present? It doesn't make sense with what we see. I won't even argue what the cinematic shows. If that was suppose to be a two MACs they made a huge error.

  • Yeah I can see that. But I can't imagine it being an accident. We've known for a considerable time before Halo 4's launch that Infinity's primary weapon is 4 MACs. Personally, I just want Halo to get back to the Halo 3 era MAC guns. I'm getting sick of these laser cannons in Reach and Halo 4. =/
