Purposely leaving out a poll.
Let me start by thanking the company/web team for taking the anti-bullying side and gesturing the protection against a group of people that commonly face harassment. I wish that one day they will make the same efforts towards "retards" and "autistics."
But the argument I'm addressing today is one that a lot of people, especially gay people, have addressed. They believe that by 'criminalizing' the 'gay f-word' they are turning the definition back towards the group. What I mean is that these people believe that the word had evolved to a point where it no longer meant gay or homo anymore. It was still an insult, but when people said it they weren't referring to gay people. However, once the rules tightened over the use of the word, all of a sudden the definition of the word changed again, and now when people say or hear that word, they think gay.
This isn't something that's only existed on this forum and with that word. The word queer had a similar evolution. Queer actually used to be an insult too. But now gay people will proudly call themselves queer because they decided they wouldn't let it be used as an insult, much like the word Yankee during the American Revolution. True, I guess this is different from the f-word in the sense that queer still meant gay and the f-word did not, but in both cases these words had changed so that they no longer were derogatory towards gay people.
I'm not necessarily taking one side or the other, but I want to know if you think the way the CoC handles the word is best for the social justice of gay people, or if handling it an alternative way would be better.

No I think it's stupid. They bandwagon off the n-word and everything the black community does. They want to be equal but they want special privileges and think the smallest thing you do is against them. I hope they all go away.

I believe the word has evolved to mean obnoxious biker gangs that like revving their engines. Think my view mighta been influenced by a vision of little construction paper cutouts of 4th graders.... Hmmm.

1 返信Doesn't matter how often you change your own definition/meaning of a word. Doesn't make it less offensive.

2 通の返信It's bullshit. Really. It's the internet people. Man up. I'm bi, and I have no problems with it. I even got a month ban for saying it. I know a lot of gay people, and they say it. I don't use it to insult people, I use it as a joke. The webteam should seriously get their shit together, because this "new" rule is ridiculous.
-
10 通の返信It's as important a rule as the CoC has. I realize lots of people make the argument that it's "just jokes", but that excuse simply isn't good enough. What comes across as a joke to you, may deeply offend someone else. And not necessarily the person on the receiving end of the comment. People need to realize that everything posted on these forums is viewed by hundreds, if not thousands of people everyday. If a single person visiting this forum takes offense to the comment, then it's one person too many. This place is just as much theirs as it is yours or mine. And everyone deserves a place to visit without the fear of bigotry. Send all the crap you want to your equally unimaginative lackeys through PM's. Hell.. hold Klan rallies all night long through them if you choose. But on the mains.. scour your soul for an ounce of creativity in your words, or enjoy your vacation.

I hate that people believe fag has ANYTHING to do with homosexuality. Homosexuals only insult themselves when making the comparison. They tried stealing the rainbow and the word gay, I'm not letting them take anything. Why would they even want to be faggots? Fag (făg) n. 1. An extremely annoying, inconsiderate person most commonly associated with Harley riders. 2. A loud and obnoxious person who owns or frequently rides a Harley.

1 返信OutHouseにより編集済み: 3/14/2014 1:59:13 PMI dont really mind the COC rules. If ur not an ass the ninjas dont seem to bother u. Words only have as much power as people give them.

2 通の返信So I guess you can't use that word for a cigarette any longer, huh? Like, "Hey there buddy, can I bum a fag?"
-
FairlySplendidにより編集済み: 3/13/2014 4:19:36 PMGay or straight, the word is rarely used as a compliment and is more often than not meant to be hostile, condescending and/or degrading. So it falls under the CoC. Pretty simple really. If you like, we can revisit this discussion in 10-15 years.

I don't think b.net is equipped to advance as grandiose a concept as social justice (nor should that be one of their primary focuses). Additionally, I disagree that social justice can be advanced by hand-wringing over how you choose to use a word. Gay people aren't having a hard time because people are calling them -blam!-, they're having a hard time because people have an irrational hatred of them (with that word being the best/only way they know how to express themselves). Deal with the hatred and the choice of expression will change too. Again, though, that's not something that can be adequately advanced on this website (or really any website).

2 通の返信Language evolves. Stuff like this just keeps it from doing so. Maybe 10, 15, or 20 years from now that word will actually be positive, but rules such as these make it have a more negative connotation than most people give it anymore. Just look up Louis C.K.'s or Chris Rock's bit on the word. It's kind of like the N-word. Some activists want to ban the word, but most of the opponents are actually black people that feel that banning the word gives it a more negative connotation as it basically removes one half of the definition, which is not offensive and is a term of endearment among African Americans. It's all about context.

I try not to call people retards because it is offensive and disrespectful to retards and they can't help being the way they are, but some gays r just trying to go against the grain and be different and that's a stupid way to do it. I heard in a CS Lewis article that there are some gays that try not to be gay but can't help it, if thats true then that sucks but I hate gays and lesbians that just do it to go against the grain and for attention.

This is their site. If you want to be here you follow their rules (I'm not saying you aren't). If they don't want hate-filled speech on their site, that's their choice, not ours. I support them and their choice to filter certain words. I'd rather those words lost the power and impact that they have on people.
-
2 通の返信Why do you think we wouldn't ban for the disrespectful words you used in your OP?
-
1 返信I support their decision. It would be like saying the n word is acceptable just because it's not conventionally used as a slur anymore. There's no place for that language here.
