Before CoD 4, the series was rather obscure compared to the big games of the early 2000s. The sales figures aren't too great, and clearly there wasn't too much talk of the series because I and none of my friends had even heard of Call of Duty until Modern Warfare. Suddenly, MW comes out and is the coolest thing ever, breaking all sorts of ridiculous records and whatnot, being a serious and almost fatal competitor to Halo 3. How did CoD's popularity suddenly explode? To me, the series seems to have come out of nowhere.

IchEsseKinderにより編集済み: 12/2/2013 5:29:39 AMThe creators worked on the Medal of Honor games or something like that. They decided to follow the market and make their own WW2 shooters. Then they decided to take it a step further and make a title set in the modern age which made it stand out

1 返信Infinity Ward made the first Call of Duty for the PC back in 2003 I think? Ever since then, we have gotten a title(s) every year.

Call of Duty didn't come out of nowhere. The first game was very well received and won a bunch of awards. Its cinematic, immersive experience was a first for WWII shooters. I think the use of squadmates was too; MoH just had you playing by yourself. CoD4 launched the franchise to an unprecedented level fame and money and women. But it was a popular game from the beginning.

Call of Duty was great up until Modern Warfare 3. I loved CoD4 and MW2. WaW was great because of the Zombie side-winder feature. I think most people can agree that MW3 is where it all went downhill, and by "most people" I mean everyone except hipsters who think all FPS console games are bad.

Well they started as a PC shooter. Honestly the series didn't have a good entry to the console market with Finest Hour, had a great opening to the Russian campaign though. Wasn't IW though so that's why I gave the second installment a chance on 360. Now days I really miss the docudrama style of the old games had for singleplayer. The action movie format doesn't feel the same.

4 通の返信Call of Duty was big before CoD4. I played CoD2BRO and CoD3 a ton on the original xbox. For me, that was the peak of CoD. It was the only time I played it for fun. Ever since CoD4 I felt like I was grinding to get guns and lost interest when I got them all. It was work, not fun. I think the reason CoD4 was so popular was because it was one of the first modern shooters for consoles. I think people got sick of WWII shooters. I would kill for a new WWII shooter on next gen.

Just because it wasn't #1 doesn't mean it was obscure. And, in fact, before Halo 3 Call of Duty WAS number one on the XBL activity charts regularly. Example.
How did CoD's popularity suddenly explode?
If you mean why it grew, that would be because after 10 years of many people playing Halo day and night, people got tired of it. If not sooner, I have little to no doubt you'll see the same thing happen to another game series in the next 4 years.

They changed a lot about multiplayer games. There was a really addictive RPG-like ranking system with unlocks, fast paced multiplayer, and a really dedicated fan base. Sad thing is, after they revolutionized multiplayer in 2007 they never took any more risks again.

CoD was the main competitor to Medal of Honour back in the day. Those were the two biggest WWII franchises. It was hardly obscure. It went modern and totally changed its multiplayer to the "carrot on a stick" formula that pretty much every FPS uses now.
