Gay dude here. I can say it's about preference ultimately. Although around puberty I was always attracted to other guys. Never really had intimate feelings towards any woman (beside jennifer aniston, seriously, she's hawt) As a kid you don't really have sexually feelings until around puberty age. So at that point I think your self conscious just picks what sex or both. And of course sexuality isn't black or white, it's a spectrum.
