Someone enlighten me. Why can't two people just live together and say they're married? Despite their sexual identity.

2 通の返信God forbid we forget who we can marry, and decide to walk into town one day going, "I'm in love with my pet gerbil"... I don't care what anyone says, you can't marry a snapping turtle...

1 返信For the reason that divorce exists. There needs to be a set of rules that decides who gets to keep what, because people aren't just going to give stuff up on their own.

3 通の返信Well, they have to get a certificate of marriage first. I live with Squiggy, but we're not married. The reason homosexuals can't get married is because we have a whole bunch of old fashioned puritan laws. Once we get rid of those, we should be good to go and you'll be able to marry whoever you want.

Because we're too much of the following: Homophobic Racist Anti-Waifuist(Or just against object marrying, either way) And afraid to marry animals. So we let the "big strong powerful" Government handle it for us.

1 返信marriage laws exist to ensure the rights of married couples. for example: say a married person was hospitalised because of attempted murder and their spouse wanted to see them. assuming the patient was unconscious, it would be difficult to verify that the spouse was actually married to them without marriage laws and would be denied visitation. of course, that is only a small part of all the rights entitled to married couples (such as shared income, domicile, guardianship, insurance, etc...) however, some marriage laws have been created to restrict access and the rights of marriage to some couples for arbitrary reasons and i personally find those laws immoral.
i think we should replace the legal term for marriage with a new term like domestic partnership for both homosexual and heterosexual couples and give them all the same rights as legal marriages entitled them to, thus eliminating the religious conflict involved.
It's sort of a weird combination of practicality (such as who can make decisions for you when you are on life-support), religion (Christianity and company saying only male-female marriages are right), and culture (such as divorces and how children are raised)

Because it is a legal agreement. All possessions, debts, assets, finances, real estate, children... you name it are all part of the legal marriage agreement. So laws. Many however are archaic and flawed (speaking of male/female unions for this part). If it were purely for religious reasons, the same laws would be different, and much, much fewer.
