Anyone scared about PVP?

First of all I know this is Bungie and it is going to be a great game. But I can't help but wonder, if you keep all your weapons throughout the entirety of the game including PVP, won't someone have the best weapons in the game and someone could have the worst creating an uneven/unfair match? If PVP were devised by level it might work as the people with higher class guns are supposedly higher level. What are your thoughts on this?

  • We definitely will take our guns we find everywhere in the game, including into PvP. The design concern you've brought up is definitely one Bungie has considered and acknowledged, though at this moment we do not yet know which implementations they've chosen to mitigate that risk. But yeah, it really wouldn't be that hard to assign a "Power Score" to the loot you've found in an attempt to weight how strong your character's gear is, and then when trying to match you up against players you factor that in as an additional field so that it tries to find both a good match skill-wise but also a good match equipment-wise.

    • Personally, team-based competitive MP is my favorite aspect of the FPS genre so this is the issue I am watching most closely. I can enjoy some co-op MP as well, but teaming up against AI hordes simply doesn't take me to that same level of competitiveness, nor does it give me the same level of satisfaction from a win - or repeated face-palms from a loss. No amount of programming genius or hardware resources can match what a fellow gamer can do when he/she has decided that nothing else in life at that moment is more important than getting to tea-bag your various body parts strewn across the battlefield. Pretty sure I'm not alone in all that. That said, I do have some concern about whether Bungie will be able to pull off a solid and satisfying competitive MP experience with Destiny. True, Bungie helped establish competitive MP for console gaming via the HALO franchise, soon after joined by the Call of Duty/Modern Warfare franchise. But this occurred within the FPS genre. Destiny, on the other hand, is a combination of genres, including RPG. Traditionally, FPS games have discrete single player and multiplayer components and the character in single player is 'static' and doesn't cross over into the multiplayer in any really meaningful way, if at all. In Destiny our characters are not 'static' and will grow in skill and ability as we play, and our weapons will become more effective and lethal. These are the same characters (and equipment?) that we will be controlling in competitive MP. And that's the problem - to work, competitive MP requires that no player have a substantive advantage. Minor advantages, like the perks system in COD/MW or the support or tactical packages in HALO 4 aren't game breakers, but many players dislike even that departure from an even playing field. So, regardless of tweaks to compensate (like limiting types of ammo) it seems to me that one of two things will have to happen in Destiny: 1. To some degree our characters' abilities, skills, and/or weapons will be limited or unavailable in competitive MP to maintain an acceptable degree of equity. This would significantly diminish the sense of accomplishment achieved in the game proper - almost like being 'demoted' or punished for playing competitive MP - kind of like prestiging and going back to level 1 in COD/MW every time you play. Boo. 2. Our characters' abilities, skills, and weapons will be unchanged and competitive MP will include very strong and comparatively very weak players in the same match. For obvious reasons this would not result in a fun and engaged competitive MP experience, nor one that would continue to attract players, IMO. Boo. Alternatively, this won't happen and matchmaking will ensure that only similar leveled characters play together. A couple of problems there - it keeps friends who are different levels from playing together and it limits the availability of opponents which will lead to longer wait times and, possibly, latency issues due to players being located at greater distances from each other. This happens already in current FPS franchises when they release map packs as DLC. It's called 'splitting the base' because not all players (the base) buy the map packs. Those who do can't play those maps with those who don't (the split) so the pool of potential players is reduced. I'd hate to see Destiny have a split base right out of the gate. Boo. For those of you keeping track, that's three 'boos.' Not for Bungie - it's awesome to see this type of vision, ambition, creativity, and commitment. Maybe I'm genre-locked. A genre is a classic example of a box after all and I'm hoping that what I've stated above turns out to be typical box thinking - and that Bungie is on the outside. Here's hoping!

        • Bungie made Invasion. Arguably the best and worst gametype in Halo. Best because of the classes, few weapons in the map, mixture of gametypes, etc. worst because of how easy it was to spawnkill/statwhore.

        • There will be some match making I'm sure. Now if you're scared of PVP Don't play Dark Souls. If two Soul Level 125 guys fight it could still be very uneven, depending on which guy stat levels to his play style better while also getting the right Buffs and armors. Skill is important too. I hope Destiny is like that, I enjoy challenges.

          • WOW has radically different classes, races, and traits. I think PvP works in WOW because the nature of the game is not focused on pure competitiveness. The fact that we have the focus of PvE makes it so that balancing of the classes is not really the priority, and most likely people wont be too bottom-hurt about any "unfair" PvP advantages. Plus, the three classes will probably counter each other. Like: Titan > Hunter Hunter > Warlock Warlock > Titan Something like that.

            • My biggest concern is the differences in the classes and their abilities....or rather the lack of. Im worried because it appears Destiny is having trouble distinguish its gameplay between FPS games and MMOS, and while I think in most areas of gameplay this is a fantastic blend, its a hard one to perfect in a competitive sense. On one hand, you have instinctual FPS games that have little variation between players, other than their weapon of choice or armor color. Its a battle of teamwork and mechanics. MMOs however differ greatly in the class roles, allowing for players to compete within their class or as a team. It seams to me that Destiny is having a hard time finding the bridge here, and like I said, thats a tough place to be when talking about competitive multiplayer. I think Bungie needs to choose on or the other in respects to the multiplayer. Either a big difference between classes and a strong sense of specialization in the Arena, or a generic FPS instinct and mechanic based PvP. Bungie has my full faith to make something amazing, but I have my concerns.

              • I pretty sure bungie hint that there not going to be a best weapon in the game because of all the different weapons and how each one molds to the character so maybe you have a guy with red death and he dominates with it but this other guy has it and he sucks with it but kills almost any one with the first pistol does this make the first pistol the best weapon in the game no but makes the player the best weapon in the game, plus bungie defiantly going to balance or handicap/buff the weapons in multiplayer . Plus in podcast they said the real fight finding ammo

They're going to have to balance it somehow. My guess is either you're going to be playing people of a similar level or skill rating, or in PvP your levels will be somewhat equalized. I also hope that PvP can happen naturally out in the open, instead of simply selecting it from a menu. Think Dark Souls or WoW.

                      • The thing is to get ammo for your heavy and special weapons you have to find it around the map. So two people could have a duel over who gets the ammo and that makes it hard for op guys to shoot there op weapons

Someone could have the best heavy weapon in the game, but if your team controls the map well enough, they won't be able to use it. Listen to the podcast, that will explain how ammo is the new 'weapons on map'. I can't say I have no worries, but I believe this is an ingenious way of balancing the weapons out. Also (my favorite part) heavy weapons must be loaded before they can be used so you have to find ammo, beat others to it, and have time to load that ammo before you can fire any heavy off.

                            • Destiny won't play the same way as Halo that's for sure. With people using the traveler's power and already having their weapons in hand, meaning there likely won't be weapons on the map, it'll be very different. I hope there are still vehicles and objects like boxes and stuff in multiplayer. I might be asking for too much though. A custom game or forge mode would be perfect too, but then again, it's not Halo.
