Art is one of the most important subjects we have. Most students aren't going to grow up to be scientists, or even artists. But Art, even when students don't pursue an artistic career, are vital to a developing student's creativity and imagination. Science is a very cynical subject. Art is an enlightening one. What do you think?

What dazarobbo said. Additionally, I think you are overlooking the fact that science and math help develop critical thinking and reasoning skills like no other subjects. These are vitally important for not just an economically competitive individual, but a well-rounded one. I am not going to become a novelist as a professional, but it does not mean that I should not learn how to write well.

dazarobboにより編集済み: 3/8/2013 3:00:24 PMGiven how technologically-dependent society is becoming (especially in terms of ubiquitous computing), I would think the answer would be kind of obvious. For more specific examples (mostly related to computing since that's my area of expertise): - Cars being manufactured today are using of A LOT of integrated computing systems, which is making it difficult for current mechanics to diagnose problems with cars and knowing how to fix them. - Take a stroll through your house and count how many things there are which use computing technology. Your phone, desktop computer, laptop, microwave, washing machine, refrigerator, dryer, etc... The numbers will increase. Who will be able to design and fix these? What about positions which require knowledge of how to use technology like this? HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN A SCHOOL TEACHER TRY AND FAIL MISERABLY TO SIMPLY TURN A TV ON AND PLAY A DVD?!? - Businesses are moving toward "paperless offices". High school graduates who work in these places are going to need the skills to almost exclusively work at a computer. - In Information Technology and Computer Science related disciples, there is a MASSIVE shortage of graduates with the necessary skills to fill positions. Don't believe me? Take a look at the most in-demand jobs at the moment. This trend has been continuing for a while now too. Like most other, more specific areas, if students are curious about art they should be encouraged to take the class(es) as electives. But with the application of scientific-domains becoming increasingly prevalent, science (and especially IT) needs to remain a core study. Art has little place in any of this.

Art classes were required throughout high school for me. I happened to be in band, so I would've taken that anyway (I used to be pretty incredible on an alto sax, I swear) but we did all have to take those classes. In elementary and middle school, we had to take both music and art.

Art is typically the first to be cut funding wise, likely why its elective, but i agree with you, the educational board, adn multiple research projects have shown the massive significance art classes can have on many skills a students needs to be proficient in.

Also, science is an incredibly creative field, and not just at high levels. If science students aren't exercising their creativity in class, there's a problem with the curriculum.

Enough of the binary definitions everyone. There isn't a 'Science' and an 'Art', there is a complete world full of complex crossovers where it would be much more accurate to describe it as a spectrum - but indeed that would be too simple a description because of the complex linkages. In reality a well rounded education requires both, and that is what is required at not just a high school level, but for everyone - a well rounded education. I would also contest your assertion that Science is a cynical subject, there can be great imagery or wonder from science. Further, you've completely managed to disregard the social sciences in this where the value of visual, description, human emotion, human performance, speech, text etc are taken very seriously in a 'scientific' way. Hence the overlaps I was talking about.

Simple really. School is a place of education, science is the understanding of the universe and everything in it, and like muffin said, if the main driving force on the advancement of our society. Art isn't.

31 通の返信Art is fairly useless. All it does is waste time that could be better spent on something that's actually useful in the real world.

1 返信Because the scientist/engineer is more important/valuable than the artist to society.

1 返信Its art. Its a joke. We should force kids to take PE more than they have to now. PE is alot more important than art or music classes.
