The Cosmic Horror Story is used to describe the works of H.P Lovecraft and others who write in this genre. Explaining the Cosmic Horror Story is a bit of a task in short as the man himself once said; "Now all my tales are based on the fundamental premise that common human laws and interests and emotions have no validity or significance in the vast cosmos-at-large."-H.P.Lovecraft. In large; “The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island in the midst of black seas of infinity and it was not meant that we should voyage far. Some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. Theosophists have guessed at the awesome grandeur of the cosmic cycle wherein our world and human race form transient incidents. H.P Lovecraft, "Call of Cthulhu" This is essentially Destiny’s premise, one day most of humanity was just destroyed, and we are entirely clueless on how that happened. In short I believe Destiny to take place in a Lovecraftian universe, but not one of the imagining of a man stuck in the 1920’s, but that of a time and place where man truly believes we are invulnerable, that we have sought out manifest destiny with in our own Solar System. We are on the verge of going from a Type-1 civilization to a Type-2 ( currently we are still a Type-0 civilization, for reference.) And at the apex of our power we are nearly whipped out form existence. Something beyond our fathoming in one fell swoop just walked by and nearly ended us. It would have succeeded had it not been for the Traveler. If that’s not a horror story I don’t know what is. So lets take a look at Bungie’s Destiny and compare that to Lovecrafian fiction, both past and present , and see if we can’t discern something from the small window we’ve been allowed to look upon.
