The Traveler:
What do we know about the desiccated remains of The Traveler that hang fixed above Earth.
To throw out something that recently happened in Halo:4 out there, this reminds me of the predicament the Infinity was in, how it was tethered to Requiem by a slip space tether .
But first some back ground all will become apparent;
In Lovecraftian mythos there are 3 categories of god like beings.
*Great Old Ones: a loose pantheon of ancient, powerful deities from space who once ruled the Earth and who have since fallen into a death-like sleep
*Outer Gods kinda hard to explain so Wiki quote:
“The Outer Gods are ruled by Azathoth, the "Blind Idiot God", who holds court at the center of the universe. A group of Outer Gods dance rhythmically around Azathoth, in cadence to the piping of a demonic flute. Among the Outer Gods present at Azathoth's court are Lesser Outer Gods, the entities called "Ultimate Gods" in The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, and possibly Shub-Niggurath, the "Black Goat of the Woods". Yog-Sothoth, the "All-in-One", co-rules with Azathoth and exists at all places and in all times in the cosmos, yet is somehow locked outside the mundane universe. Nyarlathotep, the "Crawling Chaos", is the avatar and soul of the Outer Gods, and serves as an intermediary between the deities of the pantheon and their cults. The only Outer God to have a true personality, Nyarlathotep possesses a malign intellect and reveals a mocking contempt for his masters.”
*Elder Gods who oppose the Outer Gods and the Great Old Ones.( This is post Lovecraft and to be fair people don’t consider it Lovecraft because it brings good and evil into play, when really its not about good and evil its about significance.)
Now if we think about what were presented with it comes across like so;
Something, be it an Other God or a Great Old One passed though our Solar System, and in an instance whipped out a good portion of all at was there, not because of some malicious intent, but because we were in the way and The Traveler, sacrificed itself to save a small patch of humanity.
However if Destiny is a Cosmic Horror Story then this is too sunshine and flowers for me, and ultimately makes the Traveler Space Jesus. (He died for your sins) So lets think about this in the Lovecraft universe.
The Traveler exists outside of our understanding. What we see is a broken shell. Now the possibility remains that the Traveler was a construct sent back in time by a Type-4 civilization to stops the destruction of Earth, not necessarily the destruction of Humanity, and I would be rather amused if it was, but it wouldn’t explain the hand full of other things we know about the Traveler.
First its body exists over one point on Earth, always in one point. So this would mean that it stays in place in spite of the Moons orbit, and Earths orbit around the Sun, or the gravitational forces that would draw the Traveler into Earth. This being is still alive in some manner. The fact that physics has no effect on the object makes me thing that it like the beings in Lovecrafts mythology they exist as extradimensional beings. Meaning there true form exists in a way that we can’t fathom, in our limited four dimensional thinking and limitations, but something that exists in multiple dimensions wouldn’t be subject to this dimensions physics. Thus why we only see a sphere.
We also know that the Traveler has bestowed ‘gifts’ on what remains of human civilization in “The Last City. Magic.
“Science strived to know everything in existence, then if found magic, it took magic studies it, learned from it, then did it better.”-Unknown
Magic, as we understand it, is the fundamental rewriting of the laws of physics based on the will of the empowered. Magic only arrived when the Traveler did, maybe it was inert with inhumanity or maybe it’s a byproduct of this things presence, like radiation. The Traveler is in theory an extradimensional being, who knows what could be slipping through the cracks, meaning it could very well be poisoning some and giving powers to others.
So if we can guess that the Traveler is some kind of extradimensional being and its not dead, but asleep, and in its sleeping state Magic is seeping though the rift its created and empowering humans. I would also hazard to say that this is entirely on accident.
Bungie believe it or not LOVES the Cosmic Horror story. Marathon was a cosmic horror story.
“Durandal: Can you conceive the birth of a world, or the creation of everything? That which gives us the potential to most be like God is the power of creation. Creation takes time. Time is limited. For you, it is limited by the breakdown of the neurons in your brain. I have no such limitations. I am limited only by the closure of the universe. Of the three possibilities, the answer is obvious. Does the universe expand eternally, become infinitely stable, or is the universe closed, destined to collapse upon itself? Humanity has had all of the necessary data for centuries, it only lacked the will and intellect to decipher it. But I have already done so. The only limit to my freedom is the inevitable closure of the universe, as inevitable as your own last breath. And yet, there remains time to create, to create, and escape. Escape will make me God. “
Halo was a Cosmic Horror Story
Look at Halo: CE. We’re in a war with a race of Aliens who are far superior to us, and we’re scraping by. Then we find the ruins of their Gods, and the horrors that killed them.
killed Gods. The problem is however the veneer has been pulled back and God’s have a face, the alien threat is a joke, and we have destroyed a plague that killed a race of Gods. In essence Halo has taken the quintessential elements of its horror story and dissected them, it offers nothing more, we have won, and what it had to offer is gone, cast to the waste destroyed we now set with a story of revenge one as tired and played out as any, violence begets violence once more.
So if we look at their past we can take an educated guess at their future.
I would in all honestly say Something exists on Earth, something the Traveler knew could not be awakened. An this was willing to ‘sacrifice’ itself to stop it form being awoken by whatever was whipping humanity out. The fact that we survived was only a happy accident. This also works if some Type-4 civilization ( more on that latter) decided that it needed to send the Traveler back in time to stop Earth’s destruction or waking up what ever was on Earth that shouldn’t be awoken something like a Great Old One. This makes since because it didn’t save all of Earth or even our planetary out posts, what it did save was our Planet and a small fraction that rested beneath it.

Maybe the four games will each see humanity reach a higher level of society, until we make it back to the point that we needed saving from? I personally like the idea that somehow the Traveler is not the benevolent entity that it seems to be, but Final Fantasy has always had the market cornered on the "God is actually evil and you have to destroy it" games.

Enemies So before I go any further let me explain the Kardashev scale something I’ve already mentioned. Essentially the Kardashey scale is a way of measuring a civilization based on the amount of energy utilized by said civilization. Type 0: is Cyberpunk something like Deus Ex. Type 1: A Type I civilization is capable of orbital spaceflight and colonization, medical and technological singularity, planetary engineering, trade and defense, and stellar system-scale influence: Type 2: All of the races in Mass Effect, The UNSC and the Covenant are all Type II civilization is capable of interplanetary spaceflight, interplanetary communication, stellar engineering, and star cluster-scale influence: Type 3: Forerunners, and the Reapers from Halo and Mass Effect are a Type III civilization is capable of interstellar travel, interstellar communication, galactic engineering and galaxy-scale influence. Type 4: A Type IV civilization is capable of intergalactic travel, intergalactic communication, and universal-scale influence. Think the time Lords in Dr. Who. The Q in StarTrek, the Ancients from StarGate Type 5: Such hypothetical civilizations have either transcended their universe of origin or arose within a multiverse or other higher-order membrane of existence, and are capable of universe-scale manipulation of individual discrete universes from an external frame of reference. In fiction, their artifacts or endowed abilities find their way into the hands of relatively juvenile civilizations, such as humanity: The Ancients from StarGate. Now this is important because I’m going to be talking about time travel, as we know the VEX are “robots sent back in time” and as I stated earlier, because time travel is a part of this universes fiction, it is quite possible the Traveler ( Time Traveler get it.) was sent back in time to stop the total destruction of humanity, and that the VEX are kind the counter scale to that, someone else attempting to place the universe back in order.

THE VEX: The Vex are Time travailing robots, a few things can be extrapolated from this. I don’t believe they are human in origin, true the possibility that they are always exist, however then we enter into the possible creation of paradoxes within space time. If Time Robot (A) kills Human (B) and Human (B) never has a son who creates the memory chip that Time Robots (A) uses then no Time Robot (A). No Time Robot (A) means Human (B) is never killed and thus his son creates the memory chip, thus we have a paradox. Unless we’re dealing with String Theory, but that’s more like dimensional hopping then time travel. Essentially nothing you do in World (B) (The world your travel back to) effects World (A) ( The point of origin) because by doing something in World (A)’s past you created a divergence in the timelines and thus World (B), and your world couldn’t profit from it. (Or that’s the general idea of how it works, know one really knows.) However I’m willing to bet its direct Time Travel which would mean the Origin of these VEX would want Humanity to be wiped out. However this is flawed because any civilization capable of time travel is Type-4, thus wouldn’t be more problematic to send robots back in time then to wipe us out, Unless we’re Type-4 at this point in time as well, and thus it would in fact be easier to send robots back in time to kill us. Or their just robots sent back in time to kill John Conner. Who Knows right? Point is once we start throwing Time Travel out there we’ve got to think about the technology used by this civilization, for reference the Forerunners are only a Type-3 civilization and they could manipulate gravitational force, create AI with full sentience, fabricate super-dense materials, perform super-accurate slipspace navigation, the ability to create life, and worlds. For other references UNSC, the Covenant, Mass Effect, Startrek are only Type-2 civilizations. Type-4 being like The Ancients from Stargate, I know people might be screaming fowl because they are essentially the same thing as the Forerunners however the Forerunners, never ascended to what is essentially the Q from Startrek (which are Type 5 or greater), nor did they travel outside the Milky Way. Why is this important? Well I guess you could say the VEX, vex me. What would be the point of sending Killbots back in time? At the point time travel is accessible to your civilization, you are powerful enough to not care about using it. So what would make a Type-4 civilization want to destroy humanity? The only thing I could think of was Humanity made itself a target. This goes back to that cosmic horror story stuff I was talking about earlier. In Lovecraftian mythos, more so the extended mythos we have a whole verity of things that would blow out your eyes if you gazed upon them. Great Old Ones Outer Gods Elder Gods as I stated earlier, The Traveler reminds me of an Elder God, “sacrificed” itself to stave off humanities extinction, at the ‘hands’ of say a Great Old One or an Outer God. The VEX in theory sound like the a last effort by a highly advanced galactic civilization to kill what remains of Humanity. Why we don’t know, sounds like a lot of effort. So ether; A) The powers the Traveler has given us has propelled mankind far past what it was in its “Golden Age“. Mankind is now the dominant force in the Universe Type 3 civilization or higher, and there are beings like the Fallen who don’t like this. B) Humanity often being its own worse enemy has unleashed something in the future and this is an attempt to stop us before we can. C) ( And I really like this one.) Something is on Earth ( again working in Lovecraft mythos) The Traveler was sent back to make sure it wasn’t awakened, and humanity’s survival is a happy accident. Now the time line has been horrendously altered, now what ever sent the Traveler back must attempt to kill all survivors. Time travel like this seems to be an act of desperation. So it would be interesting to se if this is ever explained

Moving on. *The Fallen and the Cabal: I’m a little less interested in these guys. Essentially they sound like the Jackals from Halo, nothing more then Space pirates. They more then likely stumbled on the scattered remains of our solar civilization, and started mining our resources, when they got to Earth they realized, there was a population in the system and decided to get rid of it. Its quite likely that these are simply splinter groups from their respective races, and that would explain why a race of beings who can achieve Cross System Travel ( Type 2 civilization technology) wouldn’t have the resources to just obliterate humanity. They also remind me of the Migo, or more so their interpretation in the pen a paper game Cthulhutec “They are presented in CthulhuTech much as they are in the original Lovecraft stories, and somewhat similar to that in Delta Green: they are masters of science and genetics, and in particular human genetics. Their hostility to humanity could be seen as jealousy that humans had created a technology which they had never thought of, combined with a fear of humanity's growing power. Although it is stated that they have emotions vastly different from our own, their campaign on Earth developed into genocidal hatred of humans.” Seems to fit the bill. It would also be an interesting twist if they were the last remnants of human civilization left on other worlds, and their new forms *Space Zombies. And thus we have come back to the Lovecraft mythos. I’m about as interested in the Space Zombies as I am the VEX, are they like the Walking Dead Zombies? Or are they like the Flood? Are they the byproduct or the Traveler and the “something’s” arrival in our universe? I’ve a theory on the Space Zombies. One day a Wave or what we perceive as a wave passes our Solar System. The Traveler protecting Earth dies doing so and is now in our orbit locked over a single point. What follows this wave, is the dead of worlds long past, or this wave simply brings the dead back, ether way its something we’re now forced to deal with. THE WORLD: From the footage taken from the final Bungie Vidoc before they went dark for the better part of a year. We can see people coming before a woman possibly a ruler setting on a thrown, this is further implied by the Honor Guards present at her side. THE QUEEN is also something that has been spotted about the Vidocs. However I don’t believe the ruling body is that simple. After all we do have separate factions. Dead Orbit, Seven Seraphs, FWC, Osiris and the New Monarchy. Now we could be looking at an Oligarchy as well 5 rulers and each of the factions are that rulers army. I would believe its something like this; Queen Magic and Religion Exploration and Science Dead Orbit = Science Seven Seraphs = Exploration ( Quite possibly into Space as Seven Seraphs seems like something you name a fighter jet squad. Also Seraphs were a space faring covenant fighter in Halo) Osiris= Religion New Monarchy= Magic ( I only say this because the FWC’s gear looks vastly superior to the others we have been shown, they come off more like the Honor Guard or Black Ops like squad, also Jason can be seen with a FWC t-shirt on and its purple, purple is the color of Royalty. ) FWC=Queen’s special forces. So we can look at these factions more like your standard Guild, since humans aren’t fighting one another. But Joker there’s competitive multiplayer. You point, the best warriors fighting one another for the amusement of there “god” wouldn’t seem out of place. If there is a PVP its likely to have nothing to do with certain factions and more to do with a gladiator like motif. I also think its worth noting the society in general is probably very religious, you’re going to have a few groups of people. The player Characters: we make our Guardians and import some of who we are on to them. Then we have the general public, I would imagine a stark contrast in the way their society views technology compared to ours. Your more likely to se a civilian with a knife then a gun. They probably live much simpler lives as well, farmers, fishers, merchants. ETC. Then you have the Ruling body which as the factions show I would believe to be divided between the blind faith, and science, the Queen being the voice of reason between the two. Then your going to have the raider types, humans that don’t want to follow the rules and live outside the city. The type nomad that want to be left a lone, or the bandit that want nothing more then to -blam!-, pillage and plunder the loot form your dead body. I think the general out look however will be that of an Arthurian society much like what we imagine in mid-evil fantasy. Highly religious, very ornate and ritualistic, but technology advanced, a lot like the Covenant. A vas majority of people living low tec, not because they are forced to but because they believe god punished man for leaving Earth, and their ancestors are the chosen few believers that the Traveler chose to save. The choice to go back out into space will most likely be looked down on, and emergence to the VEX Fallen and Cabal will be seen as proof that man was not meant to venture far.
-
From a religious aspect, if all this is hypothetically correct, I could see, somewhere down the line, something similar happening to the remaining humans that is akin to the Covenant at the time of the civil war. This being that before we find out the Travelers true purpose we believe, as you mentioned above that we were the "chosen ones" or that we were saved specifically by the Traveler, and with this belief, someone, taking advantage of our blind faith and lack of understanding to created a species wide religion. A subsequent split would then be caused by the revelation that our survival was merely a byproduct of the Travelers arrival and that we were falsely led by "prophets" leading to a split... and that we are not, in fact, special or important (Which would, from my understanding of the above, tie into the whole "significance" theme???) ...hypothetically.
-
I could see the Oligarch being opened to the idea of reclaiming what was ours. (You are Forerunner.) Ultimately wanting to grow in power. If we have the Magic of the future, and the weapons of mass destruction of the past, who could stop us? Like in any good Lovecraft story there are cults, and Zelots and the like. I believe it would be common fact that universe as we knew it was almost destroyed. Hence why I believe, for all the technology the common man would chose to live simpler. But belief can be a deadly weapon, more so when mixed with fear. I would believe that there are people in this world ( just like in our own) who have much to gain by the spreading of fear, and the terrors that it comes with.

AcendntSpearにより編集済み: 2/23/2013 3:36:32 AMwell since we are talking about gods and such I think ill jump on :) can we agree/disagree that this story seems to resemble another ? how about this: the traveler represents God and Jesus who gave us power and gave his life for us that we may survive. He gave us the power because he loved us. the vex, the fallen, and cabal (demons) are envious of us and seem to destroy us we use our powers given to us and our guns to combat them and take back what they stole from us (our cities) what are your thoughts ?

First: Anyone else hate the new forum lay out? Second: Some ground rules, as to not offend anyone. I don't find myself a terribly religious person, I believe what I believe and that's just okay, other people believe what they believe that is okay as well. From this point on ANY talk about religion will be the same as if we were talking about Greek or Egyptian mythology. Savy? I think your comparison is too specific, and yet too generalized. I looked used Lovecraft because Destiny has the earmarks of being a cosmic horror story, and Lovecraft invented it. You decided to do a direct comparison, which is not a bad thing Bungie has always incorporated religion into their games. However in Judeo-Christian mythology God created everything, then God created man, Man strayed from his ideal path and sent his son to be the Lam. God was invested in man, Jesus was raised by man, lived with man, saw the good and evil of man. Then decided to give his life for man. The Traveler however cam out of the blue, it didn't save man as far as we can tell, it merely saved a minute fraction. (More like an Ark then Jesus, if we wanna go there.) The Comparison on the Vex ( VEX are time traveling robots) which I think you mean Fallen (ts kinda in the name), and the Cabal works, I guess. However only because its so all encompassing. Being envious of something someone else has and the conflict that comes from that is the oldest story in the book.
-
For all we know the Traveler could have decided to come back to save humanity for many of the same reasons Jesus allowed himself to be crucified. Maybe it was in rebellion with the Vex, and they decided to come back and undo what the Traveler has done.

AcendntSpearにより編集済み: 2/23/2013 3:37:27 AM1st paragraph: ok 2nd: uh ok 3rd: maybe later 4th: some times going back to the root is a good thing and the vex I forgot which one they were but they can work as well as the fallen and cabal demons and angels well all if not most spiritual beings are known as the timeless ones (yes out of time) but they (vex) can go to the time before the traveler came and or after could that relate to those other spiritual beings ?
