As a Gambit enthusiast I will say that one of the most effective strategies pre-renegades has always been using a Heavy Machine Gun. The ammo economy is fantastic for both defense and invading. The key will be finding one that you like the most to use. Exotic-wise Thunderlord is great as well as Xenophage.
The next best choice is exotic rocket launchers with the kings being Ghorn, Truth, and Deathbringer. You’ll have to manage your ammo a little more but all three can remove threats or make you a large threat very quickly.
Eager edge swords are very strong but there is a skill gap to them but once mastered you can be on top of an opponent like lightning.
Snipers, scout rifles, and linear fusions I lump all together as one type as they all seem to operate to the same effectiveness. Personally, I’m inclined to use Linears as my go to Gambit heavy but that is just me.
When invading surprise is always your best advantage. Be on the move and strike quickly. Staying in one place is risky, it can be used to your advantage as your opponents will come to you but you can also be easily overwhelmed.
When you are defending against an invader always challenge as a team unless you are absolutely sure you can handle a 1v1. Invaders wipe teams that run away and try and hide. 4 v 1 is not good odds for an invader; Invaders are boogy-men ghosts and should not be feared if you have a team working together and communicating. Drop what you are doing and hunt the hunter.
I say this as Reckoner that gild Dredgen each season. Ask away if you have questions or want clarification!

Thank you, that's a lot of good information, and I love Thunderlord! My biggest takeaway, as someone more likely to be invaded than to invade, is to stick with my team. I guess I'll get in the habit of using team chat. Are you looking forward to the new activity? This seems like it's right up Gambit player's alley. I mean, I know it's not actually Gambit, but it's a lot closer than anything else we have.

When defending an invader, work as a team i.e. everyone should turn their focus on defeating the invader, but don't clump together in one spot as that makes it easier for the invader to take you all out with one or two rockets or a super. So challenge as a team but from different positions.

I should also add to the advice part of Gambit is to learn how the spawns work on maps. Take this with a grain of salt as we don’t have any idea how that will work in this new activity, but in Gambit proper you could regularly control an invader spawn by knowing where team mates were out of the handful of spawn spots. If the new activity has fixed invader spawn locations and there is a notification that one has entered the area, you and your teammates can converge and neutralize. Nothing frustrates an invader more than being killed just as they hit the field. I’ve received the hate messages and also felt the frustrations, 😂

I’m hopeful for the activity. I’ll play it before I make any real feelings known. I could see it being a lot of fun for us old gambit vets but I can see it also going south in the design is flawed in some fashion. Cautious but excited is the best way to explain it.
