I played D2 till the time we killed the Witness in one big bash. Then I continued played on and off for some seasons, also bought the latest DLC and season pass in the hope of reviving the old flame but... it didn't work out as expected.
I used to enjoy D2 with it's play style, graphics, story, dialogues, scenery etc. Best thing of all was the player base. There were enough players to give a meaningful experience to players of different styles and skills. I used to be able to go into trials long time ago, then do raids without trying to learn a new skill. I am ok with build-crafting and chasing exotics to a point when the RoI makes sense. I used to farm old raids and lost sectors for that niche exotic that gave you an edge in endgame activities.
Anyway, after almost a year of absence, I decided to give this game another try as I already had the game pass and DLC so why not?
Started the story and lost interest as soon as I finished the introduction bit. Go here, kill this, deposit that, talk to this and insert this into that... all old repetitive BS. Power level of 10 when the unlock activities were at 200+ was just a non-entertaining idea. Luckily, the power level chest helped (thanks to everyone who complained before returning players like us). Then some of my nephews found out the FOTL cheese for free gear and farmed these events to bring my characters up to 320ish level.
I tried doing the guardian ranks and managed to finish all until I hit the conquest requirements. LFG was just a hit and miss as always as no one was interested in doing old activities. Luckily found someone after a few days and finished this step off.
After almost a weekend of random chilling, I'm sitting at 340ish power level with guns that are not good/fun for the content. I have missed a lot of season (bought but never played) and don't have everything. The new gear requirements for some activities are just weird. For example, I spent a lot of time getting my Outbreak Perfected before I left the game, even carried a lot of people through it. Now that gun cannot be used in activities with champions as it's an old gear? My beloved old, maxed out exotic armour has to be replaced with new bulwark or whatever equivalent to make the builds work?
Remember, that I am a returning player with not much of new gear or build going on. So, here is the way I see it.
Every RPG'ish game has a mix of following aspects in some proportion.
- Build crafting/levelling
- Challenges/mechanics/puzzles
- Grind
- Story
- Endgame
- Rewards
D2 is failing in all of these aspects because they don't contribute to each other. Rewards barely contribute to levelling in meaningful way (how many things do you delete after an activity?) Grind is OTT. I mean, doing a 15 minute activity, just to get a power drop of 1-2 above your level and it could be a repeat or infusion material?
Story, it's not a AAA anymore. Just compare to the other games of same timeframe and D2 is probably near the lower end of rating if not the worst rating on story. The Kepler, black hole rubbish got me laughing. I haven't finished the campaign yet but this was lol and I lost interest. I am a huge Sci-Fi movie geek so I enjoy Sci-Fi but this seemed a bit lacking to engage players like me.
Long story short, I have decided to go back to entertaining games as my long time with D2 has almost come to an end. I keep giving chances to Bungie and D2 devs year after year but the I keep getting disappointed without fail. Most of my friends are gone from the game. These were friends who played with my for 3-5 years and some even longer. We had good time. I am probably the last one who is leaving and turning the lights off.
D2, which was one of my most played game is now probably going to stay in my archives. I'll let my nephews mess around in it for a while during their holidays before uninstalling it.
Here, with a heavy heart, we part ways. I tried to come back but it wasn't meant to be...
I know this post is will be ignored but I am leaving it here for my own experience with the hope that some day this game becomes the meta it used to be.
I humbly ask for forgiveness for anything that I've said or done that may have upset anyone in these forums or games.
