I just bought gamepass essential (the cheapest one), and it doesn’t work with D1.
What the actual -blam!-, bungie?

That must be a bug. I’ve only ever used the cheapest option for multiplayer. Unless different countries have different gamepass features? I know for sure that in the UK gamepass essential gives you multiplayer.
