As 90 percent of D2 players don't do grandmasters, locking all progression above 400 behind GM and Ultimate will eventually kill this game

According to publicly available information, less than 10 percent of D2 players have completed even one GM. "While there is no official Bungie figure, publicly available data suggests that only a small fraction of Destiny 2 players have ever completed a Grandmaster Nightfall, likely below 10%, with some estimates being as low as 2-6% based on Steam achievements and other tracking sites from past years." Most players are casuals who rarely, if ever, do GM's and certainly won't do Ultimate. Who at Bungie thought this was a good idea? Why should casuals continue playing when they are permanently gimped by your current progression system? The game needs other ways for players to level other than GM's and Ultimate's that don't require limited revives, locked loadouts, and playing 40 to 60 power below the enemies. Just add back the old pinnacle system (in addition to the portal) and maybe even some world drops that provide progression. Maybe if casuals could also get to 450 or even 550 without GM's and Ultimate's, they might then feel inspired to try harder content because they will be going in with better gear and more then likely more hours played because they might be having FUN instead of struggling through one sweaty activity after the other. And to those who are members of the "GET GOOD" crowd, what would be wrong with a player who just wants to do strikes and explore the open world also being able to level to max power at their own pace, playing it 'Their Way." How would this hurt the game? Hint: It won't. Or would you rather have another day with 19,000 players on Steam as we did last week? Or does Bungie want to split the player base into two groups? And why does this matter? OH, I KNOW. CASUALS PAY THE -blam!- BILLS.

  • I don't know about the statistics, but I know I'm an average player -blam!- struggles in Master level content. Before anyone says "It's a skill issue!" let me just say: It's a skill issue. I don't have the skills to do high end content, I admit that freely. I'm not saying the whole game should cater to me, but maybe that average to middling players shouldn't be pushed into content that they bounce off of. I haven't played much this month in no small part because I didn't think I could, because I don't have what it takes to do what Bungie is asking of me. I hit LL350 and I was out of my depth in a game I've played for 1,500 hours; I feel like I've hit the (Light) level of my incompetence in a game I love. In the pre-portal days I could do seasonal activities and strikes, they weren't hard, but they still offered rewards and power-ups, now that I'm out of my depth I'm left doing Solo Ops (which seem demonstrably easier than the few Fireteam Ops I've tried to do.) There's not a lot for me to do in the game because there's not a lot I [b]can[/b] do in the game. Hardcore players should have their hardcore modes, but I'm not one of them, and there really isn't a place for me, as a player, in the current setup of the game. The hardest of hardcore can do Pinnacles and GMs, but I haven't got the skills for that, and the activities I do have the skills for just aren't rewarding. Maybe some of the player attrition we're seeing are people hitting the light level of their incompetence: "Well I hit LL360 and now I'm being pushed into content that's too hard for me to compete, I'll just play something else." It's not the only problem D2 faces right now, but I do think it's [b]a[/b] problem that D2 faces right now.

  • If you don't have any interest in doing harder level things than consider max cap at 400. No point on further level if no desire for gm. You gain nothing more being higher unless you are using modifiers in gm. I am casual and rather enjoy the progression. No complaints and gives me something to work on without being maxed after 2weeks.

  • GM in EoF are not the same difficulty as GM before. Even the same delta in power, is very different in how it scales to player damage given/taken. The -25 delta that the old GM NFs had is closer to -45 would be today. In addition to whatever modifiers there are. GM now are basically just an additional player stakes, and options for mods/boons that are not available in Master. Ultimate adds to GM even. Ultimate content can be considerably easier than the old GM NF's. How you setup the mods, to synergize with your build can make it feel like a normal strike despite being GM/Ultimate content.

  • Playing strikes,solo at gm and ultimate are really not that challenging . They're not the same as a gm nightfalls.. gm and ultimate modes are just power bands..it only gets hard adding the 34 modifiers to get an A score...I would just grind through it.

    • Bungie had plenty of time to steer the ship away from the rocks. Instead they sped up and hit them at full speed. Destiny 2 is dead and Marathon will be DOA. Good riddance.

    • Honest take, it's all the same mission but with difference in modifiers. If it wasn't for having to be LL 400 for the tier loot, it wouldn't be noticeably different.

    • I don’t know, I’m not a sweat by any means, but the Grand Master seem pretty easy. Infused my level to ultimate without realizing it—now we are talking a different level of difficulty.

    • I'm not sure why you don't want to do grandmasters at 400 but if you don't want to do gm than no need to be above 400. Gm is actually more enjoyable personally. I'm casual and love gm and progression felt good and not rushed.

      • I think the devs are trying with existing content and tiering to meet the needs and the wants. They are going to have failures along the way to making the population happy. What I do know is when the casuals are gone…so goes the game. Casuals probably make the majority of the player population….when they go then there’s no one to farm in Trials, no one to match make with because you don’t have 2k clears on an activity and some -blam!- kicks you for it in LFG. And as the player population crashes so does Sony’s willingness to apply resources to new stuff in this game we love. I think this season was a miss being a grindfest clusterfuck. I got nothing out of just grinding a number up to get T5 armor. The portal also forces you to play the way that “they” want you to play leaving good old content out of the rotation. New content would be awesome. I don’t think it’s coming at a frequency that the “average” player consumes it…aka too long between updates. -blam!- and iron was hot garbage though…but everyone gets a miss every now and then. OP has a point on the community response to a post like this….its normally what it gets.

          OP: Bump++ ✅ FWIW: Here are 3x Qs this old vanilla build tortoise ponders before doing anything in Destiny… Q1: Is this activity fun? Q2: Is it worth doing re time / energy vs. loot? Q3: Why bother? (Apathy Scale) The single biggest negative factor for me is Neomuna Overtuna, ie, artificial enhanced levels of difficulty, and a ridiculous level of grind… 🧐 I’m currently near the 450 mark…most of that came from Events and Crucible…just by simply playing the game…not specifically chasing LL numbers. 🤔 Negative mods (move or explode / no revives / overwhelming hordes / -40 / etc…) in portaloo missions have absolutely zero interest. 👎 I ran a quick play Master mission with 2x MM teammates…we got it done but it sure wasn’t ‘fun’…and the loot was rubbish - did absolutely nothing to move my needle a jot. I won’t be doing that again in a hurry. 👎 There’s 60+ days left before season change…I will top 450 before then…and when I do, to the loot cave I go…[i]hey, ho! [/i]👻 That is all. Casual ‘Out’ 🫤 Ease Springs! 👈* * this 😉 Update Edit: playing crucible, hit the 450 mark, then headed straight for the loot cave, as mentioned above. Reset to Mythic level and went farming. After about 30mins, and a bunch of tier 5 weapon drops - all at 200 LL, I stopped. I did spend a fistful yo level up my favourite new toy - Givers B. Thereafter, I gave it a spin in crucible - and was delighted that tier 5 loot was dropping at 400 - 450! TLDR: hit 450 go straight to crucible! 🖖 Cheers! 👻

          • In PvE this has less to do with get good, than learning build crafting. At lot of people are held back unnecessarily just because they don’t know how to play the game. There is nothing complicated nor elitist about build crafting and it is the best way to enjoy more of the game.

              • The difficulty level for the power grind to 200-550 is entirely flat. You can set modifiers such that you rarely have any spike in power delta the entire way through rarely have to put on more than a couple negative modifiers. Conquests do vary a bit in terms of difficulty, by in my experience they are not overly difficult so long and you take your time.

                • Hard to not let my eyes glaze over when I read a post claiming [i]X percent of people[/i]… knowing that number is clearly fabricated (and likely exaggerated) to underscore the author’s point. To that point - more than ten percent of the population has engaged with GM content. Also, the current GM level is not the same as Grandmasters were prior to Edge of Fate. We are now able to level up to meet this threshold, making “GM” content akin to standard difficulty. I swear, like 96% of the posts in here exaggerate to get clicks… 😏

                    The quote reads like the AI response if you google it. Nightfalls are a thing of the past, try appending "-nightfall" next time and you'll see the AI response is gone ^^ [edit] and with it the made up numbers of course.
