Vaguely related... I've always wanted a les paul; really nice instrument + Fender tele - those 2 would satisfy my guitar collection perfectly!!

Primarily, I'm in the heavy metal world, and lead guitar is my main strength... jackson sl4 and ibanez rg570 are great to play, but they are nasty to re-tune on the fly! So each can cover tuning options! I also have an epiphone flying v and a jackson ps2, which I would look to replace. However, my crown and glory is a prs studio 11... not necessarily catered to the metal world, but it is an outstanding instrument - playability, intonation, sustain and tone are remarkable! I'd love a tele for the crisper clean tones and a les paul for the solid rhythm.

Well, there will be many required to suit many a purpose!! But, don't ignore that different guitars will play differently. Personally speaking, I have the following guitars, which are all different to each other 6-string acoustic 12-string acoustic 6-string electro acoustic 6-string electric 5-string bass But then again, I have 5 6-string electrics. One is a jack of all trades instrument which can easily be set up for most things. Two are more lead guitar focused, and tuned differently to each other. Then, two are rhythm based and also tuned differently.
