I was just trying to find a term for when people have an opinion but refuse to just have that opinion themselves and have to either make up groups or use existing groups they have no possible working knowledge of ("casuals", "the majority", etc) to give their opinion instead of just having a personal opinion on something. If you know one, please let me know lol.

While more commonly used to describe the malignant behavior of [i]blame shifting[/i] (ascribing one’s own negative feelings/behaviors onto others to avoid acknowledging one’s own faults), the term [b]projection[/b] also encompasses the behavior of which you speak, namely claiming without evidence that one’s own opinion is that of the consensus in order to avoid having to defend said opinion through reasoned argumentation (“why would I bother arguing with you about something everybody knows to be true?”).
