crucible private match giving rank and gear
i just did a couple private match with a friend and when It finished I noticed that I had gained rank and in our second match got a weapon and during the match completed a seasonal challenge

That's correct, private matches now give rewards, ranking points and count towards seasonal challenges. There are some things they do not count towards - medals earned during the mode to not count towards related triumphs. But otherwise, yes this is all intentional.
