In Comp, you match by rank. The idea is for the ranks to represent skill in some way — not every player is supposed to climb to the highest rank. If you want to climb higher, you need to carry more matches (the best players regularly do that).
In Trials, it’s more random and luck plays a bigger role, but the same principle applies — the more matches you can carry, the better your odds of Flawless are. However, you can also go Flawless through pure luck.

Is comp really trying to match by rank first now? There was so much pvp news I can't remember what was said about it. Seems pretty obvious that countdown will go eventually so I'm basically waiting to see what gets offered next.

Some matches I get matched by rank, others, that’s entirely not the case lol. It’s why I made this post. I’ve been gold or plat matching ascendant or adept. I’ve had matches where I’ve been placed against players well below my ranking. The system is not full proof. Feeling like I have to carry or sweat every single game is just not a good experience. (This isn’t me saying I’m an amazing player that carries all the time) it just doesn’t feel balanced to me. As for trials….yeah lol!

Low player population means they have to search beyond your rank more frequently. Bungie stated that you can match up to just over 1 major rank above or below. From the matches I’ve looked at, it’s more like up to 2 major ranks above or below. I’m in Adept and I see lots of Gold players (some appear to have been 2 major ranks below), but I never match below Gold unless it’s a fireteam (fireteams appear to match by the highest ranked player in that team). SBMM can also kick in to prevent players dropping too far down the ranks in order to get easier matches, so that can also affect things. I would love the matchmaking to be more strict, but I just don’t think the player population can deliver that. When TFS drops, hopefully it’ll be a bit better than it is currently.

Depends where your placement matches land you. Bungie stated that you can match with up to just over 1 major rank above or below (in my experience, it seems to be more like up to 2 major ranks above or below). Basically, if you’re in Silver, you shouldn’t match higher than Platinum. If you’re in Gold, you shouldn’t match higher than Adept. If you’re in Platinum, you can match with Ascendant. If you play in a fireteam, it seems to match by the highest ranked player in your team.

The bit about you need to carry most matches, I don’t think that’s true. I carried, I got carried and also had even contribution matches on the way to ascendant this season. What a lot of people lack these days is the commitment, perseverance and tenacity to make it there. Just my opinion of course.

I wrote “more” matches, not “most”. The OP’s comment suggested to me they are relying too heavily on teammates. Like you say, sometimes we carry, sometimes we get carried, sometimes everyone pulls their weight. The more skilled you are, or the better you perform, the more chance you have of carrying your team to victory. That can make the difference between climbing up a rank, or staying in the current one.

Unstoppable_Screebにより編集済み: 3/31/2024 11:35:01 AMConsidering there’s a maximum rank you can achieve after placements, it’s not rocket science to figure out that yeah, you’ll be up against anyone else who’s reached that placement rank 🤦♂️ I made ascendant solo, anything else on here that I read is just excuses from people, like yourself. Edit; I’m also 42 this year

SurvivingVisionにより編集済み: 3/31/2024 1:26:17 PMYou had some wayyy lucky matchmaking then. And you’re pretty stubborn to think that our experience is just excuses. I’ve played Destiny for years, and PvP is super bad right now, even worse than when recluse and mountaintop ruled the scene. People shouldn’t just be able to pick up the latest “meta” and cream a well seasoned team. That’s part of why this is an issue. Give a busted roll on an auto rifle to a sub-par player in this meta and they can beat even the best players. It makes no sense; there’s no “skill” involved. Then, as they climb the ladder it gives the player a false ego boost that affects others who have worked hard to get there. I’ve watched many content creators express the same thing. IFrostbolt literally said something similar last weekend. Too much is just unexplainable 😂 However, congratulations on hitting your rank!
