Eris Morn and the Drifter sat together on a hard stone bench in the otherwise empty hall. Eris sat stiffly on the rough surface, while the Drifter slouched beside her against his own part of the bench, having made himself comfortable- or as comfortable as he could be.
Eris had knocked on the door of Zavala's office earlier that day, requesting to speak with the Vanguard. Ikora had answered the door and asked her to sit in the 'waiting room', which was really just a small hallway outside the large metal doors. The Drifter, however, was not intending to meet with the Vanguard. He explained to Eris that he was just passing through when he had happened to spot her and wished to keep her company.
Eris shifted again, not fully sitting back in the seat which seemed impossible to to find comfort in. But even from Eris's forward position on her side of the bench she could still see the Drifter out from the corner of her soulfire eyes. She noticed how time and time again the Drifter's gaze fell across her face. She was sure he was not aware that she could see him, giving her the element of surprise.
"Drifter," Eris finally said, breaking the long silence.
"Yeah?" Came the reply, his eyes already on Eris.
Eris turned to better face the Drifter, her eyes piercing through him. "Why is it that you continuously revert your eyes to me?"
"What? Uh..." the Drifter shuffled nervously in his seat, no longer meeting Eris's probing stare.
"I have seen you, many times. Your eyes keep returning to me. Why?" Eris leaned closer, her gaze remaining just as penetrating and glued to the Drifter's face.
He cleared his throat awkwardly. "Yeah, I, uh... I can see how that's creepy. Don't worry, Eris, I'll cut it out."
"That does not answer my question." Eris remarked. "I did not ask for you to stop, nor did I mention thinking you were being 'creepy'. I merely asked a question."
A silent second passed.
The Drifter finally met Eris's burning green eyes as she reached out a hand, her fingers brushing his chin. She watched the Drifter's body tremble ever so slightly as he allowed her gentle touch to tilt his head so that he would better face her.
"Why?" She asked again.
The Drifter's cool blue eyes stared into the determined green, his lips parting to whisper his answer as he leaned closer to Eris.
"I get the feeling you already know, Moonlight..."
A soft smile tugged the corners of Eris's lips as she allowed her eyelids to sink, leaving a mere sliver of glowing green behind. The Drifter took a second to admire Eris. To admire the courage of the woman who had become his closest friend in the world. The woman who was becoming far more than a friend. The Drifter's mouth curved into a smile as he shut his eyes and leaned in a little closer.
But just as their lips were about to meet they heard the sound of an opening door. In response they jerked away from one another, hoping their expressions didn't look too guilty as the sound of footsteps followed.
The figure walking out from the doorway was the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora Rey. Her face was stern and her eyes were dark as her gaze penetrated both figures on the bench.
"Eris Morn," she finally addressed, her lips forming into a stiff smile. "The Vanguard is ready to hear you."
Eris stood from the hard chair, attempting to look confident as she said, "Yes, of course. Thank you Ikora."
Ikora began to turn, a glint of suspicion shining in her eyes as she led Eris from the waiting hall.
Once Ikora's back was turned, Eris allowed her gaze to meet the Drifter's once again, a small smile on her face. The Drifter returned the expression, finally beginning to regain himself after their untimely interruption.
Eris quickly turned back to follow Ikora before she could look behind and catch their glances. The large doors shut firmly behind them with a clang.
The Drifter, now alone, smirked to himself as he leaned against the bench once again, his mind drawing him back to the moment Eris and he had nearly shared.
He intended to complete it soon.
