Yes, it is a little confusing when they introduce Checkmate and then use a diluted version of it to tune the Crucible, but they did communicate what they were doing, multiple times.

TWID (9th Nov 2023):
To be transparent, Checkmate has revealed and highlighted a community desire for a refined sandbox in the Crucible. We eventually want to take some of those lessons learned and apply them to the base Crucible experience, not just as a Labs mode. We’re not ready to slap Checkmate onto everything just yet, but we are ready to expose the modifier to a larger audience and gather more feedback and data.
TWID (7th Dec 2023):
We have no plans to turn Checkmate on across all of Crucible. Instead, we’re aiming for a midway point for ability cooldowns and weapon cooldowns that doesn’t result in specific weapons dominating.
Destiny2Team (9th Jan 2024):
While it is not our intention to make the original Checkmate into the core PvP experience, we are experimenting with the current iteration of Checkmate to gather data, lessons, and feedback we can use to eventually tune the base PvP sandbox.
1 返信Some people have trouble retaining nuanced information, only remembering sets of buzzwords they pick out to create a summary they’re comfortable with. Certain others get all their information second hand, then turn around and spread bad info without bothering to check its veracity. The result is a barrage of claims that don’t hold up under even passing scrutiny. (΄◉◞౪◟◉`)

3 通の返信Seems to me that Bungie saying “We have no plans to turn Checkmate on across the Crucible”resulted in a mixed message and a lot of misunderstanding. Particularly when it appears that they did fully intend to use some data and features from Checkmate to tune the Crucible experience. It’s not lying, but it does cause some confusion and can create arguments among the playerbase. I sometimes wonder if that’s the intention as Bungie giving out mixed/open to interpretation statements has been a thing since the early days of D1.

4 通の返信That's literally the essence of what checkmate is. If only bungie wouldn't lie to us or have puerile "fans" or likely bungie employees run dishonest defence for them here.... The laboring masses aren't stupid.

1 返信Why would I wait for the changes to be implemented and see if I have fun when I can be outraged now

1 返信It's hilarious that people are downvoting you for copy & pasting exactly what was said lol

1 返信But no one reads the TWiD, they only regurgitate what their favorite streamers complain about on YouTube.

3 通の返信Ok. But it does say it's basically checkmate "lite" and have full intentions to lose the "lite" later on. I don't personally care because I'm a trashcan no matter what they do, but I can tell you that the fun that I do have is trying to catch people off guard with a shotgun and try for fun lightning nade kills. Them wiping all of crucible down with limited special and slower cool downs on abilities just kind of sucks for a space magic non MLG game. I think that's what a lot of people are unhappy with. It's a reminder of Y3 D1 and Luke Smiths Vanilla dream that a lot of people disliked. It's great for people who care about playing tactfully and want the game to be more competitive. That, however, makes it a lot less fun for those who don't. They can't please everyone, and that's fine.

7 通の返信Someone who actually reads what they post. You’re correct that they didn’t lie. They’ve clearly stated what their intent was and it’s coming March 5th. They’re putting the kibosh on cheese.
