New Player experience

I recently, in relativity to most of the community, started Destiny 2 about 9 months ago. I would like to show some feedback with this to help both community and developers have some insight to the new player experience. My background with video games is not in first person shooters, but I do find myself drawn to mmo's playing gw2, ff14, and dabbling in wow. My intro class being Titan and starting was slightly before Lightfall dropped, I believe about 3 weeks before. I struggled quite a bit. Having no exotic armor and only Riskrunner as a exotic weapon but Riskrunner isn't anything to write home about, but the biggest trouble I had funny enough is I didn't know about infusing gear at all. Over my first two weeks I sludged threw content at low light level and I deleted some items I would of kept over light level. [b]-tldr Low stats, no exotics, lack of knowledge about infusing make the game brutally hard.[/b] Mid-experience Lightfall drops I've purchased the expansions at this point, all but 30th anniversary. hefty intro price even at discount but back to gameplay. nearly light level capped, some exotics. Finished the Lightfall expansion on my Hunter and Titan. No real direction on where to go from here, my foundation of game knowledge is rocky. I essentially knew that doing the seasonal activity would get me engrams to spam for better gear rolls. I had no idea that dungeons/raids dropped unique exotics or that master content gave special gear, aka artifice gear. I knew guns could be crafted but none really seemed to stand out, maybe a victim of the time, early Lightfall before season of the deep crafting weapon choices were meh. [b]-tldr game doesn't show any advancements, which in turn doesn't create a desire to run content. for months I didn't understand why run dungeons or raids when I can get engrams from seasonal activities [/b] I had plans for a third part but it doesn't add anything to the post. thank you for reading.

  • Don't worry, they'll guide you to eververse.. But yeah, new player experience had always been an issue. Problem is I'm not sure of how many new players pick up the game now.

    • You have to find a veteran and have them help you. It’s the only way to level up fast.

    • Also, try to find a clan with some other newer players and just ask for help, do some stuff togheter, it's more fun togheter. I was a solo player for most of the early D2 years however the game was much more relaxed and not cluttered with all these entangled stories, sunset campaigns and you name it. I guarantee if you get into D2 or got into D2 recently don't try to speedrun all the content it'll make the game very boring very fast you're gonna be running a meta build for most of it and there's no way to catch up or get what the older players have anyway. There's alotta guns you simply can't obtain right now through easy means. And you don't need to. Only the newer guns matter, Bungie makes sure they make the guns better each season so we want to grind for them. Sure, there are some older weapons who still stand out but most of it is garbage now.

      First TL:DR (Thanks for adding tldr's) I disagree with . Yes it's alot to take in but it's all simple, can be looked up on google and it's all just brightly colored items nice and big no complicated things. If you wanna struggle for real there play Baldurs Gate 3 or Path of Exile and then come back to me and say D2 is confusing. It's so simple, filled with aim assist, you can only carry a few items, most of it is garbage. Infusing? Select the weapon, infuse a bad 1810 weapon in it and ur good. NOW for the second TL;DR I whole heartedly agree and I also wanna add sufficient laughter directed at Bungie for being absolute clowns with this game for the most time. Blatant cheating in PvP wether it be netlimiting, ximming or cronus or outright hacking has been always rampant ruining the experience of others, good and bad players we all suffer vs cheaters. PvE is boring, Adept weapons are barely any better than normal weapons, they are argueably worse than crafted weapons imo. Nightfall loot is boring, recycled garbage. Oh look another exotic armor piece with crap stats. Oh look the same Adept gun. You can't play whatever you want, it's whatever Bungie decides its gonna be that week My little brother got Destiny 2 and I was excited to get someone else addicted but he got forcibly loaded into Dares of Eternity on opening the game for the first time and literally said "WTF is this -blam!-" as he was dying over and over by majors and bosses. He never played again. Bungie promised they would use silver income for events in the future ; they have done none of that bs, in fact, they have removed the valentines event, made the guardian games one alot less interesting and more boring with less cool buffs, they made the halloween event alot more boring and the list goes on. We had cool custom ornament sets for trials and IB which are no longer obtainable some of the best looking armor in the game and it's gone forever. They sunset the forge weapons. They sunset most of the campaigns. The story is all chopped up to a point it might look like to a new player we're just warmongers who slaughter alien races juiced up on light. It's all boring and The Final Shape is gonna be in the shape of a big middle finger to all of us like they have always done. 0 communication with the forums or subreddit. 0 response. Only their agenda Shoving their political views down my throat all the while continiously reskinning weapons. They even trolled us with one of the more recent event guns "Something New" which was like the 6th reskin of that gun model. It's a joke to them, Sony knows this, and I hope they can salvage some stuff for final shape. They have been using Eververse revenue for anything BUT events, bringing back point of the stag or making a kinetic scout for IB strand doesn't mean that's a new gun. But they gotta drip feed us garbage in between expansions so we will all run to the steam shop while drooling

    • Sadly, the new player experience for Destiny is one of the worst I've ever seen. Unless you have a buddy who's been playing since Day 1, you're only going to get the bear minimum when it comes to explanations. I've played open world games where you're literally told you can go wherever and do whatever you want ten minutes after starting that handle the new player experience better than Destiny.

      This is a very good explanation as to how bad the player integration experience is. Speaking as someone who has boomeranged back to the game periodically I can add to this. The new light quests need a revamp: They ration out the pieces required to make a build of a given element far too slowly, and at the same time fail to explain build synergy. I don't think I fully understand how a synergistic build works even now. It's not very fun, either. I had a friend out grinding cosmodrome for ages before he could do anything else, and the missions for new light also glitched more than once forcing a repeat. PVE beyond the campaign is a black box with no on-ramp from the campaign,no stated incentives, no way to find parties,, and from my small experience trying them (and sucking at it), the dungeons introduce unique mechanics that are not exactly obvious coming from other franchises. And the prompts on "how" are not forthcoming, at least in spire. They have recently introduced synopsis arcs to catch you up on story, with monte carlo at the end. This is a good start, I suppose. I honestly think the scenario developers should be assigned a 2 month sabbatical to play FFXIV, which is the gold standard for wholistic integration of broader game elements. also: permadeath is stupid. If people who like legend difficulty are attached to it, fine with me, but there should be a second tier between normal and legend that is "legend without permadeath" I'd also like to point out this forum also follows in the footsteps of inaccessibility. I have yet to find a means to search topics. Searching on the bar at the top of this page brings up clans and player profiles only.

    • This is actually a very good place to start (they may have already started) when it comes to making a welcoming extravaganza for new players. Eventually new players should be welcomed like its an extravaganza with instructions. When I came back to playing after 7 months and just that amount of the game was sitting in front of me I remember thinking I have no idea how people start this game at this point in its lifespan.

    • This is a really good point. Looking back on it, they definitely don’t show you how to do much. I now compare it to other games I have played recently. The amount of info/ and walkthroughs most games give in their opening hour or so, is quite a lot, compared to Destiny 2.

    • Very interesting read and I do feel like there is a lack of information on things, almost like they expect you to already know this stuff, could definitely use a glossary or something in game to kind of describe the different things in the game, I know if you look through collections they'll tell you the source of the item and activities will tell you the rewards tied to them. All in all the telling of information could be improved in ways, especially for newer players.

      • It is confusing and their lack of built in guides etc. shows they aren't friendly to new players. That stifles the game play big time. The other issue is not being able to show some one what your Quest tasks are, except by reading them to someone. So if a friend needed help with some quest line, I can't see the exact wording, can't see what lights up on the players map, nothing! Yes there are guides out there, but sometimes the steps require collecting materials or kills of certain things in specific areas. Frankly Bungle has done a very poor job at making the game inclusive and supportive.

      • Ponying up for the game was mistake #1 especially without looking into what you’re buying. Mistake #2 was insulting riskrunner. That gun can literally do it all and you can self proc arc conductor as titan and warlock idk about hunter but assassins cowl and liar handshake exist so who cares. I’ve stomped gm’ raids master dungeons all with good ol shocky shocky bang bang. Especially useful against crappy moths -blam!-.

I agree Bungie did a Piss Poor Job of bringing in New Players. They wanted to cap on New Players, but it just bit them in the Butt. IMHO they tried to Re-boot at ShadowKeep, failure that was, and they "Tried" to change it, but the change was never substantial. Its like Global Agenda Free Agent. But with GAFA, they actually pointed you into a Direction with a Single Quest, and the other parts of the game you Explored. The intro was like 35 min long, but it never truly ended when you got to Dome City, it then Progress another like 2 hours without you even realizing it.

        They really -blam!- the bed on the new player experience the last few years just making it worse and worse. I’ve played through it a few times and it’s worse every time I do. I really do question who the hell is it charge of designing it Started going down hill with the removal of red war

Fallen deal arc damage very often - that's the main scenario for Riskrunner. Among other factions, Taken psions, some Hive wizards and knights also shoot arc.

        • Don't sleep on the crafted weapons. I didn't craft them for a long time. But, depending on what your running they have some good options on weapons. It's not all about DPS with them. But being able to go change the perks when you want really helps. End game content, for me, it's good to go put on shoot to loot for ammo and orbs. Taking a palyrma-b which comes with tracking already and added auto loading holster and lasting impression or chill clip makes a good rocket for me. You will definitely use them when you craft them. For hard content anyway

          There are a number of crafted weapons that do "stand out", however is suffers from the problem you stated. No direction or information to let you know about powerful crafted weapons. An example would be Trace Rifles. While they dont seem very good especially for your special ammo slot, their reserves & ammo pick up volume allow some Trace Rifles to replace primary weapons. The perks enhanced Lead from Gold(Hallow Denial) and enhanced Field Prep(Acasia's Dejection) eliminate their ammo econ constraints.

        • Yeah, every activity gives unique loot. Raids and dungeons usually give desirable loot, with Grandmaster nightfalls giving the most upgrade materials and chance for exotic armour, with some, not all, good loot. You need to use fireteam finder to get a team to do raids, just know they can take a while, depends.

        • I started with D1, and enjoyed the story. However, I do agree that at times it wasn't always easy to figure out what to do next. To be honest, I'm not sure I understand why Bungie doesn't offer more guidance (in game or elsewhere). And if that doesn't appeal to all Guardians, then perhaps they could have a setting in game to turn this guidance on or off. Although, Bungie has always seemed to enjoy incorporating puzzles into Destiny. So maybe they just want us to figure it out on our own. In my opinion though, it's more like Bungie has outsourced game instructions to content creators. Oh, and if you ever see the phrase "git gud", that just means go to Youtube and watch other people play the game. LOL. If that works for you, then that's great.

        • I always recommend people just play through Destiny 1 campaigns to learn the ropes of the franchise. Easier said than done if you don’t own that game, but it’s very easy to follow as you level up your subclass and light level. As for exotics, those were meant to be endgame rewards to add to builds, until they started handing them out to new lights.
