Togetherness makes it easier I would argue. Your recovery is enhanced when you're actually together. Plus taking out enemies is easier and revives are immediate. Maybe splitting up is part of your problem this week.

There are actually plenty of people offering carries for money

It is against Bungie policy to allow people to advertise paid services to play their game. Bungie has taken legal action against some of these so called "companies" that offer paid services and won. Also it soon goes to not just paid carries but account recoveries with all the mess that giving strangers access to your account... Bungie now has reached a point where if caught allowing a recovery it is a ban offence as a deterrent. Also if want to pay someone to play with you then you have more money than common sense. As for Trials.... Trials was created as a hard core pvp mode to challenge the best pvp players in the game. It was created for the "sweaties" so if you want to play in their playground then you need to play at their level. If you pay someone for it then you didn't earn anything and soil the prestige of owning Trials items.
