The Difficulty Spike Has Killed D2 For Me

When I heard the plan to "bring the challenge back," I was cautious, but remained hopeful. I'm someone who plays games to relax and unwind after a hard day at work. Put on a podcast or a classic MST3K in the background, and just chill. Run some patrols, complete some bounties, bang out a seasonal activity or a strike, maybe even grab a Nightfall here and there. Maybe it's me, but I don't understand the mentality of those who feel an almost masochistic sense that a game should absolutely wreck them. Dying sucks, losing sucks, and punishing difficulty just feels like a chore. I don't feel a sense of triumph when I overcome an obscenely difficult game, I feel like I've just finished a painful medical procedure (which isn't entirely fair; the medical procedure will at least accomplish something). During Season of the Seraph, I soloed my first exotic mission, complete the Wish Ender exotic quest (yes, it sat in my quest log since Forsaken), and got the catalysts for half a dozen weapons. I felt triumphant. I looked forward to each daily reset and accomplishing so much more. Now, I feel a sense of dread just looking at the game. I saw the wipe screen more times than ever during my initial playthrough of the campaign. I can't run the exotic mission without help, and the one time I tried it on legendary was a massacre (my Fireteam mates abandoned me at the first encounter when they saw how far south things were going). The Nightfalls are brutal, and the weapon drop rates are pathetic. I go to Neomuna maybe 2 or 3 times a week, because I just end up dying so frequently. I want to complete the Legendary Campaign so I can get some cool loot, but Calus killed me at least a dozen times on normal, and I can only imagine how brutal he'll be this time around. I get that there are people out there who want to be challenged, but they had Raids, Grandmaster Nightfalls, Trials of Osiris, etc. Did they really need more? And for the community, here's a fun drinking game: take a shot for every reply to this post that falls under the 'git gud' meme.

  • Bungie is collecting feedback EXCLUSIVELY from hardcore players. (streamers who constantly complain about things that work against their own interests) Streamers play the game 24/7 and get paid doing so. They are a source of advertisement for Bungie. Therefore they see the quick $ pulling in new players when their free advertisors are happy with the game. Their behavior is horrible for the long term success and player numbers tho. Players will check the game out but they won't stay because even complete noobs will soon realize how shallow, uninspired, grindy and lackluster the game is nowadays. Current dev team working on D2 just has zero passion for the game atleast it really feels like it. Bungie needs to start catering to the vast majority of players instead of desperately trying to satisfy the 0,1 % of neckbeards who live and breathe the game.
