How to improve player attitudes about bug/glitch fixes

My Twitter feed is filled with people unhappy that a more recent Eager Edge bug was fixed before the Duality bug that makes it frustrating to even attempt. The most frequent comment I see is something along the lines of "Bungie can quickly fix the things that are fun that we don't want fixed, but they take forever to fix the things we want fixed." I don't believe Bungie does this intentionally. I understand that some fixes are easy while others are complicated. But player perception matters. A bug that makes a pve activity easier than planned should not be fixed before bug that makes an activity unplayable. I would suggest that Bungie tie implementation of fun bug fixes with an unfun bug fix. So, even if a fun bug can be quickly fixed, it won't until the unfun bug is fixed. So, let's pretend Gally has a glitch where anyone in your pve fireteam gets wolfpack rounds as long as a member has it equipped, even you don't fire it and they are on the opposite side of the room. At the same time, a glitch emerges that makes it where the boss damage phase in the new dungeon won't trigger reliability. It turns out you can fix the Gally glitch right away...but you won't. Instead, you will announce in the next TWAB, "The team has determined the cause of the Gally wolfpack glitch. However, we have not figured out how to fix the dungeon boss damage phase glitch. We will hold off on the Gally fix until we have figured out the dungeon fix. Happy hunting Gaurdians!" Now your players are appreciative that you are letting them keep something fun longer, and they believe your priorities are in line with theirs.

  • Can we just delete the warlock and get it over with? They’re slowing working on that.

  • Bungie just needs a public relations department. And if they do already have one, they need a better one.

    • Or players could stop being dumb and stop crying when a completely understandable bug was fixed unrelated to the Duality bug at all. By all means, complain that duality isn’t fixed. It’s been months and it was a paid for DLC. Eager Edge was broken and you’re not entitled to skip entire parts of raids because you think it’s fun to skip content you paid for while complaining you can’t flawless because it’s content you paid for…

      • Bungie is so confused. They said the reason they needed eager edge was to stop people from skipping encounters. This is simply not true. Double eager edge didn’t let you do this but well skating and shatter skating does(which still hasn’t been touched btw). In reality they probably have a list of known bugs that they prioritize and schedule into fixes. To play devils advocate, fixing eager edge is much simpler than fixing duality

      • The one time I tried it, I died in a sort of parkour part (you shoot bells and go to a different room and repeat) and was trapped in an (as far as ik) inescapable room..

      • Okay but in their defense Witch Queen came out what? A year ago.... folks just started team killing with Eager Edge. At least that’s what I assume the fix was about. Also that TWAB is pretty bad. “We added more Champions” ??? What ??? We hate Champions and their gatekeepy mechanics. Literally forum full of folks complaining constantly FOR A YEAR NOW about how bad Champions are and Bungie is lazily putting them everywhere??? “No” - dmg, not listening to The Community.

        • In the law, there is a saying that goes: "Bend the law, but never break it" If we make an analogy, eager edge was not a bug, it was working as intended. The thing is, the community ingenuity bypass any and all ideas that Bongio can come up with, using the elements they gave us in more creative ways than they thought of. In short...Bongai does bot like the players to outsmart them and to cover up for their short sight and not admitting that they are idiots, they label those details as bugs and fixes. Also, based on binguu's record, they do not know how to balance, just utter annihilation of perks/items etc etc...

        • That's because this was never a bug. Bungie is blatantly lying when they call the eager edge nerf a bug fix.

Anyone that says “they had time to fix X but can’t fix Y” is just ignorant. Plain and simple. Somethings are a quick and easy fix. Other things aren’t. This isn’t exclusive to Bungie either. Same concept applies to most things in life. Tbh I don’t think they need to patronize ignorant people Anyone ignorant enough to say those things isn’t going to care or understand it even if it’s spelled out to them.

          • Eager edge was not only fixed to prevent team killing in activities but because it could be used in some game types of pvp to basically cheese actually playing, mainly rift which they clearly want to make a regular gametype but can’t with such a cheese. So it’s not a fun glitch, it was a bad glitch that needed to be fixed. Just because it harms speedrunners, who shouldn’t be catered to, doesn’t mean it’s removal is bad. And it particularly means that people complaining aren’t making valid complaints. But the hart of the actual issue is that people are just dumb. Eager edge took them a while to figure out how to deal with, after all it’s been being used that way since it was added. Duality is a harder bug and is going to take time to fix, and it isn’t really that prevalent. It basically only effects solo runs because they take a long time and the bell killing glitch seems to only actually be common if you’re in the activity for a long time. That means something strange is happening and because it doesn’t happen to everyone it’s something that’s harder to identify to fix. It also didn’t used to happen so something like last season cause long runs to have bells start killing players instead of moving them correctly. There’s a lot there to examine and figure out what is causing it. People are just dismissive of how complex and hard programming is. And yeah, it’s their job, but it being work doesn’t change the difficulty of the task. The solution isn’t to let bugs harming player experience stay in the game because some others are using it to skip parts of the game. The solution is for the community to grow up.
