Be sure not to use the Scythe during the Boss encounter. Other have reported that killing enemies using the Wrench or explosive barrels can prevent the Challenge from completing.

I’m sure I’m running grief and I just ran it again and I didn’t use the wrench or the scythe to kill anything. I ran firefright, graviton lance, and corrective measure . I still do not have a completion on “empty grief”
