I'm seeing this everywhere.
Freedom of speech is slowly dying and not just in the normal sense but in a sense that people who actually promote and support Freedom of speech are quieting voices only because they don't like to see or hear it. It's wrong, just because you don't see eye to eye with someone don't quiet them down.
Let people say what they want to say.
It's the listeners/reads poor reception of it that quiets many.
What ever happened to if you don't like something that someone said you accept what they said and ignore it? And not have a 5 paragraph tweet or document about how we shouldn't be saying certain things publicly sounds hypocritical when you have someone defend the speech of one person or group but condemn some else's.
I know this is long but this is irritating me now because it's like no one can say what's on their mind anymore with getting attacked.
Be better, do better.

Most people don't understand what the First Amendment is. The First Amendment---Freedom of Speech---is a right that only applies to the GOVERNMENT and its designated agents. It restricts the abuse of the POLICE power of the state to silence viewpoints that they don't like, and PUNISH the people who express them. The First Amendment protects you from winding up like the Russian jounalist who held up a sign protesting the war in Ukraine...and now is in danger of being arrested (and disappeared) by the Russian government. Or the similar threats posed to journalists in Hong Kong, by the Beijing government. What the Freedom of Speech does NOT equal is FREEDOM FROM CONSEQUENCES for the irresponsible use of speech in the private sector. Your fellow citizens have NO obligation to tolerate whatever you choose to let fly from your mouth. If you say something that offends them or angers them....they are free to exact ANY sort of economic or social consequences they see fit. IOW, You only free to speak your mind TO THE DEGREE THAT YOU ARE WILLING TO LIVE WITH THE CONSEQUENCES OF DOING SO. The problem today is that we are increasingly becoming a hedonistic society where people feel that they should be free to say whatever they want, whereever they want and how ever they want.....without ANY consequences whatsoever. ...and life doesnt' work that way. It never HAS worked that way...and likely never will. Liberty is a balance of Freedom...and Responsibility. Responsibility without Freedom is Tyranny. Freedom without Responsibility is Anarchy and Chaos. So I really don't want to hear about people's "Freedom" without there also being an accounting of their Responsibilities to other people's legitimate rights. But very few people want to talk about that....becasue that's too much like work.....

1 返信So to enforce freedom of speech we should not let people conversate or debate. About 70% of people don't even have qualifications for serious progressive conversation and debate so it's naive to expect people to conform to etiquette. And even then over half the world is still stuck in 1990 or below, even the rural areas in first world countries, there's such a huge difference in education and parenting quality even inside two city areas spanning 100km. If 100km already causes an extreme discrepancy, what does cross-country or landmass distances? The internet is open for everyone, even to folks who don't even have freedom of speech where they originate so expecting a civil standard on your cultural basis is already a wrong starting point when the differences in roots and growth start from the next door city.

1 返信You have freedom of speech. Just don't go against the narrative, otherwise we'll come for your job and your family.

"When it comes to rights, I believe one of two things is true... either we have unlimited rights, or we have no rights at all. Personally, I believe in unlimited rights. For instance, I feel like I have the right to do anything I please. But if I do something you don't like.. I feel you have the right to kill me. So where are you gonna find a fairer -blam!- deal than that??" - George Carlin

1 返信TL/DR: I got banned from social media for bullying someone different than me and it's literally 1984, which is a book the people my parents voted for have banned from schools.

1 返信Twin Infernoにより編集済み: 6/5/2022 3:41:37 PMI think ppl truly misinterpret what “freedom of speech” means. When I hear what people think of the meaning its “oh I can say whatever I want and have zero accountability” take amber heard as an example. It isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free-card when you say something bad. It actually means that you should take accountability and that you have a say in a court of law. So, you have a freedom to have different opinions, and say them openly but that doesn’t mean you can lie, accuse, or insult someone with zero accountability. Not saying you’re doing that but that is how some interpret freedom of speech. Also the word is generally used strictly for government and political affairs, if someone blocks you or whatever, it’s not bc they don’t support freedom of speech, it means that have the freedom to block you bc ppl are annoying.

Having freedoms mean you take on the responsibility of the risks that come with them. Unfortunately that means that some folks abuse those freedoms and some refuse to take on the responsibility of the inherent risks. Both of those people progress us toward the same result, no more freedoms. Both need to grow up.

It's not a one sided problem. There's definitely been an increase in the push for censoring opinions that don't align with one's own. On the other hand, people are increasingly wielding "free speech" as an excuse to make no attempt at having civilized discussion and purposefully piss people off. It's a bully tactic; the same one as that kid who f**ks with you to goad you into retaliating so they can call the teacher and get you in trouble.
