The End and Beginning of Devrim Kay

It had been months. Or years. Devrim had lost count. Every day had begun to coalesce into one. One repetitive day. A blur of bounties being doled out. Of directing Guardians to Fallen glimmer extractions or Cabal excavations. It was endless. Monotonous. But Devrim knew it was important. So he did his duty. But as time went on, he began to feel forgotten. The EDZ was getting worse. Skirmishes between the Fallen and Cabal were frequently on his doorstep. The ruined church he called home trembled ceaselessly from surrounding combat. But still he held. Even when the Earl Grey ran out, he held. Then one day things changed. Rather fighting one another, the Fallen and Cabal launched an assault on the church. The Fallen swarmed from the North as Cabal drop-pods peppered the South. Devrim was trapped. His calls for reinforcements were scrambled. The two armies swarmed the church. From the steeple, Devrim used the stairs as a choke-point. Bodies clogged the stairs, but they kept coming. Fallen and Cabal, clawing over one another to get him. Their hatred for him greater than for each other. And that hatred grew with each body dropped by Devrim's steady hand. As the hours ticked by and the death-toll rose, their hatred turned to fury. And in their fury, the Cabal went insane with blood-lust. They wanted Devrim dead no matter the cost. Devrim could not just hear the Cabal Captain's roar, he felt it in his chest. It shook the fragile walls of the church. At first Devrim thought it was just a cry of frustration. But he slowly recognized the sound. It wasn't some empty, futile roar. It was a command. He knew the word. He'd heard it countless times. The church shook more violently now. A bright red light pierced through the roof above him. The Cabal Captain roared in his language again, laughing this time as he repeated their word for Injection Rig. Everything turned white as a Cabal injection rig kamikazed itself into the church. The explosion ejected shrapnel made of the dead. Among them was Devrim Kay. By the time the Vanguard arrived, they were shocked to discover Devrim, battered, but standing, where the church once stood. His new ghost greeted them and all Devrim was heard to say was "I held." He was a legend now. And the Vanguard needed legends. So Zavala appointed Devrim Kay leader of the Hunters, knowing it was time to fill the vacancy. All Devrim asked for in return was all the Earl Grey he could drink and all the Jammie Dodgers he could eat.
