It would only become a permanent playlist if trials population would be consistently high every weekend. As it turns out, trials is QUICKLY bleeding players, for a myriad of reasons. Trials just doesn’t have ANYTHING that casuals and pve players would consider it worth their trouble after being slaughtered in game again and again. Upgrade materials are NOT enough. No one really farms adepts, so flawless means nothing to a large amount of the population. They’ll settle for the non adept versions, and you know what? It’ll take probably just 2 weekends to get EVERY trials weapon roll they want, with how RIDICULOUSLY easy (yet frustrating) to get trials engrams. Not to mention that focusing cuts grind to ABYSMAL levels. People that have ALL their rolls will NEVER return to trials this season. Week 1 matchmaking WON’T bring them back. Don’t accept everything streamers say. Freelance on its own does NOT bring these people back into trials. Next season will have 1 or 2 new weapons. They’ll get their roll in less then 2 weeks, then they’re out of trials for the rest of the season again.
Case and point…
Trials simply CAN’T attract a wide enough audience of casual and pve mains long term. Bungie probably needs to accept this harsh truth at this point, before the playlist collapses again…

Speaking for myself i can confirm, i already have the weapons i wanted with the rolls i wanted the only thing that would keep me going would be to try going flawless, but as a solo player i find it impossible, even with some randos i found on LFG we would still come across a stack that they would play so fast, their shots so accurate that i swear i was playing against people with mouse and keyboard, so i will only try flawless when freelance is back but then again its a matter of luck in what skill level players are on your team because even in freelance i would find players on my team that made me question if the SBMM is actually working. Honestly even with freelance i dont find the rewards that intriguing for me to go back and try trials, im on that "been there done that" situation

-
Except population keeps going down every single weekend due to how bad trials matchmaking is. Waiting for it to get better will only make it worse. Yet the only increase in trials population we saw was during the freelance weekend.

Lower population = worse matchmaking. Bungie can’t keep solo, casual, and pve mains in the playlist long term, compounding the situation. Adepts aren’t enticing since the difficulty to farm them is so high. Most are smart enough not to try. Most others will cheat, use a recov, and other things to get them. I don’t think any reward would entice most players to play trials every weekend. Bungie should have realized this.
-
When so many people judge how well matchmaking works based on how much they win some of that is bound to happen. Freelance is an option but its not without its downsides. The biggest of which is that either its going to be screwing some people out of flawless or lower skilled players in both the team and the solo queue will just be losing.

Adepts would be the only thing that would work. But this easily destroys their value and the point of trials. No reward currently in the game will EVER be enticing enough to keep casual, pve mains, and solos long term in trials. Bungie can try all they like. No one wants to feel like a useless burden in the playlist. The playlist itself discourages most people from playing it for all purposes.

To be honest, I really don’t have an answer. I don’t know really how to fix a playlist like this. Rewards aren’t enough if people get continually slaughtered. The mode itself breeds toxicity and promotes cheating and recovery services. It simply can’t hold on to a stable playerbase. No one in going to stay in the playlist after farming their non adepts and armor. I don’t know what can be done to save it.

Comp has freelance split and has seemingly no issues with mm’ing after multiple seasons of having literally no reward. The problem is not splitting the player base it’s anti-consumer behavior and bad game design not retaining players. You make rewards only accessible to the top 5% of players to farm and then everyone else will go farm other things because it doesn’t respect their time which a game needs to do regardless of competition. Needs to add freelance, maybe some mods and overall just a new way of matchmaking while taking card wins into account. Either that or revitalize comp and give it is own -blam!- back and make that the solo only sbmm ranked playlist everyone is asking for and keep trials as it’s team only flawless chest -blam!-.

I think they should kill comp and just replace it with trials. Flawless can give you your title and ugly ship or whatever. Put adepts for wins at higher rank. So instead of a weekend thing with good loot and a useless playlist all the time, we atleast have a competitive playlist with unique loot.
