Racoons are the only answer...
And even the evidence is further supported by my moms coworker, who owns and specalizes in Racoons...

Raccoons doing what raccoons do, their species will likely outlast ours.
If you feel the need to do something to temper your grief, I suggest learning how to build & maintain a better enclosure. Killing one raccoon isn't going to stop another one from doing the same thing, but a better "cage" just might. You might want to consult with your neighbour that's wise in the ways of the raccoon about how to do that.
