This is an issue I've had with Destiny's storytelling from game 1, to be honest. The Lore Tabs are so well written. They're evocative, gripping, heartwrenching, even hilarious at times. So much so that, time and time again, I find myself wondering why these wonderful stories aren't the story our Guardian is playing through.
There's conflict within the city. Attempts at forging an alliance, or at least an understanding with the Fallen are working well in some cases, leading to violence in others. We uncover it in our missions. We read it in the tabs. We listen to it as your genuinely wonderful voice cast acts their heart out, either individually or through some pretty snappy dialogue. This is all wonderful storytelling, that makes the grind of this game's activities feel even more onerous. We, the player, are observers to the real meat of this game's story telling. We are not part of it. Our silent Guardian watches this all happen. Maybe Ghost gets to quip a little bit. But we just listen, without any way to weigh in or intervene. Then we run off to grind the same strikes/battlegrounds/activity of the season that we just did to get to this part in the quest. Or, if you're me, get killed so many times by the second shifting door in the Moon's Expunge mission that you actively start to question your own intelligence
I genuinely do love the universe that Bungie has created for this game, but it can be tough to reconcile the genuinely intriguing stories in the Lore, with the vapid, repetitive, drudgery of gameplay. I would love to walk through the City and actually see clashes between humanity and the Fallen. I'd get one hell of a kick out of being able to stand against Lakshimi, or with her, rather than just be passive. Hell, I'd love for there to be more of the City to explore in general. Even in more overtly story-driven campaigns, like the Red War, the damage and threat to the city are always kneecapped by the fact that I'm not all that attached to it. I'd never walked through any of the streets that got destroyed by the Cabal. I didn't have any fond memories of landmarks, buildings, or lanes. It was still fun, but it didn't have the high-stakes impact that I'm sure the writers wanted it to.
All we can really do in this game is alternatively kill and listen, and it often makes me feel like I don't have a lot of agency in this story. Sometimes that's alright, and I'm more than happy to enjoy some brainless entertainment. But there's just so much to enjoy in the reading right now that I wish there was more of it in the game. I want to feel more involved in how the narrative goes. Right now it feels like it's just something that's happening to my character, rather than something my character is making happen.

This post was too much to read…. Much like the lore. Holy shit. So much out there and so much time spent to write. But when I’m playing no way am I wasting time to log into a game to read!! So much more should be put into cutscenes. Or dialog during activities. Have that shit narrated by “my name is byf”. Or let’s get dinklebot back. The man ain’t exactly working these days.

1 返信Nah, our guardian plays a huge part in the lore. We slay gods routinely, disassemble hive ascendancies, dismantle fallen houses, decimate vex infrastructure. We don't need lore cards to describe our Vault of Glass runs, we were there, we did that stuff, it's lore canon. But Kabr's fated run on the Vault? We weren't there, so we need lore cards to explain what happened. It makes sense.

I think it’s better that everything our character does is in game, thus we do it. It’s pretty weird that we have one lore tab of our guardian drinking with the crow after beating the high celebrant, even though we didn’t do that in game

So while understand everyone’s point about lore being world building… That would be better if our gameplay loop was so one dimensional. I get that expansions are about us and we can’t play out everything but the go speak to so and so and go speak to other NPC is even more boring than playing mindless gather games for side quests

Our guardian has been pretty much the main focus for almost every DLC, this season is focused more on the political matters of the city, something that our guardian isn't exactly great at given our only experience is killing mass amounts of enemies. We've been the focus for every DLC, I think two seasons where we're just kind of listening in on the cities politics and assisting in them is fine.

crazycazza95により編集済み: 6/21/2021 12:15:10 PMHonestly the lore is the only part of the game i am interested in anymore, so i just watch lore videos or read the lore entries myself online. Bungie has been making alot of bad decisions in game and IRL over the last year or two which has ruined my experience with the company.

The player guardian is the main character of massive expansions, the focus of the biggest stories in the series. The seasonal stuff doesn’t revolve around your guardian because that not how the world works and you aren’t playing an actual leader. You aren’t playing a member of the vanguard. You aren’t playing a character who has been through great tragedy or spend decades of more studying an enemy. Arguably the only issue with the seasonal thing is that they don’t reference the older ones much and that seems to be because people might not buy all seasons but it sort of breaks the narrative slightly for the actual player when the previous season’s actions aren’t acknowledged.

Uh we were the focus on D1. Now D2 is playing out what happens after the events of D1. (Like Cause and effect.) Ever think that perhaps maybe we’d return to D1 in a later story to help Stranger alter the future again? Think about it

2 通の返信Kami-Samaにより編集済み: 6/21/2021 4:06:07 AMYou don't want a story where you're the main character. Trust me, it gets very boring and annoying real fast (look at World of Warcraft). Right now we're the cause of all these events in the lore, but the lore acknowledges the effects of our actions. I think this is a better form of story telling in the long run as a long time gamer that has experienced both sides of the coin.

2 通の返信Our story ain't half bad but most of it is made on the spot. Like when my teammates died on the outside in the atheon encounter so I had to kill supplicants, call out the oracles and open up the damn portal by myself.

It's funny I'm still invested where the game is going despite having 0 reason to actually play it. Not like I actually matter in the story anymore. This actually goes back to Forsaken if you think about it. No one here canonically killed Riven, unlike Uldren.
