The main reason why it was the hardest for you is most likely because you were using shoulder charge. Shoulder charge hit registration is absolutely terrible. You would've been much better off using bottom tree arc melee. When using a shotgun it's basically an instinct for me to melee after a shotgun shot in case the shot didn't kill my target. I think I was done with the melee part before I even got to that step of the quest.
