I'm betting that we don't.
1. The Crucible is not compatible with the identity (Action MMO) that Bungie has taken for the game as a whole.
2. Bungie has basically not invested in ANY aspect of the PVP side of the game (beyond Trials) in two years. Trials has viral marketing ability (Twitch and YouTube exposure) that ordinary Crucible does not.
3. The only things that Bungie has given regular PVP in the last 2 years is content ported over from D1.
4. Bungie is working on a brand new game. One that will probably be ready for launch in the next few years.
So what I think is going on, is that Destiny is being transitioned to being a PVE only game....and the new game that Bungie is working on ("Matter") will probably be the PVP game. One that will have the things that Crucible players have wanted, but that shared sandbox of Destiny never allowed.

I think its the simplest---and potentially most profitable---solution to the identity crisis this game has always fought with. ...and if I thought of it. I'm betting that a Bungie-executive-who-shall-not-be-named thought of it too....and probably pitched it as part of the Unification of Vision.

Actually yeah because Lightfall will be the end of the first Saga/Chapter for destiny as a whole. Which would seem like the perfect time to announce the split of PvP from this game and move those guys to Matter. We have had a taste of what happens when an element has evolved past the point of being nice to look at and for PvP, it has destroyed the notion of balance. ... And with the confirmed addition of more darkness subclass's and the potential rework of light.... There will simply be room for the evolution of PvP alongside everything PvE. Unless they tear it all down. Which would be a awful move.

I dont' think PVP has to be torn down. But it does need to be re-imagined. Because what FPS gamers see as PVP is not compatible with the identity of the rest of the game. ...and the evolution of the PVE side of the game is being hamstrung. Because its design is being limited to the narrow range of game mechanics that comp shooter gamers are willing to accept as legitimate, because of the unified sandbox. So the least played part of the game (Trials) has the most power to determine how the game is played. Fact is that the PVP that is associated with MMOs, and most RPGs are not contests of skill. They are contests of build-strength....and grew out of a wish of players to test the power of their build against those of others. IOW, there is no way for this game to reach its potential in PVE without either seperating the sandboxes......re-envisioning PvP as a contest of build strength.....or both.

Lots of other factors....and agendas often inform those kinds of decisions. Which is why decisions that look "simple" to those of us on the outside...become incredibly complicated to the point where they are unwilling to pursue them to those on the inside. For example, this week's TWAB. Kudos to the dev team on their transparency regarding being unwilling to move Linear Fusion rifles from the Heavy slot to the Special slot. As we have asked so many times. They acknowledge the reasonableness of the suggestion, but then basically admit the they either don't have----or are unwilling to committ---the manpower to solve the problem that way. Though I think they are overthinking what would be involved by thinking that they'd have to balance the hit-scanned snipers versus charge-timed LFs. The balance----imo---is already there. Snipers are faster...but they are more specialized for long-range combat than LF's With the more open scopes of LFs, you have a weapon that is much more easily adapted to combat over a wide range of distances. Thus giving someone a special weapon that is both useful at long range (unless you're counter-sniping) , but also just as useful in mid-range engagements. But again, I applaud their honesty even if I disagree with some of their ultimate take on it.
