HDR looked like shit for me when I was using their guide setting up the brightness(the no visible, slightly visible and clearly visible one). I just adjusted the settings back in and out of the setting until the game looked right.

Here’s what fixed it for me on the Series X. First, make sure all your video settings are correct on your monitor & other equipment. I add this only because I play on my home theater, and there are several monitor and receiver settings that must be correct for it to work at all. NM if you’re only on a gaming setup. Next, turn off HDR on the console and start Destiny. Go into the video settings in game and set brightness to the recommended 4. Quit all the way out. Make sure to select Quit from the Series X desktop. Re-enable HDR on the console and run through the HDR Calibration app. Restart Destiny, and go back to the video settings. Set the white level however you want, then be sure to set the black level exactly in the middle. You might have to play with the white level to tweak it. About 1/3 works for me. Be aware that some dark areas will be darker than you’re used to, and you can’t fix it without washing out the bright areas—this is how HDR looks. The cool thing is that you’ll be able to pull out your ghost as a light source in dark corners. The overuse of some atmospheric effects is really noticeable in HDR, but the game is even more gorgeous. Hope it works for you.

That’s odd, the series x update fixed my hdr issues. Have you gone into the Xbox dashboard and run the hdr calibration. Then go into destiny game setting and run the brightness settings ?
