[BNG] PC FPS Issues Megathread - UPDATE June 22

Hey, community. We're currently investigating FPS issues on PC.
UPDATES
June 22, 2021 Last night, AMD released Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.6.1 that fixes some Radeon Graphics products that were experiencing lower than expected performance in Destiny 2. AMD users may want to change their Settings > Preferred Software Version to Recommended + Optional for future updates.

June 3, 2021 In our TWaB blog post, we acknowledged that we made some major engine changes with the launch of Beyond Light - while working from home. Due to the pandemic, we haven't had access to our PC compatibility lab to do in-depth testing. We've been making improvements with each release even though they aren't called out in patch notes, and we're working with our partners to help address these issues and are optimistic about the future.

January 29, 2021 We have looked over the data post 3.0.2 launch: -- High-end users saw big improvements: we're about halfway back to pre-Beyond Light perf. -- Mid-range systems didn't see much improvement. -- Low-end and laptops didn't see much improvement. We're continuing to investigate and look for solutions toward better performance.

January 19, 2021 We released Update 3.0.2 that optimized Lighting on PC GPUs to help increase performance. -- Many folks have mentioned turning off the Shader Cache in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Does this help with performance?

December 14, 2020 We believe we found a few issues related to light probes that have led to GPU performance degradation. We're still investigating and hope to have a resolution in January.

Please use this thread to help us track down what is causing the issue by:
1. • I made another post about the low fps bug on reddit. Got good traction but still praying for a Bungie response https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/mx94f2/its_been_6_months_and_destiny_2_is_still_broken/

    • Hi Everyone, Please see the link to my dxdiag report. https://pastebin.com/Uqx8qJz8 I have tried everything that this thread has suggested and basically I have one of two options for my Sapphire Radeon RX 6700 XT, this card can run everything on max and easily give me 140fps but, Destiny is a different story. I either play with a frame rate that ranges from 27 - 45 or I can change the CVARS.xml file and I can have the 140FPS but all the shadows and lighting effects have an awful flicker, to the point of unplayablility. My game is installed on an SSD but I know this is not a hardware issue because I can play more powerhungry game in max settings in 4k. I have been watching and reading what the Destiny community has experienced and I couldn't believe that this has been going on for people since Beyond Light came out. Pre my RX6700 XT card I was using a 1050ti which had no problems running the game at all but it seems to be the new generation of GPU's that Bungie cannot seem to optimise for. Not going to lie if this can't be fixed by the time VOG comes back out I'll probably quit Destiny all together because It'll tilt me too much. If anyone has any suggestions or knows of a way not listed that I could try I'm all ears to get back on and playing Destiny again. Just want to be a guardian :'(

      • Has anyone tried 21.4.1, the latest recommended drivers for AMD adrenaline? They came out 4/20. I am still 20.4.2 and I am honestly afraid to update. I fixed the FPS issue by installing 20.4.2 but still had stuttering that went away after installing the game to M2 and playing only in Fullscreen mode. First delete your cvars.xml, look into problems with being in fullscreen/borless windwed (google it "destiny 2 fullscreen cvars.xml") and try to disable the FPS limiter/V sync as well, mine was at 144FPS - that held it back significantly. For refference I'll post my specs again: AMD Ryzen 2600X RX 5700 NITRO+ SE 16GB ram Game installed on 500GB Samsung 970 EVO M2

The 'Guardian Games' update absolutely tanked FPS. I have a 1660 Super that could run most content at 70-120FPS @ 1440p settings at a mix of highest-high settings. Since the Guardian Games update, I constantly dip below 60 and hardly go above 70 except in menus. Changing settings barely matters. Many other people both here and on Reddit are complaining about it. Revert whatever you did ASAP.

          • Since a friend recently gifted me the Beyond Light DLC I had been unable to afford myself, I fired D2 up again today and discovered a rather unusual problem: Cinematics (like the ones for the start of the Beyond Light campaign) cause my performance to brick hard... down to less than 5 fps, and hard audio stuttering along with it. What makes this even more strange is that the first 2 that play upon login and starting the Europa stuff have this problem, but the one right before starting to run around with my guardian talking to ghost runs just fine, but then the next one triggered repeats this problem. Gameplay itself seems to run smooth like butter down a baby's bottom. For me, this is unique to Cinimatics/Cutscenes, and seemingly not all of them, just most. If I do not skip the scene when it is an issue I will end up booted back to orbit via Error Code Rutabaga. I have never had performance issues like this in the past with destiny or any other game for that matter. I have tried about everything I can think of or find. I have: - rebooted the PC - verified the integrity of the game files in steam (no problems found) - changed settings down to near bare minimum (basically full minimum settings save for leaving my resolution at the same as my monitor. also have tried fullscreen and windowed modes) - deleted the cvars file - made sure that destiny has full permissions with antivirus and firewall (added it as a trusted application with no restrictions everywhere it was possible in Kaspersky) - ran only Steam and Destiny 2 (closed down everything else) - tried disabling shader cache in nvidia control panel - changed audio to 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality). - (nothing is overclocked so far as I know) - reset/optimized graphics settings back and forth in geforce experience (it optimizes on the high end so i tried to also set it to potato quality to see if it made a difference) - capped fps to 60 - updated to the newest driver for my GTX 980 Ti None of the above has had any impact at all. My Build:
- Intel Core i7-5820K LGA2011V3 3.3Ghz 6-core CPU - Asus STRIX GTX 980 TI GDDR5 6GB 384Bit PCI-E 3.0 DVI/HDMI/Display Port - Corsair H105 Liquid CPU Cooler 240MM - ASUS X99-A LGA2011-v3 DDR4 Motherboard - Corsair 1000W ATX 12V 80+ Gold Modular Zero RPM Fan Power Supply - Corsair Vengeance 32GB (488GB0 3000MHz DDR4 RAM - Corsair Graphite 780T ATX Full Tower Black - Kingston HyperX Fury 240GB SSD - Western Digital 4TB Caviar Black HDD - WD4003FZEX - Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 (64-bit Operating System)
dxdiag 64-bit dxdiag in case that makes a difference. At the moment, The only workaround I have is simply skipping 99% of cinematics/cutscenes... which is a bit of a bummer. Any extra help or insight would be appreciated

            • As people have noted multiple times, AMD drivers 20.4.2 and lower don't have near the performance issue. Seems like this issue was introduced in driver 20.5.1 of which they did make a change related to D2: "When performing a task switch, Destiny™2 may experience an application hang or black screen." Everyone please continue submitting tickets to AMD via their "AMD Bug Report Tool" after each update of your driver. We need this issue to look large to them (and it actually is) by giving them a large number of submissions. This will increase the likelihood this could be resolved in the next driver update.

            • i9 3.70Ghz 3090 RTX 128GB RAM 2TB SSD When running at 4k with HDR and settings all settings set to LOW is kicking out about 45 with dips to 30. On the latest Nvidia April drivers 466.11 What happened to the perf in this game? I used to get 144+ on my 2080? Witnessed this in strikes, Patrols in Cosmodrome, tangled shores, etc. No background apps are running. Gamebar is disabled.

            • Possible News? I tried out the new Adrenalin 21.4.1 drivers that were released this morning and they didn't seem to improve much for me: Tangled Shore is still 40-50fps on a 6900XT, though it did seem to be in the higher 50s than usual. I thought I'd give the old "force_enable_multi_threaded_render_submit"=1 trick a try, which in the past has resulted in an unplayable, ultra-flickery graphics, and lo and behold, Tangled Shore looked great. I was able to run around and play at +100fps, no flickering whatsoever. This isn't a perfect fix: my ship (High Gravitas - which sits weirdly low on screen btw?) still flickers a bit in orbit, and the tower is a mess (but maybe just due to the present lighting conditions?). Anyways, maybe these new drivers give Bungie something to work with to provide a more broad fix. I'm still holding out hope for those of us lucky enough to have current-gen GPUs that things will improve. Thanks Bungie!

I went from a custom built i7-6700k + GTX1080 getting a stable 90-140ish FPS with High/Medium settings on 1440p to a pathetic 35-80ish FPS on a brand new Alienware R12 i7-11700F + RTX3080 with the same exact settings. I've tried all of the suggestions, reloaded Windows from scratch, tried the latest driver, tried the driver it came with, tried a slightly older driver, scoured the Internet for any other possible suggestions, etc. The worst part of this is that I can set the resolution to 720p and it still runs like crap around the same FPS. I've been building computers for 30 years and working professional in IT for 20 so I don't think it's my technical or troubleshooting abilities but who knows. You would assume that you upgrade and purchase a brand new expensive computer, you might get at the very least get minimal improvements but NOT a downgrade in performance. What in the gods is going on Bungie??? Consider me a newer Guardian who absolutely loves this game and have poured in hundred of real money (silver) in short time in support of the game now another pissed off customer. edit: spelling

3060 ti paired with a Ryzen 3 300X and 16gb ram. Game runs well but then frames will suddenly tank for a spit-second to half of my fps target and then recover, seemingly randomly, but in PvP I am noticing it happening more when casting my super. This can cause me to lose engagements, it's gotten that bad. But it even happens when just browsing my inventory. I run this game @1440p between 90-120fps and never used to have any problems with performance. Then title updates came, along with bad nvidia drivers, and the game just ran worse and worse. I feel like I've tried absolutely everything. How many cores/threads does this game now need? I never used to have any issues whatsoever.

                  • What makes ZERO sense is that Bungie released a PS5 version, that PS5 version runs pretty damn well, even 120hz mode in crucible... THE PS5 IS AMD BASED!!!! Technically a Ryzen 9 5800x with a 6900xt (with some tweaks and clock/timing differences) At this point, the only way Bungie is going to do anything about this is if a big time social media influencer rants about it on their blog/video/steam/etc... Why not implement whatever tweaks you did on the PS5 version there Bungie???

I just think to my self, if people could actually purchase the new video cards imagine how big this issue would really be........ I just don't get how this issue is just flying under the radar for so long. I'm sure if a big streamer had the issue it would be fixed already. I'm just tired of waiting, and I'm pissed I wasted a DLC and 2 season passes so far and still no fix in sight.

I dont think they care anymore.. They got it running decently on Nvidia cards as well as consoles, They made their money, What's it to them if they shun the AMD community? They arent going to lose much if we go elsewhere. There is literally ZERO incentive for Bungie to fix it at this point. Other than to make the AMD community happy, but that doesnt earn them any money.. Bungie has pretty much become Activision.... The best they will even attempt anymore is to send us the same canned responses that we've been getting for the last 6+ months. However, if they expect to get a PS5 port running well, (4k @120hz) they will have no choice but to fix the AMD issues as the PS5 and the 6000 series share the same architecture.

                                • 6 Months and bungie literally is still not able to fix this issue. After the recent updates I'm not even able to get halfway stable 60fps with 20.4.2 anymore. You make it worse, not better. Revert the lighting back to pre-Beyond Light as a temporary fix/make it an option in the setting menu.
