The length of the lunge depends on how long you press and hold the button. And jump height, as well. If you hold the button while jumping off a really high tower, you're going to be lunging the entire way down. If you just tap the button, you'll immediately lunge into the melee attack. It takes some getting used to, and could probably use some more aim assist, but it's not glitched as far as I can tell.
