When making an argument what is more important to actually winning?
Emotions, Facts, or logic.
Which one is the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd important?
[spoiler]Personally I think Emotions are the most important to actually winning the argument (not actually being right) because humans are naturally emotional. Next would be the actual logic if your argument isn't poking at peoples emotions if it makes sense chances are you'll get someone on your side. Lastly I think the facts are actually the least important because you have to verify that they are true or not if you say it's a fact. Facts also don't appeal to peoples emotions as much, and if they do it often times can piss a person off.[/spoiler]

1 返信If ya ask me, seeking victory in arguments is usually both counterproductive and a great way to make your "opponent" resent you. Chances are your opponent knows something you don't and vice versa. There’s a beauty in that, in a way. Its quite foolish to deny that; denying that will only prevent the both of you from learning. And why in the world wouldn’t you want more knowledge? Sad truth is that a debate or argument like that, where both comes out smarter in the end and do not resent eachother more than when they started, is quite rare. If you want some proof of that, you can take a look at some of my previous, shall we say, experiences.

Depends, who are you trying to win over? The crowd or your opponent? The former I would say its a balance between emotions and facts. You need to make the crowd identify with you and your points while at the same time not being outlandish and having some basis in reality. The latter, well you've already lost if you're having an argument. I find change in those situations comes from good faith discussion

I suppose one could argue that a long known fact could be wrong due to the known logic at the time it was considered a fact... 🤔 Its like the chicken and egg question. What came first logic or fact? Edit: When in an argument I think emotion should be the last thing taken into account. At the end you should ask yourself “is this right?” What is factual or seems logical isn’t always right.

1 返信Depends on what the argument is about. In a lover's spat, emotion is critical. In other matters, logic and facts should win the day.

2 通の返信Let’s say that, hypothetically, you really did have unlimited breadsticks. Now, since they are unlimited, that means that you will never run out. However, on Earth there is a limited supply of the materials required to make breadsticks. Thus, if I were to attempt to eat as many breadsticks as possible, I would not be able to as eventually you would sell out, am I correct? Now that we have established that there are infinite breadsticks but finite supplies to make them, would it not be reasonable to conclude that you are either breaking the laws of physics, or are lying to me? And since one cannot break the laws of physics, logically you must be lying to me. Facts don’t care about your feelings liberals, you have committed the crime of false advertising and must give me free food or I will inform the authorities.

Pieにより編集済み: 10/17/2020 1:26:08 PMThinking about it, it's quite situational. What's most important... Knowing your opponent and how they'll respond to different combinations of those tactics. Knowing when to accept an L is also important. Has the potential to show one isn't too fargone, in order to leave the door open for a meaningful 2nd bout. Edit: this is kind of a dangerous philosophy. But in 2020 it seems to be the optimal play.

6 通の返信None of it really matters and no one ever wins. People these days are dug into their beliefs and refuse to budge. Facts don't matter because there are several different groups shouting "No THESE are the facts!" And everyone just picks the one they like while ignoring the others. Logic went out the window and emotion rules, that's why there are so many spoiled brats throwing a fit over something so minuscule as being asked to wear a mask in public. I'm just gonna start walking around without a shirt or bra on because muh rights.

2 通の返信Logic. If someone can make a more logical case than their opponent it wins by default. A logical argument will generally be grounded in facts. A logical argument will resonate emotionally with others as well. [spoiler]Sorry, all out of salt.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]and offending someone with facts makes them question what is right and wrong. And unless they are an idiot and completely ignorant of the Truth, they will realize what is right and wrong[/spoiler]

Rather, the best tactics are to 1.) understand the other person’s point of view, and 2.) being willing to change the confidence level to which you hold said belief. Because ultimately we should all know we are wrong about some things, and we should value and strive to know what’s true. If both conversation partners generally accept this premise, then I think actual progress can be made.

All 3. Facts and logic appeal to the mind. But emotion appeals to the heart. The most effective arguments don't just use one. Logos: appeal to reason Ethos: appeal to credibility/character Pathos: appeal to emotion [spoiler]Just saying that thousands of sea creatures die because of our waste every year is not enough. You need to describe it to evoke more emotion.[/spoiler]
