First mission is changing, cool, but how about canon?

Hello, so tutorial is changing, thats good news, because whenever I asked someone: Did you play Destiny 2? Most of the time this anwser came up: Yes, there was some wierd ball that guided me, I shot some purple guys and flew to some city with planet above it and than got lost. So better tutorial is great, BUT one thing is on my mind - when first mission will be different, is canon changing with it? Like which form of first mission is canon one? I guess it will stay the same, but I would like some clarificaton, just to be sure. Bungie or some lore fanboys - tell me what you think about it, so I have more thoughts to think about. Love your game, cheers.

Well, the actual first mission of Destiny 1 is the canon one. The First Light mission made no sense canonically because Dusk is there but the Cosmodrome is no longer destroyed from the aftermath of the SIVA Crisis and somehow a second Arcadia jumpship is exactly where the original was and had been there “for centuries.” So First Light just shouldn’t be considered canon. It was supposed to be canon for newer Guardians sort of, but its contents and the game’s narrative continuing to portray everyone as the Destiny 1 Guardian make it contradictory and impossible. I’m glad they’re changing the tutorial since it made things so confusing for new players. But Riksis looks good in purple so I’ll miss seeing that lol I’m curious to see what they do with the new Cosmodrome stuff in Beyond Light. It could be pretty interesting.

    • Hey there, I believe the canon lore will change slightly, placing New Light guardians as either the original guardian in a different "path" or a different guardian from the Destiny 1 guardian.

      • The way I always saw it is that in canon, the New Light mission in D2 is a prequel to the whole thing (D1 included) to act as a tutorial as well as to show how your guardian came to be. Obviously, D2 is a different game from D1, so in D2 you don't get to play through the D1 stuff after you're born as a guardian, but you're still the same guardian in lore from D1. I'm not sure if I'm getting my point across properly, but basically what I'm saying is that D2 New Light is the exact same New Light in D1. New Light (D1 and D2) ---> D1 (after New Light) ---> D2 (Red War) ---> D2 Expansions in order As you can see with that, the story/lore of the games up until now has not changed at all, but you just don't get to play some of it as a new D2 player. You play New Light to show the very beginning of the whole story and then are fast-forwarded to the present. As for the question about changing up canon, I assume that this new mission is just replacing New Light. It'd be neat if they also switched it out in D1 to clear up the confusion. I could be completely wrong about this part, but it's the only way I can see it making sense.

        • Bungie, King of Retcons and Sunsetting should care about the canon?

        • The game changes depending on if you are a new light player or not, for me for example my character woke up in the cosmodrome and went on to kill every destiny boss we know of so far, for my friend his character *canonically* has only killed Gaul and everyone afterwards
