Heres my thoughts: Matchmaking is fine as it is. Card based matchmaking works and is fair. The rewards are lacking. Where are the adept weapons (coming in fall I think but still)? The casual player needs to be able to get rewards too, so the one token per win is pretty stingy. I say up it to 3-5 per win and 2 for a loss, with the 3 5 and 7 token jackpots being increased a little too (to balance out the changes so there isnt so much token farming). Also the flawless glows should be permanent (and optional once unlocked) so more people are encouraged to go for it because then its a case of "if I can do it this week I wont have to do it again - which means every week people will keep trying) - a better system for this is the d1 year 3 ornament system. Bounties should be overhauled. There should be weekly bounties consisting of a bronze tier bounty which rewards the weekly 3 win reward, two silver tiers which reward token jackpots, and 2 gold tiers one of which rewarding a random piece of armour and one a random weapon. Then the repeatable/farrmable bounties should remain the same. The 3 5 and 7 rewards can remain static if it works better that way (I dont think so but its not that important) but the flawless reward should 100% be random. There needs to be more excitement as to what you could get and also this means that there are no weeks that people skip because the reward is bad.

Trials has an extremely small population, but still has to make matches. If they were actually matching based on card it would be 20+ minute waits for games depending on the time of day. I absolutely think that the rewards need to be overhauled for the mode as part of saving it, but it can’t be the only thing. I think creating a weekly ecosystem for players to earn their place in the bigger scheme is better than actual SBMM and a lot better than nothing. It doesn’t have to be exactly my system, but if Bungie doesn’t create a mode all players can improve in over time it’s just a way to waste time anyway.

  • With the suggestions I said (flawless ornaments, adept weapons, especially the bounty system), the population is likely to grow and as such the matchmaking will be working as intended. Right now it doesn't feel like its working because the population is pretty low, but with those changes it should work well. SBMM is the worst thing that could possibly be added to trials, as is locking out flawless players in their own playlist. Sometimes you get easy games, sometimes you get impossible games, but since there's not a rank system in trials and its a ladder style competition then there should not be any kind of skill based matchmaking. And SBMM makes it really laggy for top tier players and there is nothing worse than losing your flawless game because of a poor connection.

You can’t just add better rewards for the low population that exists and expect other players to show up for them. Even bounties aren’t worth wasting time on if the experience of playing isn’t fun, and players obviously don’t think it’s fun. As far as lag goes there is no CBMM in trials so it’s always going to be laggy no matter what. You can lose your flawless game because of a bad connection right now.

  • And locking flawless players to their own playlist is dumb aswell as it makes it a lot easier to go flawless which isnt something which is meant for most people, it deters people from going flawless (especially early in the weekend), ruins matchmaking on both sides with less players, and promotes more account recoveries.

Bottom rank of flawless is a bronze flawless. Who cares who gets bronze flawless of they can’t silver, who cares who gets silver flawless if they can’t get gold etc. You can make it part of the reward and still make it enjoyable for more people.
