New Player Expereince NEEDS to be FIXED

So because I have been playing since the release of Destiny 1 this is something I have not really noticed. But god when I noticed I was like WTF Bungie!. So as we know with the addition of New light new characters are put straight to 750 light having access to the majority of the content (Including Raids) Right off the bat. While this its self is not a problem. The main problem is if you are a brand new player then the game LITERALLY drops you into the deep end of the pool. Once finishing the intro mission you're dropped off to the tower and then BAM WTF do I do now. This is the problem. There is almost next to no guidance on what you should do first or any sort semi-linear path to follow. To a lot of us, this ain't an issue because we know what we doing we have our own stuff to do. But to a brand new player, this is a HUGE issue and will for sure make new players turn away from the game. There needs to be some sort of guidance, heck even a basic starter checklist would be something, Or even direct the players to the ship lady (Forgot her name) to pick up the legacy quest so they can experience the storyline and get a hang off the game and its story. This is something that needs to be looked into fast as this will prevent new players from joining in and most importantly Experience what the game has to offer. I would like to hear your guy's opinions on this as well as I feel this is really important for the health of the game.

    • At first I thought you had smoked some wierd stuff, but I didnt realize that new light skipped Red war completely. For me, it's hard to see that Destiny would need guidance, but I've been playing it from the very beginning. After some thought, I see your point. Red war should/must be mandatory for a completely new player to get familiar with mechanics and most importantly the feeling of being the one who matters in the war. Without story and a personal involvement, it's "just another shooter". What are we fighting for? Why am I required to do this and that?... That's the stuff that gives you a purpose to grind. If you know why you start without powers, it makes sense that you need to invest time to get them back. And for the love of god... Force them to learn how not to mess up heroic public events!!! ;)

      • Short answer, you’re supposed to go watch all the guide videos their beloveds put out. They don’t tell anyone else shit either — new or veteran. They pretty much just let the data miners and streamers do half their job for them. This is easily one of the laziest developers out there.

I'm so glad someone posted this. Before I go on I have to say I'm really enjoying Destiny 2. I picked up the game a week ago, never played Destiny 1 or 2 before. I have to say it was hugely confusing and in many ways still is. There are huge parts of the game, mechanics, systems etc I don't understand. I don't understand the chat system, I've not seen one player message since I joined and I've clicked just about every text chat option in settings, same with voice. I don't understand Heroic missions, how do I play without messing it up? Where do I get a decryption key for the eschalon ascendance? Why am I stuck at power 900? I could go on, I have so many questions. I watched a couple of New Light beginner guide vids but even they seem to assume a level of knowledge I don't have. I had to google to find the campaigns, had to google what the currencies were, had to google pretty much everything because very little is explained. The intro mission gives you some info but after that you are on your own. I played The Division which has similar elements to it but that game did lead you through until you were ready to tackle the end game content. There is so much content here, it's great but it would be nice to have some sort of early game guidance. Other than that I'm loving it and will probably buy Shadowkeep.

They hid the campaigns in the corner of the tower where no one goes. Very poor execution of new light. Makes sense why many of the new player left

That new first mission should’ve had you fly into the original first Red War mission. I’m really confused as to why they didn’t do that, it seems like such a massively missed opportunity. Like, come on, why wouldn’t you have First Light players fly straight from the Cosmodrome into the attack on the Tower? First Light seems like such a disjointed experience that really undermines the quality of the narrative. Without a good story, it’s just another flashy shooter.

          • Every new player should at the very least have to play Red War when starting the game, just like we did. It gives them an incredible amount of context and introduces so many things (unlocking abilities, obtaining subclasses, what a lost sector is, what a region chest is, what an adventure is, Zavala and Shaxx would give introductories to Strikes and Crucible respectively, obtaining your first Exotic from Sloane, the different enemy factions, etc etc). Allow players to join them at any point after they get their light back just like Y1. After finishing Red War they unlock access to the tower, as well as Mercury and Mars whose campaigns are in the director and unlock those planets for exploring just like they did for us. There was no reason for this to be changed. I can't for the life of me figure out why this was changed. Completing the campaigns and unlocking stuff as a result is a great teaching tool and super rewarding, and most importantly will get a new player interested in the world and what else it has to offer.

          • I agree was confused as hell trying to access Curse of Osiris when I jumped back in. Had to look it up. The amount of content on offer in New Light is great, but Bungie does nothing to introduce it to people. Guess they just figure experienced players and YouTubers will do all the work.

          • They shouldn't have given new players access to the Tower right off the bat. Bet they're all wondering what the Farm is for at this point.

            • Interesting. As a person who has been playing for a moment i did not know this and it seems like a blunder. When I started it was very linear, you opened the system map. and it highlighted the next area/world you needed to go to. with Mercury and Mars saying "Complete the Red War Campaign".

            • I created a different profile to try out new light. As a veteran destiny player, it was totally miserable. They throw you into strikes and gambit, which are some of the most boring parts of the game. Then if you want to infuse anything, you don’t have any materials. On top of that, any of the good weapons people are using are typically locked behind certain content. Took me two weeks just to be able to farm an austringer. Maybe my thoughts are not as credible given that I’ve logged more than 1000 hours on another profile. But I can definitely see where many new light players would say GTFO and peace from the game because of how it’s set up.

            • Had 2 buddies download new light, we all had weeks facetime in games like division 1 so they now had to play mmo/RPGs style games. Their reaction was, wtf do I do? They played a couple hours and havent been on since. Cant say I blame them, and I kinda feel bad for wasting their hard drive space lol.

            • They should put the story campaign's in destinations instead of having to talk with Holliday at the tower like picking up a bounty, and tracking quests will still not tell you where to go allot of the time.

The biggest problem is that they have basically hidden away The Red War, which was basically the bulk of the games welcoming comity, Curse of Osiris, which isn't that big of a deal other than a minor something to do, and Warmind, which was actually decent. Then the mass majority of the content that comes with them that isn't hidden in the same way is just casually sat there with nothing to get you're attention. I mean I get Bungie is basically wanting to basically start this game over now that they're rid of Activision but that being said to flat out just push all of that into the corner, kind of literally is not going to help them do it. It's actually doing them more harm than good.

            • Had 2 pals start. They had no clue what was going on. I literally walked them to Haliday to start the story's. They are sharp lads & not new to games by any stretch, but they jus has no clue what was happening, either story wise or activity wise. Confused lil noobs 😢

            • Introducing a friend to this game is so difficult now because there literally is no direction or starting point after the opening mission. My friend likes the game but ye wont ever play without me because the game simply looks confusing

            • yes i recruited a friend i play another game with. He's wildly confused as to what path to take. Everything is a quest pick up. So in theory he can just to all his quests and get along. But there will be no sense of progression or anything. Especially when you don't know much of the game.

            • I agree with this. I had three characters that I brought over with me from D1. The Titan was my main in D2. Second to the Hunter. And the Warlock pretty much got neglected. So after Shadowkeep launched, I thought I'd get on my Warlock and play through some of the early story that I never got around to doing on that character. The reason I wanted to do this, aside from just showing the third character some attention, was to show a friend of mine what things were all about. Imagine my surprise when I realized that good deal of the story was completely gone. I wanted to play through chronologically again. Instead of picking up quests from Amanda.

First 25 minutes of New Light video. Skip to about 13:40, pause it at 13:45 and take a moment to read the panel I fear some of you may have just skipped when you first hit the tower.
You've arrived at the tower--the main social hub for all Guardians. Here you will find vendors offering gear and pursuits such as quests and bounties. You'll meet other Guardians as well! We highly recommend you complete the "New Light" quest line, by following the Destiny icon, for an introduction to Destiny 2's various game modes, vendors, and systems. Visit bungie.net/guide if you need help.
If you follow the guidance it offers you, it will walk you through registering all the tutorials and such... which WILL eventually lead you to Amanda as a quest step. Otherwise, you could just explore the map to see just what these vendors are offering... they are all marked on the map. Furthermore, if you follow that help link they provided... It pretty much covers everything needed to get organized and start progressing through content. There is even a section on points of interest at the tower... It lists Amanda, and in her description it mentions access to the legacy campaigns:
Amanda Holliday is the Tower’s chief shipwright, so she’s naturally found in the Hangar on the east side. Amanda allows you to replay earlier batches of Destiny 2 content for a trip down memory lane (not to mention lots of chances to earn Glimmer, XP, gear, and items). Campaigns can be experienced once per character. After accepting campaign starter missions from Amanda, legacy campaign progress can be tracked using the Quest tab of the Director.
To say they are not offering new players guidance is disingenuous at best.

                  • I believe even a simple message for new players after they finish the starter mission that basically says go speak to {Insert Ship Lady Name Here} and like a quick introduction of what a raid / strike is and how to join one. which will give some what of a direction to where the new players should start or have a look at.

                    • All they have to do is pay attention to what is on their screens. Follow the big blue icons or pulsing markers in the map. It leads them to tutorials, has them talk to all the NPC's, get them logging and completing bounties... which in turn leads them into how to do strikes, crucible, gambit, etc.--and yes, even leads them to Amanda to unlock the legacy campaigns. They just need to pay attention to the dialogues and follow the markers.
