Armor 2.0 worsens the aesthetic issues it attempts to resolve

(TLDR at the end) As we know, armor 2.0 is being implemented in Shadowkeep in order to add a deeper layer of player control and rpg depth without sacrificing one's own cosmetic appearance. They have done this by making it so that as long as you have the armour perk unlocked, you can slot the perk into any armour (assuming it is the correct elemental affinity, which is another topic/issue altogether) so that any armour you like the look of can have the good perks you like. Sounds good right? You're not wrong! This is a good step in the right direction. The issue that armour 2.0 compounds lies within the randomization of stat rolls when you receive a piece of armour. With the current system, you'd often sacrifice aesthetic for a different piece of armour with enhanced perks or perks better suited towards a specific scenario even though you weren't particularly fond of the look. Armour 2.0 removes this issue, but replaces it with another (possibly worse one) in return. Yes, any piece of armour can have the perks you like now. But now they will all have varying base stats that affect gameplay greatly and would again steer you towards choosing the armour rolled with a greater gameplay advantage. Yes, your Titan 2.0 armour that you had to regrind EP again for the 1000th time looks awesome and is perk relevant again. But what will you do when it rolls with stats worse than the subpar roll offered by ana bray and stats significantly worse than that god-rolled clown helmet you picked off a dreg on the tangled shore? You would have to (of course you DON'T have to, but you would suffer because of it) choose the piece of armour with a better gameplay advantage but worse looks when you shouldn't have to. The only alternative would be to grind for that armour over and over again until you get a good roll. Oh, wait. Isn't that what we're doing with the current system in order to get good perks? If anything, this is worse because at least if you got bad perk rolls, you would know that you were at least guaranteed the same number of perks each time no matter what. It'd be moreso an issue of 'different from what you want for your needs' rather than 'outright worse in every scenario'. With armour 2.0 however, this IS the case. One piece of armour can straight up have more and greater stat values overall when compared to another armour piece. Its NOT as though every piece of armour has the same amount of points but distributed differently across values of resilience, strength etc which would make it so that a piece of armour is never outright worse than another. This does not make for greater player control over their aesthetic at all. What makes this issue EVEN WORSE, is how microtransactions are the sole form of cosmetic that can be applied atop any piece of armour to change its aesthetic without affecting it's inherent stats. Meaning that those who pay for their armour can instantly circumvent the issue of looking like a walking trashcan with stats of a god by paying for the eververse armor (that bungie always ensures is unique and rather good-looking) and applying it over that god rolled tangled shore armour (sorry and no offense to anyone that actually likes the aesthetic of this armour) while the rest would have to grind out bright engrams/bright dust. To address all these issues really, all Bungie would have to do is make it so that all armour can be applied cosmetically like eververse armour can. This should (probably) not be of any detriment to Bungie as a business beyond dedicating the effort to implementing the feature, but doing so would greatly benefit the player base overall. I don't even mind the grind for armour with better stats or different affinities that much either (in order to preserve some level of longevity for the game) but I WOULD really hate it if I'd have to choose between a nicely rolled piece of armour or good looks when I could possibly have both. Please consider this Bungie if you ever get to read it, because I definitely think this will become an issue in future. And yeah, also thanks for bearing through that long wall of text. Share your thoughts and stuff TLDR: Armour 2.0 merely replaces the grind for different perks with a possibly even worse grind for armour with better stats, which pretty much destroys the entire purpose of having greater control over your characters aesthetic when you still have to choose between a better rolled piece of armour vs a better looking one.

  • While you're right that the grind goes from what perks to what stats, i would prefer the grind for random roll stats over random roll perks. Stats can always be improved on armor through mod perks selected. And i could build my perks based on my playstyle. Say i need sniper reserves for a boss fight at Insurrection prime. I no longer to switch out helmets and class items, causing me to lose inventory space, i can just add sniper reserves to the items i already have on for the small glimmer cost. Looking cool and adapting my playstyle on the fly with less inventory used. This to me is a better win. Plus, if i happen to get a better stat roll armor in the look that i like that suites my gameplay, thats awesome too. So while ornaments for all gear would be a solution, 2.0 to me is a better option overall.

    • You can add an ornament to that horrible looking armor and make it look amazing. You mustve missed the transmog part.
