Forum Feedback

Hey all, Pinning this to the Destiny 2 forum, as I'm currently looking through some feedback on our forums and structure. I recently did a quick tweet asking players who may not visit the forums here on Bungie.net some questions, as I'd love to make this place more appealing for the broad community. Now, I'm looking for feedback from those who are on here more frequently, namely you! This isn't a question of what we can do better in terms of making in-game changes to Destiny 2. My goals here are to get some thoughts from you on the current state of our forums. If you could answer the following, it'd be much appreciated.
• What do you find most important to your browsing experience? • Do you find yourself frequently engaging with forums, or more often browsing associated media/group messaging apps for information/discussion? (Think Twitter, Discord, Youtube, etc) • What changes would you like to see that would make the Bungie.net forums a more welcoming place for community engagement?
• Oh yeah, and whatever Bungie do, stop lying to the playerbase. Just be honest if there was a screw up, instead of dissembling and attempting to hide it. People are much more likely to trust honest game devs who own up to their own mistakes, instead of one that hides behind corporatespeak and spin to evade accountability and responsibility.

  • Only people with a linked account are able to use the forum. The same with Find a Fireteam account has to be linked. Moderators are given more power to tackle toxic behavior. A better way to report all the paid for recovery/weapons carries etc. A system to show maybe a coloured star beside peoples names for those who are helpful. Which changes to Bronze Silver Gold or Platinum the more helpful posts or answers that a person gives. Not the upvote or down vote we currently have.

    • Get rid of moderators. Kinda pointless to have a forum but have free roaming mods redact everything. And quit removing the names of gamers who are cheating, exploiting, ect ect and calling it "shaming". Its not shaming, its allowing the community to knownthat someone out there isnt playing fair and we can mass report them and maybe bungie will do something about it, unlikely, but atleast we can be aware of who we're up against and can report them. Cheaters and exploiters SHOULD get shamed, otherwise youre just promoting their behavior.

      • First: Stop taking potshots at your own streamers, especially since Bungie offices are apparently a very large glass house. :P Second: Don't tolerate toxic behaviours on the forums, such as senseless trolling, mean-spirited comments, bullying, etc. That includes directed insults and threats between forum users, or indeed, those directed against specific Bungie employees. Third: Actually respond in every major thread that requires an official Bungie response, even if it's just to say "we've passed it along", but give a rough ETA as to _when_ that response might be forthcoming. And if a decision on a controversial topic is made in a way that upsets the playerbase, have the dev team give good reasons why they made that decision despite player criticisms: it's not enough to have Bungie decide things about the game over player objections with nothing more than a "because we said so". Players as a whole are not ignorant, and we often play the game far more than any one person at Bungie (with the possible exception of your game testers): if Bungie have a good reason as to why (for example) 'Enhancement Cores' have such a restrictive economy in the game, I'd love to know what that reason is. Who knows, maybe Bungie can convince me (but I doubt it).

      • • What do you find most important to your browsing experience? Hearing all sides from everyone possible. The compliments as well as the complaints. • Do you find yourself frequently engaging with forums, or more often browsing associated media/group messaging apps for information/discussion? (Think Twitter, Discord, Youtube, etc) The Destiny Forums are actually almost as fun as the game itself. Interacting with others - even to the point of arguing seems to be quite enjoyable. • What changes would you like to see that would make the Bungie.net forums a more welcoming place for community engagement? Remove the idiot Ninja mods that censor every little thing that can possibly be seen as offensive. Bland posts that follow the Code of Conduct must be balanced with exciting posts that piss Guardians off. Stop being so SJW and give everyone a platform to speak freely.

        • Id like to see better moderating on the forum. I’ve been here for a long time and my skin has grown thick. With New Light and Shadowkeep on the way Im hoping that we get some new Guardians to join the ranks and i dont want them to be met with ”You’re and idiot” replies as soon as they enter the forum. Disrespectful replies should be met with a warning over DM. If it continues a restriction. Might sound harsh but probably the only way to clean up this place and pave the way for something new and better.

          • More and better Filteroption ->if a Thread is marked with "bungie replied" or "moderator replied", i wanna have a feature that directly brings me to those posts. If you need a reference, Blizzard has a feature like this. Together with a list of all blizzard posts in chronological order Be more clear about how Threadaging works -> I saw alot of comments accusing you of manipulating threads. A way to better communicate this would help wonders Be more active on the forums -> I know it is hard to face the raging masses, especially for normal developers that arent community managers etc, but interaction and some insights in your work helps wonders to glue people to the game We're here to get infos and to discuss, please join us, so we dont have the feeling to talk into a void

          • 1) Other ppl’s points of view. 2) 97% b.net. 1% Twitter. 1% YouTube. 1% Discord 3) Take guided games, integrate it with the app’s lfg section. Make grouping up less stringent and toxic, create an environment that doesn’t allow users to post things like “must KWTD” or “Must have double digit clears” or “must have <insert loadout> here” etc... completely overhaul guided games and the lfg to be synergistic. I would like to schedule something in the app and see the results ingame in a guided games menu that shows my app scheduled events and who has signed up for them. Guided games needs a lot of love, lfg on the app needs some reworking, do both at the same time.

https://forums.warframe.com Very good hub for community discussion/interaction clean and straight forward, Bungies forum is a their version of reddit a giant dump of threads unorganized and an up/down vote system that promotes toxic behavour. Use the launch of new light to dump these forums move over to something new and start fresh.

          • -clear concise information in 1 place. Sometimes info is posted on bnet, but most of the time it’s scattered on Twitter, Reddit, etc. -I use YouTube to get news because those guys do the leg work of gathering info from articles, Twitter, Reddit, etc. and I don’t have the time -I would love to see bnet be the source for info. Add a twitter feed so that every time a Bungie employee tweets something it shows up there. Provide links to articles. If a Bungie employee answers a question or gives juicy details, provide a link. Create an @elsewhere section where you link to relevant things. Overall, the forums are fine. Trolls gonna troll no matter what, and you guys do a fine job of moderating. The only thing I would suggest is to be more active in collecting focused feedback. So often positive feedback gets drowned out by shitposts, but it’s more important for you to know what people like than it is to here little Johnny -blam!- about Lord of Wolves or Enhancement Cores for the hundredth time.
• What do you find most important to your browsing experience?
Honestly, I want to have fun. I do not want to listen to people whine and cry all over the forums. When I am looking for something in particular, I hate sorting through 200 posts about how Bungie screwed up this time.
• Do you find yourself frequently engaging with forums, or more often browsing associated media/group messaging apps for information/discussion? (Think Twitter, Discord, Youtube, etc)
I am on Offtopic, but I am ready to leave. I have talked to some of the Ninjas and a lot of them seem cool, but they also do not feel like members of the community. So we are left wondering why things happen and when we ask, we get what feels like a memorized response. Like when things change, it would have been cool of you all, the ninjas g the mods had come in and talked with us, explained what was going on and answered our questions so we could get a better understanding of what and why & maybe give you some direct feedback to make improvements to our community, sorta like this thing here, but live action, you know.
• What changes would you like to see that would make the Bungie.net forums a more welcoming place for community engagement?
I think we need to add to the reporting options. So that if someone posts in the wrong sub-forum, instead of the community having to downvote and inform, sometimes rudely, to change the #, we could just make a report that it was posted incorrectly. If we mute someone, it is not always because they are causing trouble, sometimes you just don't find their style meshes with yours and you want to see less of it, but not file a report. Finally, when someone is being an asshat constantly, and they are being reported, they should be catching bans a lot faster then folks that are not starting trouble. There is a huge difference and for that, we need Ninjas and mods in each sub-forum enough to get to know us. I got a warning and a comment deleted for making fun of myself. That type of heavy handedness will only bring backlash, not harmony. Another final thing, is avatars. We either could use more or allow us to use a custom one. Oh yeah, as a final, final note, pie and cake can not compare to the Allmighty Molasses Cookie!

            •
• What do you find most important to your browsing experience?
On bungie.net, a lore discussion. Which I have.
• Do you find yourself frequently engaging with forums, or more often browsing associated media/group messaging apps for information/discussion? (Think Twitter, Discord, Youtube, etc)
Youtube? Discussion? No. Youtube for seeing an existing strat and improving upon it yes and no I do not find myself anywhere else besides b.net most of the time. I would also like to remove the upvote/downvote thing here too. Reddit is not really a place of fairness or fun to be. I've often found far too many issues plaguing it to want it's format here. Website functionality too needs improvement. I'll make a post about it over there though.
• What changes would you like to see that would make the Bungie.net forums a more welcoming place for community engagement?
Destiny tracker for weekly content would be nice. Transferring gear app for laptops would be nice. There also needs to be a bigger discussion regarding ninjas and moderation in general I'll make that post sometime later and see where it goes though.

              • I find my homeland of OffTopic most important to my browsing experience. That a simple user interface, like this one. I live in OffTopic. Don’t have accounts for the other platforms. The only thing on the forums that actually bothers me is seeing those poor PC players who get lifetime bans for accidentally running harmless background programs and you folks at Bungie don’t investigate. I think that case by case evaluation of lifetime ban appeals should be a responsibility delegated to the Security Response team. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. • • What do you find most important to your browsing experience? On this site, info about the game, future events, bugs, glitches, cheese and general help/tips. • Do you find yourself frequently engaging with forums, or more often browsing associated media/group messaging apps for information/discussion? (Think Twitter, Discord, Youtube, etc) My clan use Discord for all comms. A lot more freedom there, than on here. I use Bungie.net for info when I can get past the nasty stuff. • What changes would you like to see that would make the Bungie.net forums a more welcoming place for community engagement? Same old request really. Daily comms from Bungie with info on the game and any other discussions. Less ass hats on here would be good, but hey its the internet so I have to accept them. Ninja's are just no good. Probably not them, but suspect they are ruled by an out dated iron fist set of rules. Give us more functions, Avatars for example. Let us stamp our own personality on our profiles etc. Bring back our medal collection that is viewable in our profile.

                • What do you find most important to your browsing experience? Enjoy b.net unlike many other game forums still adheres to minimum censorship. Love creations for the art. Occasionally interact with others for discussions/information/opinions. • Do you find yourself frequently engaging with forums, or more often browsing associated media/group messaging apps for information/discussion? (Think Twitter, Discord, Youtube, etc) No. Don't enjoy social media for discussions. Have to visit YT/gaming sites for information due to the nature of the game. • What changes would you like to see that would make the Bungie.net forums a more welcoming place for community engagement? Wish there was more interaction with the community from devs/employees and fun community contests and stuff as we had in the Halo days. The community has grown a lot but the Bungie culture is not reflected in the current forums. B.old was a lot more than just a gaming forum. Wish b.net was a central hub for the game rather than other platforms. Weird to hear Bungie employees refer to Reddit before their own forums for feedback. There may be a lot of salt on the forums but there are also many well thought-out posts from individuals who do not want to change the game but rather make it better. Bringing back the old title/rank system for users could be an incentive for good behavior and limit the crap posts :) Edit: Also, there was a ton of humor. Archive from 05.09.2008 5:49 PM PDT User post:
Posted by: Loaja343 I've been sitting here for two hours straight awaiting what Bungie claimed woulkd finally be a decent Weekly Update and it hasn't appeared yet. It's sure taking ages this week. What's the hold up, bungie?
Response posted by: Shishka | Absent Member Congratulations! You've been nominated for Shadenfreude. What is Schadenfreude, you ask? It's a game I made up just now. How do you play? Well, nominations are taken from people that make extremely annoying posts (such as "How do you get Recon," or "Where is the Weekly Update?"). Then I choose a participant. That participant must complete the task I give them. Should they fail, they get martyred, while I lawl and lawl. Hence the name: Shadenfreude. You're the first participant, so we'll make this simple: Pick a number between one and seven. You've got until 6pm PDT, or I blacklist you. Good luck!

                • Number 1 change I’d love to see is blocking off the forums to people who make accounts just to comment negatively on here even about stuff that is a positive topic. Not that it bothers me as most of those trolls get ruined in the reply section by people with facts. My suggestion would be to disallow forum use until doing the 690 Power Surge Quest that way people aren’t buying used copies of D2 getting to the Farm and then getting access to the forums.

                  • The most important thing for me is for real community concerns to be acknowledged, whether or not they will be addressed. A perfect example is the out of hand recoil on 110/140/150 hand cannons for controller and ads recoil for last word garnered dozens of threads and hundreds of comments, but not a single official comment from Bungie. This was very frustrating. What people want is not to have their views implemented but to be considered. A simple "we have looked into this and are considering a solution" "or after careful review the current system is best for these reasons" would remove a lot of hate and toxicity.

People don’t like to go to these forums for many reasons, but mainly because its become a salt wagon due to anybody that has a problem with anything feels the need that they have to post here.

                    • The forums are a great place to read on some opinions, tips and general discussion. But I do feel like the forums as they are now are quite, how do I put it? Aggressive? So many responses feel like they are directly attacking others and discussion on major topics always trails to whining, complaining and cursing. A more sophisticatedtone is much needed. So moderation maybe? Otherwise I frequent the Destiny2 main forums for overall view on all things Destiny.

I think Bungie should move away from the Reddit style discussion board with up/down voting etc as it does nothing but fuel toxic behavour, a more traditional forum is cleaner and easier to find things take a look a warframe forum for a good example of what Bungie should move over to if they plan to build a community that is more active on the forums. https://forums.warframe.com/
