Favorite Hub areas in games.
While us #Gaming folks make ourselves at home here in #Offtopic (thanks again for that), I figured this would be a good time to talk about other homes in games.
The Hub area of a game is often to closest thing us player call home between our adventures, right? Sure, they don’t always have clear lodgings for us, but they’re that safe place to come back to.
What’s your favorite, or a good runner up? What’s a hun you wish other companies would look at? What would you call home in a game universe?

2 通の返信I guess its might not count, but there's only one game (apart from density 2) that had a hub. That game was Red Steel 2, the reason I say it might not count is because the "hub" was broken into two or three "shops" located around the playable area.

1 返信The Darkest Estate, in Darkest Dungeon. In a lot of ways, I prefer the time I spend in this little village more than the expeditions. It always feel great to come back from an expedition with upwards of 5000 gold to buy new armour and weapons for my soldiers, or upgrade their abilities, or force them to become alcoholics... I mean relieve their stress in a bar. Darkest Dungeon does a lot of things right, and the hub area is definitely one, even if I wouldn't exactly call it a home.

2 通の返信BusyBadgerにより編集済み: 1/30/2019 10:08:21 PMAs I love clocks & watches and the Thief game series it should be a surprise to no one that Garrett's clock tower hideaway in the most recent game gets top mention from me. A few others hear mentioning though... Both the SR-1 & SR-2 Normandy frigates from the Mass Effect series are great, though she really comes into her own as the SR-2 Normandy in Mass Effect 2. The Hound Pits pub in Dishonored is great. It has secrets to be discovered, NPC interaction with outstanding voice acting and lore items galore. I can't recommend the game enough. The Base of Operations in The Division is another solid hub. It shows gradual interior changes as the base is upgraded, additional NPCs (no interaction) show up as smaller missions are completed and additional dialogue that reflects story missions completed by the player. *Edit : Honourable mention goes to Adam Jensen's apartment in Deus Ex: Human Revolution as, based on the disassembled watch on a table in the living room, he's apparently an amateur watch maker.

1 返信Not really a hub, but it's where I spend a lot of my time between quests and instances. That would be the housing district of Uldah, The Goblet. A lot of members of my Free Company have their personal houses there (including me), so we'll usually meet up there. There's not a lot of traffic there,so I don't get to meet a lot of new players there, but it's my home in FFXIV.

3 通の返信Maybe not my personal favourite one (maybe it is idk myself) but The Division’s base of operations definitely is a good one. It has to be built up before you get to experience it fully but when you do it comes with shops, cabinets that give you free materials, consumables, or gear every few hours, and even a shooting range to test out that shiny new gun at different ranges. But one thing that makes it that little bit better is that amidst all the chaos in New York, people are seen setting up Christmas trees and having a good time together. I can’t think of any other hub area that offers players as much as the base of operations does

I don’t think it’s a “hub” in the traditional sense, but I really like how The World Ends With You handled Shibuya. See, in TWEWY, Neku & Shiki are tasked with completing seven trials set by the mysterious Reapers to win the Game, with the punishment being the ominous sentence “fail and face erasure”. Well, these trials all take place within the city of Shibuya, but each one only lets you into a particular place of the city. For example; During Day 1, you start in the Central Crossing. Trying to go right bumps you into an invisible wall. Trying to go up, and there’s some creepy red hoodie dude in the way, so you have to go left, to the Statue of Hachinko, where you meet Shiki, which unlocks the upwards route from before. Day 2 lets you go from the Underpass, left to a small area I can’t remember the name of, and finally up, to the Statue of Hachinko. In the later parts of the game, when the city opens up, you end up having a mental map of the place, that the game slowly introduced you to in small chunks. Just from Day 2, you learned the route from the Central Crossing to the Station Underpass. It’s a great system.

Say what you want about The Evil Within, but Tatiana's calming voice and subtle sarcasm can make even that hub feel safe. Otherwise Ironforge. Walking up a mountain to enter an enornous, bustling city within it was a joy to be in. The music, the colours, the entrance atmosphere... Everything about it was magnificent.
