So, several days ago, I shat all over this "bug." Having played some more, I now think it's ultimately for the best to leave SBMM out of quickplay, but with caveats. The prioritization in matchmaking should be as follows:
1. Connection
2. Solos need to match solos. No more dumping me into a losing game with 5 randoms against a super-sweaty 5-stack.
3. New player protection (fewer than 100 matches)
4. Very low K/D protection (around, say, sub-0.5 K/D); these players would be kept with the "new player protection" group."
Finally, Quickplay becoming ultra-sweaty has not happened in a vacuum; it has a lot to do with many players not liking Trials/Comp as they are now. I believe that if Trials/Comp get "fixed" — i.e., if they get radar back and get more engaging gametypes, like the new Lockdown — the sweaties will stop piling into quickplay, which is what's happening now.
We all need to remember that no configuration will please all players. Thus, to some or another degree, all of us will have to compromise. Just my thoughts.

I really like the idea of a low skill/beginner grouping for the crucible, but by KD is not the way to do it as your KD is so dependent on your competition. I am currently a 0.90 ish KD overall but about 0.3 in trials, and 1.3 maybe in Iron Banner (which I tend to get the best results for some reason). If a sub .50 KD playlist existed, by definition, they couldn't all stay that way - half (approximately) would be above 1.0 immediately. So, this idea would need some kind of other skill rating that took into account the skill rating of those you play against. That skill rating should go up more if I beat a tournament player 1v1 compared to guy who is afk just trying to complete a milestone.

I see what you mean, and you have a point. K/D is not necessarily equal to skill. It could be a more complex metric they use, like KD/A plus win percentage plus maybe ... percentage of crits landed? I dunno, I'm just spitballing here. But you see where I'm going!

Yes! Bungie should put some thought into this. There should be a path for unskilled players to enjoy PvP (because, c'mon - most players that say they hate pvp would suddenly enjoy it if they felt proficient) and to move to higher skill playlists as they improve. There is also definitely room for a purely connection based mode (or event, whatever) that puts everyone together without skill curation.

Oh, I agree. And the "radar is a crutch" claim is completely bogus. What is a crutch? A thing that a few people need to walk — which means very few people have it. Radar, by contrast, is available to everyone. Thus, using radar isn't a crutch any more than using two legs to walk is a crutch, since everybody has radar, and (very nearly) everybody is born with two legs. Radar is just information, available to everyone in the match; smart players use it, dumb players don't use it (or don't know how to use it) and then complain that it's a crutch. End of story.
