For terms of PvP, Hunters are ridiculously better than the other two classes. Bungie wants Destiny 2 to become competitive, but ruins every competitive aspect by outright making Hunters the best. Here is my reasoning divided in 3 simple concepts.
For one, verticality, the ability to have the highest vertical movement in any video game is a significant advantage against all players, especially when no radar is active. Titans have high lift and catapult, but the verticality isn’t instantaneous like the Hunter class. Warlock have verticality, but they cannot come down to earth without notably being a sitting duck in the air. Why is verticality so good? It’s obvious, the ability to reach high and attack from above is an amazing advantage in gunfights and is why most [decent] Hunters win any fight.
Secondly, the base game advantages Hunters have in all 6 different trees caters unimaginably to the Crucible. Nightstalkers have invisibility on dodge and invisibility through smoke grenades, this itself is fine, I’m okay with having decent enough vision to see an invisible dude. Gunslingers have chain of woe, which is extremely under appreciated, the reload speed is beautiful and it helps all allies nearby and practice makes perfect, an ability to charge super faster + a free throwing knife on precision kill, not too shabby to be honest. The outright contender for Hunters is the Arcstrider, with combination blow, combat flow, and deadly reach [three different advantages compared to the other subclasses one to two]. Combination blow regenerates health on melee kill, that’s really really good for PvP and would be fine just like that, but they also have combat flow which allows all melee kills to instantly get the dodge ability back and it doesn’t end there! After dodging, deadly reach kicks in and gives Hunters additional lunge to their melee. Which would all be completely fine if gambler’s dodge didn’t give full melee on dodge. The simple ability to be at full health after a gunfight completely ready for another and another is absurd. On the other hand, Arcstrider has disorienting blow, focused breathing, combat meditation, and lightning reflexes [FOUR WHOLE ADVANTAGES]. Disorienting blow is completely fine and I actually love it, but focused breathing and combat meditation are a little much, getting dodge by simple running is a lot too much, imagine if Warlocks could get their rift twice as fast by running. Lastly, lightning fast reflexes does two things [to my knowledge]. It hides a Hunter’s hitbox and aim assistance and gives damage reduction, both are critical in Destiny.
So what do the Titans and Warlocks have?
Titans have Sentinel which is as broken Cayde-6 right now with health regeneration in the Code of the Protector. Strikers have Code of the Juggernaut. A Titan’s little T-Rex arms aren’t the best for playing without exotics.
Warlocks have rifts which take longer than a whole minute to recharge and devour, which doesn’t exactly give you full health, just a decent chunk.
Thirdly, the exotic game, is Wormhusk a little too good right now? Yes, it’s ability to simply say “heck off” to any losing gunfight and allow one to win any fight is unlike anything we’ve EVER seen in the Destiny franchise. Plus, it’s on a short cooldown and is make instantaneous by a variety of a Hunter’s perks.
“B-but Titans have Crest and they get cover!!”
~no health regeneration and they get like 20 health / why on the EDZ would you stay in one place in a PvP game centered around mobility?~
“Warlocks have Phoenix Dive and rifts!!”
~one, you need to jump out of cover and why Phoenix Dive mid gunfight / rifts take forever to come off cooldown~
A simple way to fix this is to either give a small nerf to Wormhusk, maybe set amount of health like Crest, maybe make regeneration starts slightly after dodge so you can still come into new gunfights healthy, but risk death if you dodge mid gunfight ~or~ increase all health regeneration abilities to be on par with Wormhusk.
Thank you for reading, if you’re a Hunter main, I’d love to hear why you personally think Wormhusk is completely fine and not in any way a little over tuned, comment below.
TL:DR
Hunters are overall better for PvP than the other two classes and it should be an equal playing field.
Gunslinger is trash in crucible. Knife is worthless and super is too short.
Nightstalker crutches on invis because you have to sacrifice yourself to use super to TRADE. Exception for when you play trash opponents that walk into the huge GLOWING purple trap.
Arcstrider is by and large the subclass used in crucible. I will give you that coupled with Wormhusk it is a strong build for crucible.
So Hunters have ONE subclass that dominates in crucible.
Titans have better grenades and wall and all subclasses are viable. If you are bad with Senitnel aggressively then use bubble.
Warlocks have ridiculous recovery and all three subclasses are superb in crucible.
Get real son.
