Matchmaking Update - 2/17/2016

Guardians, The refinement of your competitive ecosystem continues. As you battle each other in the Crucible and discuss those experiences on the forum, we're taking stock of your reactions and sharing them with the team. Today, that same team is sharing back to you with some news on what's changing. Effective Immediately: New Matchmaking settings are live in Control. We've taken additional steps to increase the emphasis on connection quality. Skill ratings will be less a factor in finding you a match. Lag will be even further diminished. Enjoying a game with your friends who are more/less skilled than you are will be easier, but your opponents will be more random, so you will stand a better chance of getting your ass kicked - or vice versa. There is still some form of protection to insulate the casual players among us from the most hardcore, but those considerations will have much less impact on the technical quality of the matchup. We have also extended Damage Referee (click and scroll down to "Out of Bounds" for context) to govern the impact that poor connections have on matches in Clash, Rumble, and Freelance 3v3. It is still live in Control, where it was originally deployed. As always, your visceral real-time reactions to these changes in a live-fire exercise are more important than the math. Sound off and let us know how it feels. For now, your test-bed for the new settings is exclusive to Control. Get in there and control the zones. Let us know if you'd like to see these changes deployed far and wide. It's an ongoing process, and you're the most important part of it. Thank you! UPDATE (02/18/2016): Matchmaking tuning has been revised to prioritize finding people who are close to your locality in the interest of further reducing lag.

(I know, I know.. I'm tardy to the party. But just wanted to give a more "up-to-date" comment on this, since it's a problem still being worked on) Last Iron Banner event, I played every single day all day and had no problem with lag. I usually don't play the crucible, but I'd consider myself a casual pvper. This Iron Banner event..... was horrible. During the day (EST) from morning till about 3-4 my connection would be perfect, other players' connections would be perfect, we were equally matched teams as far skill and connection. During the day I was SLAYING through matches with pretty decent k/d ratios. As soon as 3 or 4 pm hit, lag hit me and other players like your dad's fart would hit your face. Thankfully I was never matched against or in a team with players who were taking advantage of lag like other people were explaining before me. But I have to say that all the other problems people are having were going on throughout the iron banner. I play Destiny for hours and hours. I especially enjoy the iron banner and other events. This IB event though, I only played 3 or 4 days of last week from the day it started because it was too frustrating after having amazing connection and such a great time with these fireteams during the day and then tons of laggers come in, laggers who take advantage, etc. But my main problems are as followed: - hand cannons (and other weapons that are shitty) being fired over 40ft.. 50ft away killing you in one hit -being killed when you're behind walls and rocks. This was probably one of my biggest frustrations. I know this is a true problem and not me thinking I'm behind it when I'm not, because i tested it when I equipped my sword for a 3 person view. I was being killed through walls and rocks -spawning into a match with "good" connection that the bar indicates, then 2 minutes in it's showing that me and/or other players have very poor connection. Though I will say that there are times where my lag doesn't give me an advantage OR disadvantage, but more times than not it's a problem. -screen blacking out almost every match or every other match, come back into the game dead (was out so long that I don't even see on the corner of the screen who killed me and how), can't shoot or move, other players around me freeze and 3 sec later I'm alone, etc. -shooting tf out of players, you know damn well you killed them dead, and no damage shows.. they kill you in one hit. and either they don't die or they die at least 30 sec after you die -guns that normally would NEVER kill you in 1-2 hits kill you (I mentioned this but it's so upsetting). I'm not one of the super hard-hardcore gamers who get down to a science what the right weapons to use in which pvp match in the crucible, but I know enough about this game and the weapons to know that shouldn't be happening, damnit. I agree with the people saying it should be skill-based and the people who say it should be connection-based. For someone who loves having fun but at the same time loves seeing a high k/d ratio, I don't think there's really a middle ground for this. It sucks so hard being over 305 and every person on your match-made fireteam is below 300, while the other fire team is 305 and above. They're completely wrecking your teammates while you're pretty much a lone wolf. I don't know how many times I've seen "strength of the pack" or other one-man army badges and stuff come up on my screen. Make the lower lvls get more experienced by demolishing them, sure, that's how I learned when I was young to get better. But it's not fun playing with high lvl players who don't play fair. And I'm not talking about players who only play the crucible while still having fun. I mean the ones who just prey on any "weak" player whether it be light lvl or connection. But at the same time, connection is beyond a huge issue for almost everyone. Before these connection/matchmaking "changes" were made, there was no problem with lagging. Ever. At least from what I remember. It was as smooth as a baby's bottom. And now we have either: 1) a couple laggers on one fireteam against perfect connection players singling out and targeting the laggers to make it easier for them to win, or 2) several laggers taking advantage of their lag (being jerks) and teasing/-blam!-ing with the other players, happening almost every single match (after 3pm EST for me). Now, Crimson Doubles... That was the -blam!-ing best. Rarely had lag, rarely played with anyone who was lagging, evenly matched with both connection and skill, super -blam!-ing fun to play. It was really a joy. And after I got only a couple of the rewards in just a couple days, I wasn't even playing for them anymore. It was just fun. I don't really want this comment to be up for debate with other players cause I don't care that much to do that. I just wanted to express the very serious concerns about our gameplay. You know it's bad when og players and players who play for LONG hours get off for days at a time. After this long of people complaining, for most people this isn't a "it goes both ways" kind of deal. For a lot of us, only one way is the problem, and that's coming from Bungie's end. I love this game but the matchmaking system should've been left alone in my player opinion. This is the worst lag I've ever had on Destiny. Ever. And I'm super disappointed. Edit: went through my stats for clash and forgot to mention that the many times when my screen blacks out, before it does so I know I've killed at least 7 people and when I return I have 0 kills. And this will happen with at most 5 min left of the match.
